Charlie Chan and the Rise of the Modern Detective (2007)

*** (out of 4)

Detective story experts are interviewed about the importance of Charlie Chan in regards to the genre and how the stories would eventually evolve in the next decade in the film noir titles that would make several people famous. This featurette clocks in at 14 minutes and for the most part it does a very good job at taking a look at the genre and giving a casual viewer a good idea as to where the detective role came into play in popular culture. The documentary manages to discuss how these stories began to get popular and the various changes that were done throughout time. There's even talk of how Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens originally helped and why Murders in the Rue Morgue was so important for the genre.
