Slightly Disturbing
Theo Robertson27 August 2013
I caught this on youtube and was described as " The Soul of Wit is based on elements of a performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet viewed through the synesthesia and fractured logic of a schizophrenic mind (informed by my experiences and observations in New York State mental hospitals). " . I'm not sure if this comment was written by director / writer Edward Folger but it also owes a lot to William Shakespeare who earns a co-writer credit

If like me you're clueless about fractured logic and synaesthesia you should still be able to empathise with the poor patients of a state mental facility . After all if you're spending all your free time constantly churning out comments on a website then this indicates a mental obsession that shouldn't be described as normal . Let's face it if you spend all day watching films to escape reality that's preferable but not much different to using drugs to escape reality and through no fault of their own the patients seen here have been unfortunate enough to escape reality , possibly forever due to brain chemistry

It's not uncommon to see a contemporary present day setting where characters talk in direct quotes from the bard . What makes this short film stand out slightly is that while never being blatantly expressionist director Edward Folger does give the audience a small taste of what the living nightmare of intense mental illness must feel like . He does this via sound mix and editing . As someone who's noise sensitive I can confirm the misery noise can cause someone and this is a rather depressing short film
