Enjoyable and entertaining with a fun twist
plarkin17 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
{Possible spoilers} I quite enjoyed this episode, once I got past the "What's going on?" aspect. The idea of "The Lab" as a night club was a laugh and it was fun seeing all the characters' similarities and differences from their usual roles, especially Grayson "Did I mention he smells like a spring day after the rain?" Borasa as a gang-banger. I got a kick out of the usually buttoned-down Booth walking around half naked or with his shirt open all the time. And Hodgins looked great in that trench coat, talking like some '40s noir novelist. The call-backs to previous plot points was amusing and the music was fun -- who knew Sweets could sing? I wonder who on the production team is a BIG Motley Crue fan? Although it added to the episode, I really want say to those who want to push the Booth/Brennan romance angle, remember "Rhoda?" And "Moonlighting?" Don't mess with a winner!

Everyone is mad because Booth and Bones still aren't together...
samecool1116 May 2009
Sure, you feel like you were lied to. "But, they were together in the dream and now they are not and it's like so disappointing!" GET OVER IT! They will be together, in time. Have patience(HIMYM is having the same trouble with the Barney/Robin relationship, slow to go, but it is inevitable). I found this episode to be entertaining and insightful to Booth's mind. In his coma dream he mumbles the facts of his life(him and Bones being married instead of just partners, his brother is a cop instead of him). These mumbled thoughts reveal some truths, like how he would like to marry Bones(along with a few telling lines, Sweets, "I'm a bartender, I'm practically a psychologist." And to Zach, "You're the kind of guy who'd go to jail for not killing someone."). Point is, it was interesting and allowed for extended drama. No one could see it coming, as all previews made it look like Booth was fine and everyone was solving a crime. I liked it and now can't wait for the next season. Of course, that last thirty seconds makes me worry about next season.

Funniest Quote ever in this episode
bryseia5 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
**Contains Spoilers, if you haven't seen season 3, or all of four**

Gotta admit, I've loved David from the very beginning of Buffy (heck, I even own Valentine), and I think everyone does an amazing job on the show!

Now, to my favorite quote: From Sweets "We are Gormagon! Everyone thinks that I am Gormagon, but that's the name of the band!" Sweets was a popular theory for Gormagon, new, strange, and looked a little like the guy that killed, well the guy in his coat closet (I forgot which one he was).

The rest of the episode? Awesome. It was obviously not real, I didn't need the ending to tell me that. But it was FUN.

After all Booth did have tumor, and did have surgery.

And, it's a great reminder that season 5 is coming!

get real
pensman14 October 2010
One of the hallmarks of a great series is the ability to step back (or forward) and demonstrate a sense of humor about itself. Not that there isn't some dark humor in Bones (after all, if nothing else Shakespeare made that a must to disrupt tragedy/drama). In this episode every character slips neatly into an alter ego that matches their regular series character as slick as slick can be. This is a ride. You don't take an amusement park ride seriously, you just enjoy it for what it is: an escape from the daily grind. This episode is a fun house. The mirror distortions are just enough to make you smile; but if you are a regular viewer you know just as you get to the end you will find yourself once again in the "real" world of the series. And that is just what happens here. And who doesn't like Iceland?

My favorite episode *SPOILERS*
Holly_freak18 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Fans who are so negative about the season finale are really starting to annoy me. I would've thought that after watching Bones for so long, fans would've learned to "see behind what you see" - analyze the episodes.

While, yes, I did expect something else from the season finale and yes, I did throw a tantrum after the episode was done, but when I calmed down I watched the episode again and came to realize that this was what I wanted.

I began "reading" between the lines and I now understand that Booth's "dream" is Brennan's story. I believe that while Booth was in a coma, Brennan could have been reading her story aloud. So, what she was writing put images in Booth's head and he saw what she wrote, which I think is really beautiful.

About the first scene, some people think it's a "flash forward" - because of the alarm clocks in the two first scenes (one of them is a military clock and the other isn't) - and therefore we were NOT lied to. The scene was real - in the future. If it wasn't a "flash forward", but from Brennan's story it shows that Brennan wants to hear him say that he loves her and she wants to make love to him. That's the huge change she's made within the past four years of knowing Booth.

Now, about the very last scene, when Booth awoke from his coma... Pretty much everyone thinks Booth really has amnesia and they can't think of other scenarios. Hart Hanson says "Booth's problem isn't remember WHO Brennan is, but WHICH Brennan she is." So, come on people! Understand the season finale. Be positive and think of other scenarios in stead of just thinking "oh, great. Booth has amnesia and now we have to wait another four years before they get together" - it ain't so! They going to get together, you just need to have patience! Have faith! Believe in Hart Hanson! He's a terrific writer and he's a genius! If I could write half as good as him, I would be extremely happy!

One of my favorite episodes of Bones
brookielee-873993 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love this episode of Bones. I love how the episode ends with the story being told separately through Bones and her writing and through Booth and his dream.

I loved seeing all the squinterns together! I was especially happy they brought Zach back for this episode, as well as Caroline, Max, and a few other familiar faces!

This is what makes good TV
AYM040523 May 2009
After reading negative comments about this season finale, I felt compelled to express my opinion.

This works. Period.

This is exactly what a good TV show does. The expectation that we get Booth/Bones together is what a series ending episode would look like. The anticipation, and anxiety surrounding this frustration lack of connection between the two is what makes a show like this work. We know they love one another, we know they WILL get together, and that is what keeps us tuning back.

They teased us this year by setting up the baby story, but just throwing the two into a donated sperm story so they can be together is not what fans want. So, they have to play it out. Now with this new twist in the story, it is another possible year of them teasing where Bones comes to grips with her love of Booth. Perfect storytelling.

I get the impression often that people are so desperate for these two, that they are willing to have the show taken off the air just to see these two kiss. That's the show killer.

"Who's the Boss" is a perfect example of this. 8 years of teasing, and they finally got together. Now that the suspense was over...the show ended a year later. No one wants to see them together, just in the process off. Maybe if they do it just right, a year together and then they keep going..but it will be a fantastic way to send the series.

But that is not for now...bring on Season 5.

Fun episode, but padded
ctomvelu-119 May 2009
Brennan and Booth are a happily married couple who own a swanky nightclub that looks suspiciously like the Jeffersonian lab. A body is discovered on the premises, and Booth falls under suspicion. Saroyan and Booth's brother are the investigating detectives. Various employees, including Sweets the bartender, Mr. Nigel Murray the entertainment director, Jared the chef and Zack (yes, Zack), who does something or other at the club, all lie to protect Booth. That's because they all think he's guilty, including Angela, the club's hostess. Brennan, of course, knows better and it is us up to B&B to solve the case. Hodgins, interestingly, is a best-selling crime writer who hangs out at the club and narrates this story. And Brennan's dad is a crooked councilman who is of little help, since they never paid him off. Maybe the slyest character nod is having the one black intern who was the most conservative and quiet among the interns show up as a flashy, bad-ass rapper/impresario/gangsta. Now, we all know Booth went in for brain surgery in the previous episode after having crossed paths with Stewie of FAMILY GUY. So could this be Booth dreaming while under anesthesia? Just wait for the denouement. It will knock your socks off, and maybe have you shedding a tear or two. The episode goes on a little long, but it is devilishly clever. And we get to see B&B in a tight, naked, sweaty embrace in their boudoir. Like House getting it on with Cuddy, it was a long time in the making.

Seem to be in the minority

Warning: Spoilers
Although I missed the first few minutes of the season finale, I simply loved every minute I did see. I thought the story was fun, it was great seeing old characters make comebacks, and I literally cried "No!" aloud to the TV when Bones hit the delete button. The last conversation made the whole thing plausible for me, and I think it was wonderful. I am a little worried about that final "Who are you?", but if any group of writers can make it work, it is this group. As for someone who commented that it is David who makes the show work -- this is a tight ensemble. You can't really pluck anyone out without consequences (I still miss Zach) and the chemistry between Brennan and Booth is what makes the show good enough that I watch the same reruns over and over every afternoon on TNT.

It grows on you until it's your favorite.
Ladyeowyn32829 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I will admit, when I first saw this episode, I hated it. Well, sort of. I hated that we weren't seeing what was going on in the real world and we had to travel a bunny trail in the meantime. But since then, I've seen what happened after, and then I went back to this episode and watched it again. Needless to say, I liked it much better the second time.

Here's the thing: they should have made this an episode in season 5. Had they woken up Booth and done the whole "Booth had a dream he was married to Brennan and got all confused for several weeks" thing without showing us the dream, we would have been wondering: What happened in that dream? Why were the clothes awesome? What is this other life that Booth fell in love with, only to awaken to the sheer disappointment that Brennan is not expressing her undying love for him? By the time we saw the dream episode, we would have been chomping at the bit to find out what happened in coma-world. Which brings me to my main point: This is one of my favorite episodes. As a stand-alone, it has an interesting plot line, a satisfying ending for the mere fact that we know it's one of the characters already introduced, and a love story. We can take this episode by itself and be satisfied with a job well done.

And when we add the context of the real-life Bones situation, we can love it more. It's a window into the heads of our two main characters; Brennan, who wrote the story, clearly pictures another life with the man she loves and what it would be like if she didn't see death every day. Booth, who dreams it, imagines what would happen if he acted on his own feelings and falls in love with the result.

So, maybe you'll hate this episode when you see it at the end of the fourth season, but I suggest that you go back, when all is said and done, and watch it again. See if you don't fall in love with it too.

Season 4 finale a real bummer
theriault-jennifer18 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I have been a fan of Bones since its arrival in 2005 (fan of David Boreanaz since "Buffy" inception). For the season 4 finale, I knew as soon as they mentioned Bones and Booth getting together that it was fantasy, something from Booth's mind while under the knife. And to use the "lost memory" that has been played out thousands of times in season endings - boo to both writers and producers. You should know better. From a long-time fan of David Boreanaz, better come up with a spectacular 5th season, or end it and let him start something else - he's the reason it has lasted as long as it has. With shows based on realistic crime solving writing, nothing is worse than taking it to the "fantasy" realm when fans knows that this would never happen, at least not yet. They did this to another favorite a few years back, "Dark Angel," having the two main characters sleep together in someone's mind (not real) and the show ended in 2 seasons.

Gives me hope for season 5
tom_redgate15 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was for me easily the best episode of Bones to date. The start was slightly shocking and I instantly presumed that it was after the operation but once he opened the door it was obvious what was going on. There is nothing wrong with a dream episode, as stated in other comments, especially if it is clearly shown to be a dream, as done here. This episode gives us a great insight to how the two would actually act as a couple which is sure to happen in a following series, even though I do have my dough's as to how the will be able to continue the show long after that happens as the anticipation and complex relationship between them is one of the main drawing features. The only thing that was slightly worrying for me was the last line of "who are you" but after watching the trailer for season 5 and what Hart Hanson has said my fears have been quelled. Bring on the next season.

The End in the Beginning
krysdavidson15 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I think this is a great show. I just discovered it in June or July this year. My husband acquired all four seasons and we just finished watching them this past Sunday. Just in time for the new season. Everybody knows Booth and Bones will get together. I want to know if Hodgins and Angela are going to patch things up? This was a great way to end the season. I have a serious love/hate relationship with cliffhangers. I love 'em, but I hate that you always have to wait (forever) for the new season (except this one for me). I have a question though. Was this "story" taken from an earlier episode of "Bones" or did I see this on a different show? I'd swear it was "Bones", but I can't find anything in the episode guide that sounds like this.

My favourite episode
elinemee12 October 2020
The first time I watched the show, and this episode, I was confused at first and liked it by the end. Recently I've been rewatching the series, and I found myself looking forward to this episode for the last two seasons. Finally got to it, and I have to say, it is my favourite episode so far, perhaps my favourite episode of the entire show. There are other reviews here that explain objectively why it's so good, but for me, it's just a damn good episode and I love it.

Besties it's called an AU
maddiestoerp22 March 2022
This is easily in my top 5 episodes of Bones. I know some people aren't super huge fans of the whole 'Booth's coma' thing, but it's so fun! Zack makes a cameo, Bones and Booth are technically together, Sweets sings in a fedora, and Wendell is an overly loyal bouncer (insert heart eyes here). It's nice to see everyones faces on screen under different circumstances.

Booth and Brennan together
mitchrmp31 July 2016
This is an alternate reality episode. Rather it's coming from Brennan or Booth or both, it's unclear. What is clear is that they both have deep feelings for each other.

For four years, the fans of Bones have been watching Booth and Brennan tip toe around their love for each other. The fans are given a trip with a "What if" episode. Booth and Brennan are married and own a night club. All the cast is there, but mixed up in roles. I found it interesting of who chose to be the bad guy - and can see either Booth or Brennan coming to this conclusion...

We've been waiting for these two to kiss ever since the Christmas episode in Season 3. Well, we got it!

Warning: Spoilers
I hate a story or movie that is based on a dream or drug induced imaginings. This whole episode made no sense what-so-ever. I felt I wasted 45 minutes of my life trying to understand what is going on. Nothing was going on is the simple truth. No, please don't repeat this trash. I made the same comment about an episode of Terminator that was based on a drug induced dream. When we were kids at school the English teacher told us, never end a story with: "and then I woke up!" Fiction is good, but fiction of fiction is no good at all. I agree it would have been a great idea to enable Bones and Boothe to "get together". But let's make it a real event, not a stupid 4 day "wet" dream!

Pulling All the Stops
Hitchcoc4 February 2023
There is so much here it's hard to evaluate it. Since it is a dream, it doesn't fit into the Bones saga. The fun is in the characterization, using every element of the Bones menagerie and placing them in a police drama which takes place in a night club. Some of the characters have similar personalities; others are exaggerated. Still others maintain their original being. All this happens as Booth is undergoing brain surgery after agreeing to be the father of Brennan's baby. The cool thing is that everyone plays it straight. There is no effort to just do it for laughs. If someone were to chance on this episode without knowing the series, it would work pretty well.

Actually the Best Episode of Bones Ever
darthmaulknits11 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I probably think about this episode 829 times a day. It is so perfectly done from the voice over story telling, to the setting, to the twist ending. Seeing all of the characters as their alternate universe selves is a blast and the surprise in the end with AU Brennan being pregnant gets me EVERY. TIME. I think the whole dream sequence being a story Brennan is reading to Booth in his coma is a perfect metaphor for their connection. The writers of the show expertly draw out this romance in a slow burn over so many seasons that it is as impressive as it is frustrating. I could live in this alternate universe forever.

P. S. Hi The Bones Booth!

lifeisgood11010 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I get what the writers were going for, but it didn't work. It was so odd compared to the way this show typically goes. I got annoyed and didn't pay a ton of attention, but just wanted to see the end to see if it was a Dream state of Booth while in surgery for a brain tumor.

Lacklustre
foghorn_clj17 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I just re-watched this episode. I couldn't help but laugh at the memory of my younger self watching this for the first time and losing my mind with anger at the blatant bait and switch with Brennan and Booth.

Now older and a lot wiser when I watch this episode I see just how weak it is.

Sure having all the squints play different characters and Brennan and Booth being married is fun. But the plot is VERY week. And bringing Gormogon into it was a cheap plot. As was the 7 min music video at the end.

Yet another misfire for Bones
reddragon-1414 May 2009
Acknowledging the attempt at a change of pace, I stopped watching after ten minutes though I kept checking back at the commercials on the program I switched to, but it never got any better. It was an opportunity for every character to make an appearance, except one. I don't watch the show to see that. I watch for the humor and repartee between the characters and the unusual cases they get involved in and eventually solve through the team effort of the whole cast. They always seem to have at least one episode per season that just doesn't work. This was that one. I know they are fighting for ratings, sometimes they are fairly good, sometimes rated lower. I don't think it really has anything to do with the quality of the show, just that it's on FOX and the only shows that stand out on that network are House, American Idol, and 24 and 24 is getting old and when AI completes its season, FOX's ratings drop as well. I enjoy Bones, have liked David B. since Buffy and Angel and have noticed Emily D. in guest spots on several older shows, one where she was the 'bad guy'. Keep up the 'good' work and I'll keep watching.
