Story-9, Script-2
rich-mac21 March 2023
There seems no escaping the fact that this show is being wrecked by a script which is at times just woeful.

As an example, throughout the show we see some pretty sophisticated IT infrastructure and deployments, and yet on the Brit side, the guy basically in charge of the governments IT platform demonstrates less understanding than you would expect from an undergrad - and who says things that are just plain wrong on so many levels. Not good.

Then there's the hospital scene where the PA announces "Can any doctors go to room # (can't remember the room #) - I mean - it's a hospital, hospitals are full of doctors... do they need a brain surgeon or an oncologist?

Despite the frequent gaffes like these the actual story is a good one - and with some very sharp script writing it could have been an excellent one. Shame.

On the other hand, Liaison is almost saved by having a great cast, great locations, and some snappy cinematography, all of which convey a slick production - so it's actually a real shame that the script is so bad at times, because that just wrenches you out of absorption. And it's not just a dialogue problem, there's also an awkwardness to some of the plot exposition that has left me more than little confused at times.

So the real quandary here is how could something with so many promising and professional elements have been so badly mismanaged in the script development department?

I was not bored
I do not get the bad reviews people are giving this show. Sure it's far-fetched like most espionage thrillers. I thought this was so much better than the laughable, The Night Agent.

The acting was really good. I love Eva Green. She was amazing and absolutely brilliant playing the character of Vanessa in Penny Dreadful series.

This show was very interesting to me. You get a real taste of Europe while watching. It is such a shame to see what we humans have done to this earth. Nuclear/industrial plants on Dunkirk beach, gigantic monstrous glass buildings everywhere in Europe and in Brussels EU commission headquarters is over the top human trash. It is no better here in the U. S. A, Canada, South America. Everywhere humans have left scars all over this earth. It is shameful.

Getting back to the show I thought it was suspenseful and I like the characters even though they were all very flawed.

These types of shows (unless they are true stories) are not to be taken as realistic or in a serious fashion. They are pure entertainment. Some I like and are watchable others I love, love, love and then some stink. Liaison was a show I liked. I was not bored and I found the plot quite interesting.

It gets better...
amb-4458211 March 2023
I've watched all the episodes so far and as the plot is unfolding, I'm finding the series more enjoyable. I agree that the first couple episodes were off to a rocky start, but it's definitely getting more interesting now. I personally really enjoy these types of shows, and let's be honest, Apple TV shows beat most Netflix dramas nowadays in terms of production value and acting. I say give the show a chance, get past the first couple more cliche episodes and you may wind up liking it. I think the plot will only continue to unravel and surprise us as more characters reveal who they really are and what side they're playing.

Stunning density of cliche, everything telegraphed. Plothambles from trope to trope
random-7077828 February 2023
I don't always agree with professional critics, but this has gotten stunning bad reviews for good reason. Even the lead actors refused to do scheduled promotion for this mess, this clearly wanting to distance themselves.

To be frank, this production is just awful. The series has a feel of a committee project where every possible trope and cliché is pumped into the script.

Like most of us I am forgiving and willing to suspend disbelief in an action series, event for a cringingly bad dialogue and plot. But the action here consists of innumerable foot chases and absurd shootouts that demonstrate no one here is credibly an "operative."

There is neither anything stimulating, nor is also not a single smart movement in the entire script. Not one.

Worse yet, Eva Green and. Vincent Cassel are deeply ill-used, frankly abused in this mess.

I enjoyed watching this
Alexcailliau30 May 2023
I'm not going to brag about the bad or good reviews. I've watched season 1 in a couple of days and I enjoyed watching it. It's not that I will recommend and praise it. But it's not bad at all!

I've seen much French people complaining about subs (or it's absence of it). I'm a French native and I don't need English subs only for the Arabic parts. I actually enjoyed the fact Cassel and Green switched languages depending on whom they're talking to. It gave it an extra real feeling. And that should be more often the case.

Regarding the story, I feel it could have gain more thickness if there was a few more episode to develop some of the characters, mostly the one of Albert.

On the tech bases, yes there are a few hick-ups but that's often the case in series... Liaison is far from perfect, but if Apple keeps on investing in European productions, their level will rise up! And definitely, that will change us to some us superprods which offer nothing...

And on a personal note: using teardrop by massive attack is spot on! 👍

Enjoyed it
sharonallan668 April 2023
I enjoyed this TV thriller. Fast moving and adventurous. I normally take a long time browsing through various streaming apos then reading reviews and end up watching nothing trying to find something to watch. I'm not an expert on production script lighting etc just want to be entertained. I binge watched this over a couple of evenings and really liked it. It kept me wondering what would happen next. Yes there are some plot holes but the characters and story kept me hooked. Eva Green plays her part well and Vincent Cassellbl hebis so hot. I thought there was real chemistry between these two. Good to see a fellow Scot Peter Mullan who played his character well. Good stuff. Give it a shot.

Engrossing
rsridhar200519 March 2023
Good thriller with Eva Green and Vincent Cassel are pitted against each other.

Tensions between the nations are shown as contemporary and story line is engaging.

The director (Stephen Hopkins) is able to maintain the momentum to keep the suspense alive.

Eva Green is beautiful as ever. She emotes well, where melodrama is required.

Vincent Cassel is getting old and it is very evident. Most of the other characters are well etched and their performance is up to the mark.

Story, even though not very unique, helps to maintain the tempo. Saw 4 episodes and good going guys. Attractive locales in rural areas of France and London add charm to the story.

Not As Good As it Could Have Been
Derek1178 April 2023
Having seen the complete series, I can't recommend this Euro-series. The story never really grabbed the viewer, and (maybe because I'm an American) the "risk" never really registered with me. Beyond that, I didn't like most of the characters (many of whom will killed off--with no impact on me) or their choices. The one "pure at heart" character basically gets shafted--while many of the loathsome characters survive and flourish. Speaking of characters: I've always loved Eva Green since her early films, like "Dreamers"--and lately she's been making horrible choices in projects. "Liaison" is just the latest. Finally, there's Vincent Cassel. I've never liked him--especially as a Leading/Romantic type. He's way too self-centered; and his facial expressions gives new meaning to the phrase "He has a punch-able face." Needless to say, I found his character in "Liaison" unappealing. Bottom line: because of a storyline & characters not worth caring about, and unappealing actors, in a world of "Night Agent" and "Gray Man" and even "Red Notice" there is no reason to spend hours with this silly "Liaison."

Intriguing concept
lucasherrmann26 February 2023
So far the story is quite intriguing. Yes, it is a typical spy thriller, but if well done I think spy thrillers can be very entertaining even if they follow cliches and tropes (Jack Ryan does this very well). So far this series is a mix between "Jack Ryan" and "Slow Horses".

Vincent Cassel and Eva Green are great actors and they can make this a worthwhile watch even if the story is quite predictable so far and does rely on the typical cadence of spy thrillers.

If you watch it, I recommend not using the "English" audio setting as they decided to dub the French, Arab and Russian dialogue in this setting and it's horrible. If you select the "French (France)" audio setting you get English dialogue in English, French in french, Arab in Arab and Russian in Russian - just makes the international atmosphere much more authentic instead of dubbing everything to English.

Warning: Spoilers
Promising great cast and... rubbish writing.

Hackers ? Right five mn then a classical action movie more about the couple.. If you like spying stories move away... The twist is so twisted that it seems ridiculous... Too bad In French a character in a moliere's play used to say: qu'allait-il faire dans cette galère !!

And because I need more characters I will have to complain Cassel is not a spy but rather a skinnier version of die hard without humor.

It has to be an American production right?

The lonely cow boy and the terrible ex not able to move on... really?

What can need 21 characters? I know !

One episode and done
Yarayaraman2 March 2023
The first 10 minutes sets a great pace, and then it all falls apart.

For a series that is centred around cybersecurity, it is important that what the experts say at least makes some logical sense. For some bizarre reason, instead of having one person with a basic level of technical knowledge on set or at least reviewing the script, they opted instead to pick random words out of "Cybersecurity for Dummys"!

You don't "look for fragments in a Slack space", or "leave temporary back doors in the DMZ", and combining these sentences with the word "triage" doesn't make them sound more credible. Concluding that a system failed due to a software bug rather than a hack because it hasn't been updated for 20 years, is nonsense. Not updating software on critical infrastructure is not very credible, but the rather more obvious explanation is that this is the very weakness that a hacker would exploit!! So, the head of UK cybersecurity is so incompetent that they have NEVER used a computer before..... or they are a traitor? The latter would only make sense if the entire system was so corrupt that someone that incompetent could make it that far undetected.

Trying to ignore the above is very hard, but I accept that many people would not know or care about this if it propelled the story along. Unfortunately, this is simply a red flag for more ridiculous dialogue and situations throughout. The master of spy-craft, played by Vincent Casselle (a brilliant actor given very little to work with) seems to be quite incompetent. While I always love seeing London as a backdrop to a fast pasted thriller (and partly why I started watching it alongside the other usually great actors), the chases through central London were not believable and literally didn't go anywhere. Eva Green and Peter Mullan have marginally more believable lines, but little to do.

If you're looking for a fun spy thriller, watch Apple TV's Tehran or Slow Horses instead, which are both excellent. Don't waste your time on this though.

It's pretty good
pd-27 March 2023
I'll admit, this is the kind of show that hits the spot for me, acting is great, plot so far seems well done (e2+), nothing to complain.

I work within IT for the past 15 years (devops atm) and the review complaining about 'wording' from a MANAGER position is just lame, have you ever heard a manager in IT field ?

They literally say those ' big words ' and they mostly don't understand the technical details at all. To me this is pretty fitting.

Only person who has never spoken to a manager in IT field would complain I think.

Anyway guys, try watching first and don't rely on reviews of some random people on the internet :)

Not as bad as they say
dlxmarshall12 April 2023
Yes the script is not great (imagine something to do with writing in multiple languages but what do I know) and Eva Green is as painfully bad and typecast as always (seriously she plays the same role in everything). But it's actually perfectly watchable. Vincent Cassell always has an intense on screen presence. I will defer to the cyber security nerds complaining about reality in that respect, but if you don't really care then it's quite fun. And as other have mentioned, good cinematography and set scenes. I doubt you or I will remember it in a coupe of years but while waiting for something meaty to come along it's above average.

Started OK, but lame ending
andrew_jakobs11 June 2023
The show starts out OK, and looks to be promising. But the further the story goes, the more lame/unbelievable the writing is becoming.

Over the course of the series we get to know the characters and a bit about their backstory. Vincent Cassel and Eva Green work well together and should have had the back of better writers.

The technology involved is as always not really good read up about by the writers. They make it seem too simple, especially since it also involves a Cyber security agency which would certainly have noticed some leads, as it's impossible to leave no traces, especially IF someone on the inside would be part of it (I'm not saying that it is in this show).

But the ending is just lame writing, especially considering how certain people behave during the series. It really puts a big domper on the whole series as you really think, is this what I have spend almost 6 hours watching for? The whole last episode is just a culmination of bad writing. And that's really sad, as it could have been a great show, but the ending really ruins it (and some parts in the middle also drag too much).

A deception
searchanddestroy-16 May 2023
It's my fault, I epected some kind of BUREAU DES LEGENDES like espionnage series, speaking of the whereabouts, disgusting behind the scene movements, manipulation, cynism of the governments, brutal Intelligence services methods and so on.... Ok, you find some of those elements here but it remains too much Hollywood oriented, not enough "French" for my taste. The conclusio is absolutely awful, unbearable, despite a good cast, a good directing, a big budget. But, I repeat, everythng collapses in the end. Gerard Lanvin in a role that reminds me a close character for him in SECRET DEFENSE back in 2008, a French espionnage film.

could have been better
antoniotierno10 May 2023
Alhough it gets to hold the promise, this international political thriller doesn't have finally so many cards up its sleeve. Liaison features Syrian hackers who've accessed state secrets, other hackers who also are messing with infrastructure in the U. K., and a mercenary who's chasing down the Syrian hackers, but might be in love with a British officer. Pretty familiar fare for the fans (for example) of Jason Bourne or Jack Ryan. So the first episode began with a certain promise, but the show fizzled. They could have made something generic but still good, but this affair was not that remarkable and bogged down by a weak and despicable lead character.

A potentially much better show let down by poor script writing and casting
calorne29 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There was quite a lot to like here. I thought that Vincent Cassel was good and I really liked the performances of Laëtitia Eïdo and Lyna Dubarry.

There was an inventive terrorist target and some good action scenes in terms of combat - although the budget did not stretch to anything more than a pencil sketch of the two disasters.

But the scenes between Eva Green and Daniel Francis were beyond unconvincing. I thought they were cringingly awkward. Given that they were in a five year (I think) relationship you would think that Alison would be able to embrace Albert in a way that didn't look like she was trying to attempt some sort of peculiar wrestling hold. The actors were not assisted by the unnatural scripting for these scenes, but I think that this was a casting mishap. I am not sure if they test out how actors work together before hiring, but if not maybe that should be de rigueur to save audiences's toes curling.

There are iconic locations but the filming failed to make the most of them. There was a lot of very mundane framing indeed and some choppy cutaways.

But I was engaged enough to watch the whole series and to see if I was right that Peter Mullan was a bad 'un (this was given away by some uncharacteristic grinning from him in early scenes, which immediately set alarm bells ringing)

fine binge
SnoopyStyle8 January 2024
Two Syrian hackers are desperate to defect and offers France intel on a massive future hack. Private contractor Gabriel Delage (Vincent Cassel) is sent to retrieve them, but the operation goes wrong. The hackers do manage to escape to London. Gabriel is sent again without London's knowledge. Alison Rowdy (Eva Green) working under Richard Banks (Peter Mullan) are working against an unknown computer hacker. London is devastated from various computer attacks.

This is a French-English production and often switches between these and other languages. There is some good French English rivalry. I like the Syrians early on although they become more like objects in the story. Cassel and Green are compelling espionage types. They are relatively good together. The villains are less compelling. This is a lesser espionage thriller series. It's a limited series with six episodes. It's a fine binge but easily lost within the genre.

Don't listen to dumb critics it is pretty cool.
BobMalugLugaLugaLuga28 February 2023
I have not wanted to watch a series, or binge watch, in a long time. For me personally, Peripheral was awesome and believe it or not, i totally wanted to watch this entire series, but it only comes out weekly. It really gripped me. And I am very, very picky. It just feels very unique. A list actors. Written very well and a nice pace which is great for my ADD media watching. Eva is awesome is as always. Cassel, Mulan, etc are awesome. Really all the acting is the best. I really got brought into the story right away. I forgot everything else, I forgot and just sunk right in. And that is hard for me to do. I usually have my critic hat on for a while before I believe the story. But not with this. So I hope you like it as much as I did.

Heavy burden
dudma-22 April 2023
I cannot believe that Vincent Cassel and Eva Green signed up for this after the script be read. The premise is good, but the development is bad, very bad. They didn't read the dumb lines, only the premise...

What a waste of good actors, what a waste of money! Why don't hire a good writer? Beside, the director didn't know how to organize all the mess...

The writers seems to know nothing about computers or.espionage. The director seems to be to much subservient to the (bad) script.

The only salvation lies in the talent and charisma of the main actors. It's a too much heavy burden.

At least the locations are beautiful...

Very good and exciting story which is shown in 6 episodes. I always look forward to the next episode! The last episode of the season will be launches at 31st March.

In my eyes, the season shows the risks that arising from the ever-increasing digitization. This reference to current developments makes it really recommendable. I really hope that there will be another season and that we will see more stories around cybersecurity.

The cast of actors fits the story and the action perfectly. A very good composition. I bi. Curious whether this will be expanded in another season or remains unchanged.

Poor script and poor acting.
marcfryd-041207 March 2023
The director does know how to film and some action scenes are efficiently handled. Alas, the script for the film and, crucially, the dialogues, seem to have been written by ChatGPT... None of the dialogues ring true. The acting is stilted and totally unconvincing. The scenes are super short snippets compounding cliché upon cliché, probably on the premise that the average viewer's attention span does not exceed 15 seconds. As has been rightly said by other reviewers, the highly technical argument of the series is not reflected in the primitive and amateurish language in which it is depicted. In short, having struggled to watch episode One, I have no plans to go any further.

A French Thriller That Will Keep You on the Edge of Your Seat
FilmFanatic202322 March 2023
Liaison is a French thriller that follows the story of two agents, former lovers, who must work together to combat international cyberattacks threatening the UK. The show is full of suspense, action, and intrigue, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

The show's strengths lie in its well-written characters and its fast-paced plot. The characters are complex and believable, and the plot is full of twists and turns. The show also features some great action sequences, which will keep you entertained.

However, the show does have some weaknesses. The show can be a bit slow-paced at times, and the plot can be a bit convoluted. Additionally, the show's violence can be a bit jarring for some viewers.

Overall, Liaison is a well-made thriller that is sure to please fans of the genre. The show is full of suspense, action, and intrigue, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

I happened upon this the other night and it has a decent cast! Viccent Cassel, Eva Green but this is so far fetched and badly acted it's beyond comprehension! Oh and I love Peter Mullen ( tho he sounds like a Scouser in this. But everyone is inept in this! CC TV everywhere and Casell and Green are spotted together umpteen times yet they've no mention of that! She even has police come to her car and yet no one has connected them yet!?! I don't know their connection? At first I thought brother and sister but that had been abundantly clear they are not. Tho just imagine if these authorities ( where this inept) and security of an entire country were this clueless?!? I like Green and Casell but I think this is over the writers head and out of his depth! I will continue since I've nothing else at the moment but sadly I don't have Haute Espiors for this atm!

haha here we are .... after 40 years ...
anxiousgayhorseonketamine29 October 2023
So yes 40 years of globalization neoliberal selfishness and greed and we have a mainstream series displaying the real problem we are now facing ie private companies running the world on top of elected governments rendering them obsolete and gutless

  • this is clearly shown here .... expect many other "fiction" pieces in the same vein

  • of course even if in the end the "good guys" gain the upper hand or not is moot. In fiction. In the real world it is going to matter A LOT

  • i see many people having a problem with the feasibility of this opus. Well let us offer 3 words here: suspension of disbelief. Folks will say the Tech language is not accurate. Minority concern of no import. Are there moments when the tension which is always high drops? Yes. Was Eva Green character getting away with more than is feasible? Absolutely

  • seems like those mobile phones they use cannot be geolocated EVER although all these players are secret service or thereabouts. So yes that is implausible²²² .... as if

But overall we have an electric tale here high-voltage never boring gripping 99% of the time and we have those actors.

Many languages are heard here ENG FR ARAbic mostly but there are bits of others too. It cuts any chance of tedium ... and gives a more cultural kaleidoscopic feel

Brexit is much discussed here and its implications for international European security and to my mind the first time i have seen this in a fiction piece

All in all a solid 8.

PS the last 2 episodes may be a tad TOO James Bond and a smidgeon clumsy otherwise really good to go.
