I saw this film on TV last year and was pleasantly surprised. I usually don't watch documentaries, but this one looked interesting. I wasn't disappointed. The story of the Latvian President is a glimpse into how politics really works behind the scenes. Like the movie the War Room, the filmmakers aren't afraid to expose the ugly side of politics. This woman who spent most of her life in Canada decides she wants to return to the place of her birth - the tiny country of Latvia. Not only that, she runs for the top political job - the PRESIDENT OF THE COUNTRY! Knowing she can't win and has nothing to lose and tells people how she really feels about the issues.
Her frankness and honesty take the parliament by surprise. And due to a power struggle in the Latvian political scene, she gets elected by a very slim margin. She doesn't even have a place to stay since her house and country cottage are back in Canada. She packs up and moves into the Presidential Palace in Riga.
She's smart and honest but not used to the rough and tumble of Russian politics (Latvia is Russia's plaything). She learns to play rough herself.
Great film. Worth watching for anyone who likes politics.
