Round One: The Greatest (1942-1964)

No boxer living or dead has had so much written about him or documentaries or movies made about him than Muhammad Ali.

5 years after his death comes this gargantuan documentary from Ken Burns.

It was wise to wait after his death. There was always a feeling that while acknowledging that Ali was flawed, there were biographers and writers who were either part of the Ali fan club or the hate club.

As ever the first episode is thoroughly researched and meticulously crafted. A trademark of Burns.

He has also opted to get some new talking heads. This might be as some main players like Angelo Dundee and Ferdie Pacheco have also passed on.

The first instalment looks at Ali's early life, his amatuer boxing career and ends with him becoming heavyweight champion of the world.

It also culminates with Cassius Clay becoming Muhammad Ali.

There is no doubt a lot of this would be familiar to people interested about Muhammad Ali.

Burns does give a fresh take, a slightly different perspective of both looking at Ali the boxer and a human being.
