Decent start but paced faster than the master bolt
Moronimotta20 December 2023
It was no surprise that the series would be done with more respect than the previous productions. The trailers, announcements and news confirmed even more how much passion was put into this project.

The first episode was a decent start, full of energy, life, with great acting, amazing cinematography and soundtrack.

The actors are mostly great. Walker Scobell nails Percy Jackson's charm. The chemistry between Percy, Grover, and Sally was the highlight of the episode are surely other interactions will be up to the same level.

The episode structure gives the feeling of tearing the pages out of the book and bringing them to the screen, from the pace to the episode titles.

Speaking of pacing, you will hardly be bored, the feeling of a new adventure and magic is present at all times, eliminating "boring and long explanation" moments. Despite making the episode dynamic, it affects the development of the characters and the time for ideas introduced to mature, becoming very fast, resulting in apathy and confusion (even having read the books, I try to watch the series as someone who is being introduced to the story for the first time).

I know that people been saying this since the first book came out but, the first episode gave me the same vibe as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, with similar scenes such as the Minotaur's fight and the Troll's fight in the bathroom or the call to adventure in a distant cabin in the middle of the storm. It's not a negative point, just an observation.

Perhaps something that many will not agree with, but the film managed to better balance the beginning of the story with the new information that needed to be introduced, making the pace more concentrated and linear.

Overall, decent start for a series that will be a great deal in a few years.

Echoes the book almost completely
poseyfan21 December 2023
Wow, i must say I didn't expect this. I really enjoyed the first episode. The story beats are largely the same as they are in the book, and it's better for it. It is extremely fast paced, so take that how you will.

The magic that I felt while reading the books has returned in a sort of way. Of course this is only the first episode, but I am still satisfied.

Percy's actor fits well, Grover fits well, and the story gets off to a familiar start. I hope the rest of the season follows suit and doesn't deviate from the books like the movies did. It really can't get much worse than those adaptations so I'm glad this doesn't seem to be going that way.

Can't wait to see more!

Pretty good! But not GREAT.
teddabread224 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know a lot about the Percy Jackson books at least (what this series wants to follow, this series wants to be similar to the books), but i read about 50 pages of the first book. I got into it, but the story just felt quite complex and weird with a lot of words that i haven't heard before so going into this series was like watching a series for the first time blind.

This first episode was pretty good, straight forward and straight to the point which was good! The actors are pretty good and the monsters/creatures (whatever you wanna say) look pretty good but they still have A BIT obvious CGI. Otherwise they made for example the minotaur in this first episode look quite good.

The episode had some good and straight forward but not TOO intense action scenes and they were fun to watch and made you pay attention to what was happening so that you can also know a little bit about the creatures.

I think that the idea of the books and just the whole Percy Jackson STORY is pretty creative and unique! It's well done, but it's not GREAT!

A few negatives i have about this episode is that the dialogue and lines (maybe some comedy too) doesn't fit so well with the story.

I think that the story of Percy seeing these creatures and that he is the chosen one. He is the half-blood is pretty interesting.

This episode felt kind of rushed and felt like it had a little bit of lack of potential but it was still a fun, good and an enjoyable episode for what this series wants to be!

It's a creative and fun series to watch by yourself OR with your family, even though theres just two episodes so far (when i'm writing this review) i still feel like this series (so far) has some good family fun, same with the first episode which was done quite well.

I'm looking forward to this series and it feels like a series that the later seasons will either be a success or a fail. I am quite excited to see what they have to offer with the story of this series!

Overall good episode and good start to a show!

Potential Wasted
tamyahussain20 December 2023
The cgi is brilliant but there's only so long you can go ignoring the terrible acting. When I saw who the lead actor was for the new adaption, I was slightly excited since his acting skills were good from previous movies such as the Adam Project. But I have to say, the acting seems slow and sub par. The storyline a little haste as if they were rushing viewers to get to the main part which was the camp. Overall, not very excited to continue but will due to liking the previous Percy Jackson movie and curious to see how the cgi for other creatures looks like.

I did like the relationship between the mum and Percy but I think they could have delved more into the high school part of Percy Jackson or at least not added too much and delved into slowly.

Giving it a shot - fan of the books
arconner20 December 2023
So is it different than the book? Absolutely. Scenes changed, dialogue of course changed, etc. Do I still love it? Absolutely. As much as the book - in a way, yes.

So it's different. My biggest irk is Disney definitely was cheap with the visual effects and graphics so far but that could change if we get the momentum we need to see a proper series finale in 5 years!

But man, am I impressed! Rick, Walker, and the whole team and cast did a wonderful job at bringing the world of Percy Jackson to television.

I feel connected with the characters already, maybe even more than I did in the book. It was very fast paced, and I wish they made the episode a little longer to flesh out more of the scene with Mrs. Dodds. But other than that?

Amazing start to what I hope leads to a universe of TV shows for Rick's amazing worlds.

💖 It's finally here!!!
sleepyari1 January 2024
I've been anticipating this show ever since it was announced and I've been patient through all the recasting and delays. I'm really satisfied with how it turned out. Because it's a tv show and not a movie, they had more time to introduce the characters and the universe. I really loved what they did with Sally (the mom) because she has so much more agency and strength compared to how she was written in the books and portrayed in the movie. I love what they did with Grover too. This CGI is really clear and beautiful and the action scenes weren't too overwhelming. Looking forward to see more! :)!

A very nice introduction
fitrosv20 December 2023
Very nice introduction to the story with actors that from the beginning seem to pass their roles. The pace at the beginning was a bit slow but it is normal for the first episode that tries to introduce all the characters. Very well done. Nice cgi effects. I haven't read the books and I don't really remember the movie's story but this episode felt like the perfect starting point to a successful series franchise.

Maybe I am not the perfect guy to tell if the sticked to the story and the source material but everything felt normal and well done. I am very excited and can not wait watching the new episodes!

I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teache
Prismark1012 January 2024
I did not think much of the adaptation of Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief from 2010. The film was directed by Chris Columbus but the magic of the Harry Potter films had deserted him.

Now Disney with the help of the writer of the books Rick Riordan have adapted for television.

The long form television series can be more faithful to the books instead of the rushed movie.

The first episode has 12 year old Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) having a difficult time at school. He is always daydreaming and he and friend Grover are always being told off by the teachers or getting bullied.

A trip to the museum unlocks something in Percy, something teacher Mr Brunner who is in wheelchair notices.

An incident with a bully leads Percy to be expelled from school. After which his mother tells Percy a strange fantastic story about his origins.

The first episode was the set up. I think it tried to find the essence of Percy's life until then and also mirror his confusion. To me it was very much a work in progress that is using the expanse of television to allow the characters to breathe.

Strong Start to a Long Awaited Series
oklaloghead22 December 2023
As a fan of Percy Jackson since I was in 5th grade, this is something this late 20's fan has been long awaiting. Look past the race swaps, and look at the acting and characters. The characters act the way they're meant to, the story takes the turns and focuses it's meant to. Obviously, things won't 100% be done the same because things don't always translate to film, but WOW am I genuinely excited to see where the rest of this season and (hopefully) five full seasons will do to introduce a new audience to this wonderful series that changed my love of reading at such a young age. 90% of correct adaptation is fine with me!

I can't wait for more to come!

Man, What A Start!
thdoglovr31 December 2023
This might be my most anticipated show of the 2023-2024 years, and I binged the first two episodes as soon as it came out! And boy was it worth it! Seeing the acting was fantastic and Walker Scobell NAILED Percy in this episode, not hardly anything to complain about. It was the beginning, so of course it started a little slow, but did that matter? NO. This was brilliantly paced and wonderfully made to the point where I wanted to reread the books right as soon as I watched it. The First 2 Episodes aired, and I was Immediately clicking as fast as i can to go to NET EPISODE, this was brilliance in the making, and it deserves an 8! It should have gotten Higher than 7.5 in my opinion. CAN'T WAIT FOR EPISODE 4!

The best thing about this episode was SALLY JACKSON! Boy, did she nail that!

Such a great way to start the show!
xandrac20 December 2023
I already love Walker and Aryan as Percy and Grover. I can tell they're going to dive deeper into Percy's emotions and Grover's backstory, which I'm grateful for and I know it'll help the story feel more meaningful.

I will admit that I was surprised by minor changes to Sally's characterization, but I understand why she's more prone to stand up to Gabe here and I'm interested to see how that'll play out later on. Other than that, I don't have any complaints. The CGI looks much better than expected, and the pacing feels right where I want it to be.

Overall, this first episode was full of interactions made better for the screen (compared to how they made the film) and I couldn't be happier with how this turned out.

Why did Rick sign off on this?
Jordan-ward221121 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I grew up reading the books, I have read everything RR has written in this universe multiple times. Poor and non accurate (Disney influenced) casting choices aside, some bazaar changes have been made. Gabe's personality has been changed completely making the ending of the book very questionable now, he is a vile pig of a man in the book, a domestic and child abuser making Sallys actions as we learn them all the more deep and heroic, now he's unrecognisable as at worst a layabout. Grover's personality has been changed and he is now a walking plot exposition, not the lovable happy go lucky character who's scared off everything but finds his bravery to help his friends. The beauty of the writing is we discover the world slowly with Percy, not just have it all explained. The first few chapters go 0-100 and it makes the payoff of Percy's first big hero act with 0 idea what's going on all the greater.

And the worst of it is the dialog is boring and flat. One of the hall marks of Ricks writing is zip and whit, Percy is funny, sassy and a fun character to be our POV. Everything was flat boring and like they were going through the motions. Dare I say it, the move did this story section better!

Percy Jackson's potential is ready to be unlocked
JJSM2224 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The opening of the series adapts the novels perfectly, the acting and cgi are perfectly crafted to pull in your attention. Now those watching might be fearful in getting drawn in because of Disney+ history of cancelling shows after a maximum of 2 seasons. However I honestly feel that this show has the passion that the original books stirred with us and the bringing the loyal fan base to the show is what will provide us with future instalments.

Walker Scobell is a fantastic choice to play Percy Jackson. He might not match the physical description of the books but he posses the combination of heart and humour that Percy has become famous for. The battle between Percy and the Minotaur was epic, tremendous use of effects in building the monster.

If there's one thing I have a problem with is that if feels a bit rushed at times. Maybe an extra episode or two could have slowed things down a bit more. Still once you get your first taste of Percy's escapades, you'll be dying for more.

A Great Start!
cassidyjoseph-4372422 December 2023
As a fairly new fan of the books (finished reading the first 5 a few months ago), I have to say that this is a really good start to the show!

The first thing I'd like to compliment is the.casting, it's amazing! I think Walker Scobell is the perfect casting choice for Percy. From these first 2 episodes, he's done an amazing job. The rest of the cast is amazing as well. I also thought the Minotaur looked so cool, the CGI was great!

The only reason this isn't a 10/10 is because I just have some problems. Wished we spent more time at Yancy Academy and wished we got to see how abusive Gabe really is to Sally. Then again, I really did like seeing Sally talk back to Gabe so easily compared to the books. Other than that 9/10!

Perfect Introduction To The World Of Percy Jackson
The_Film_Nerd_20 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As a big fan of Percy Jackson and from reading the books, I can say that this is what I've finally been waiting for. Not only does the series mostly honour the source material, it also builds the story perfectly for those who haven't yet read the books.

The CGI and visuals were executed superbly, especially the Minotaur. The scene where Percy fights the Minotaur was a personal favourite, showing the brave side of Percy from the very start, just like his mother Sally says at the start of the episode to his younger self. I love the foreshadowing that was used in the early scenes of the episode that portray events to come. It was done in a subtle way that allows those who haven't read the books to have a small clue to the story.

The acting was superb, especially from Walker Scobell. He embodies Percy brilliantly and adds the emotional depth to the character too. His chemistry with Sally and Grover was spot on too, allowing you to be immersed into the story.

If you love fantasy and adventure and are looking for a fun series to enjoy, then this is the show for you. As for Percy Jackson fans, you'll love it!

Absolute Perfection
ltexprs20 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is the right way to adapt this book. The first movie barely spent anytime setting up who Percy Jackson was. Having a whole episode spent on Percy at Yancy Academy (and subsequently getting kicked out), to going home and seeing Sally and Gabe and even The Building Super, to going away to Montauk and then finally making it to camp. A good portion of the book is spent on Percy's journey to Camp Half-Blood so it makes sense it should have more than 10-15 minutes of screentime setting up the world they inhabit. One change that might seem small but that I really like and feel enhances the story is having Percy leave Yancy by himself (no Percy and Grover on a greyhound going into downtown) but instead we see Percy getting into a Yancy Truck to take him to what I presume is the nearest transportation stop (kinda feels like a nod to Argus taking campers into the city for quests and whatnot), but reading the book it always felt a little weird that they kept using Greyhounds to get around in the beginning of the book when in reality youd take many modes of transportation to get somewhere far away. Overall a great first episode with mostly consistent pacing and the emotional scene at the end when Percy sees the minotaur vaporize his mother and assumes hes dead. The whole episode gave us a look into their relationship making it even sadder when Percy loses her and takes his revenge out on the monster who was responsible. I was tearing up with Percy when I watched it happen.

I really got my hopes up for this one
elleenoelle20 December 2023
This was not nearly as good as it could have been. For starters they ruin sally by making her stand up to her dumb husband when the point of her was supposed to be her endurance for her sons sake. They paced it so weird making it too slow in some parts and too fast in others. The actors are nice but their acting isn't very good, not to mention Rick went off about hating how Annabeth in the movie has brown hair and here we've got a black chick playing the blond girl 💀 all the important moments and lines are super short if I hadn't read the book i'd be so confused. Rick got so caught up in representation he let the show get screwed over. There was plenty representation in the books and yet he's not satisfied? Half the white characters got race bent it's almost funny. I feel bad for those actors, they have so much potential and here they are getting screwed over with one trash adaptation after another.

Really Good, Very Captive
e_daneva23 December 2023
I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher is an amazing episode. I have only watched 1 episode of this show, so I can't compare it to any other episodes. This episode is just really captive, you can really pay attention to it. This episode just has great special effects too, it's starting of as a great action series. Man, this series is starting off strong. My favorite characters so far are Percy and Gabe. All the characters are just very well made. I watched the 2 Percy Jackson movies, and they weren't bad, but this show beats those movies so far. I really like this series so far and I am excited to watch the second episode. Maybe I'll watch it today. In all, I give this a 8.4. A great series premiere.

ITS ACTUALLY COME TO LIFE!!✨
rheapathak10 January 2024
There are literally no words, trying to describe how it feels to see the book series your grew up with finally come to life. The effects are INCREDIBLE, and yes though it was a little bit short, I feel like that was okay because it left you wanting the second episode to come out more.

And the casting?! Aryan absolutely aced Grover's part. Right from the minute he was introduced, he was the adorably awkward friend that everyone instantly loved. Nancy was also great, playing was the horrible brat-I despised her from her very first line.

I also feel like Chiron was casted really, really well too, and I love the way he gave riptide to Percy, smooth enough so the people who haven't read the books over look it, but meaningful enough to realise what it was and be like "ohhhhhh that's what he meant."

As for Percy? The way he daydreamed, the uneasiness, the subtle humour that they snuck in, the fight with the Minotaur, his relationship with Sally?! ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. I loved that we got a look at young Percy, and his experiences and the "weird things he saw all the time," so early in the episode-something the movies missed completely🙄 I must say so far Percy has been portrayed perfectly. People keep coming down on his character, saying he didn't have enough wit and humour, but if you have a look at the book, in the part that was represented in this episode, the main parts of personality that got developed was the way he was a magnet for trouble, his insecurities, his protectiveness of Grover, his love for Sally and hate for Gabe.

Check, check, check, check, check.

Isn't that what everyone wanted? A accurate film adaptation? Sure his humour is what makes us all love Percy so much, but that's the thing with books-we get to read Percy's mental monologue. There just isn't that option with the movies, so as far as visual representations go, they really could not have smashed it more.

I can not tell you how excited I am for the rest of this series-especially when characters like Annabeth and Luke come into the picture.

Good job guys. Absolutely aced it:)))))))

Excellent start
anushkaforbes8 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Literally, I loved it. I thought the minor changes were awesom and I liked the added compication of Grover being the reason Percy got kicked out. Cool change with Gabe giving no privacy to Sally and Percy and making his abusive nature a lot more sinister that the blatant abuse that he exhibited in the books to make sure young readers understand it. However, this change seems to have been interpreted as him *not* being abusive because Sally argued with him, which speaks for the lack of media literacy these days. Gabe is abusive and if you can't see that then you really need to re-evaluate what living with someone like that would be like.

The only issue I had with this episode was the lack of build-up and suspense with the Mrs. Dodds reveal.

Doesn't live up to expectations
gregoryc-2891823 December 2023
This episode in of itself is probably a 6 or 7. The problem for me is the minotaur scene didn't have the same feel as the book. In the book it was almost like a horror scene. This didn't have the same feel. This one scene is what's dragging down my score. I'm not gonna miss an opportunity to dunk on the movie, but all I will say is that it's still better than the movie. Otherwise, it was good. The story is well-updated to the present, you can actually see the night scenes, I like how Gabe is portrayed, along with the fact that every scene with Sally feels so much "lighter." The kid actors are decent.

A show that makes the movies look slick
cos_i_cant21 December 2023
I am only reviewing the first two episodes and they are close to the books in story but I just don't care I loved the books and quite like the movies but the series so far is just not doing it for me it's choppely edited and average acting Percy isnt particularly likeable and his squeaky voice is grating, Annabeth is just mean and comes across as a spoilt brat and the rest of the capm are just full blown mental I remember there is some animosity in the books with other campers but not like this. I could go on and on about what I don't like but I will say one good thing is the graphics it's clear no expense has been spared shame its wasted on a average (so far) series. Think I will give it an episode more to see if it improves but I was excited to see this and my hopes have been dashed, let's hope it can turn around.

Mediocre and Underwhelming
fif16003014 January 2024
If you're expecting the great adaptation that Riordan promised all those years ago for all of his loyal readers to finally enjoy, then you're in for a disappointing ride. Not only is the acting subpar, but the writing is lazy, and the story progression alternates from random changes to awkward exposition. The kid actors have little to no chemistry on screen, which makes the show feel a bit more like a community theater play than a $12-15 million-per-episode Hollywood production. I'm all for new adaptations, and understand that not all literacy translates well to the TV screen. Unfortunately, it seems this is the case, yet again, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians. This time, however, viewers will be left wondering why their beloved characters have become disturbingly different from their literary counterparts, and why their quests have been turned into watered-down versions from the original source material. Perhaps the targeted audience has shifted from active fans of his books to a newer (and definitely much younger) audience who is unfamiliar with his work. Yet, it's hard not to wonder that, if this is indeed the case, was it wise for the author to have over-promised, and ultimately under-delivered?

Disney's Wanted to Say They Are UNTOUCHABLE
nightringer-7684025 December 2023
What's wrong with this pilot series: 2 main problem

No. 1 - Casting. Disney's trying to say, they are untouchable and will always do their poisonous policy. The casting of 2 main characters are very annoying, especially when there's a previous big screen version. Mr. Brunner was played by the enigmatic Pierce Brosnan in the movie, and doen played by Disney to a black man. It's Greek mythology, that means tan European, not African American. The same as the girl sidekick that made Alexandra Dadario famous. Very, very annoying.

No. 2. The intro suppose to explain a lot more to make the pilot more enjoyable, but somehow they assumed the audience knew the story. That says a lot about the people behind the creation of this pilot episode, they have too much on their plate and ended up making a B-quality episode instead. What a waste of such opportunity.

In summary, it's Disney's ruining beloved stories, again.
