A delicious mystery.
Sleepin_Dragon10 July 2022
TV celebrity cook Prunella Gladwell arrives in great Slaughter to host a local cookery contest. Sister Boniface springs into action when one of the contestants dies.

Imagine Fanny Craddock crashing into The Great British bake off, that's the setting, throw in a murder, and you have the plot, this was possibly my favourite episode so far, a really enjoyable mystery, with some cracking characters, and a good dollop of humour. Some wonderfully corny lines thrown in, but I think they captured that specific type of show very well.

Sylvestra Le Touzel was an absolute joy as Prunella, she reminded me of her Mary Whitehouse type character from Endeavour, she was awesome here, and had real presence, definitely my favourite character from the series so far. She's done so much since that famous Heineken advert.

Once again, people will be critical over the attitudes shown by some of the characters, and it's fair to say the era perhaps wasn't as tolerant as was presented here, but who cares, it's make believe, it's a wonderful forty five minutes of escapism.

Gloriously good fun, 9/10.

Another slice of period fun

Good to see the obnoxious chef get her just desserts at the end of the episode, even if she does survive the attempts on her life. I felt slightly sorry for the killer, I must say. This was another fun, enjoyable episode and it's always good to see Mrs Clam. They seem to have toned down the relationship between Sam and Ruth.

Who's the real Queen of the Kitchen

Warning: Spoilers
Sylvestra Le Touzel does an amazing job playing Prunella Gladwell, the Queen of the Kitchen and like one of those celebrity chefs who quite sadly humiliates and puts down contestants on her television program. It seems as though Prunella Gladwell was the precursor to the modern day ones, some of whom berate the contestants and kitchen staff.

Anyway, this episode kind of got a bit somewhat political in a racial way, with the forbidden LGBTI love between Major James Gladwell (husband of Prunella) and Azad Verma (an Indian helper to Prunella). Kind of ahead of the times mind, but this could offend the sensibilities of modern-day viewers if you know what I mean.

Queen of the Kitchen

Warning: Spoilers
It is time for the Great British cook off and it takes place in a tent.

Celebrity chef, Prunella Gladwell has come to town for a recording of a hit show. However there is more than soggy bottoms to contend with.

During the recording one of the contestants drops dead. Luckily Sister Boniface was also taking part.

Maybe Prunella was meant to be a victim. Her husband would have happily had seen the back of her.

Prunella Gladwell is meant to be a thinly disguised Fanny Craddock type. This one might have pilfered a few recipes in the past.

Sister Boniface is better at using science to solves murders than bake a cake.

Queen of the kitchen

Celebrity chef, Prunella Gladwell, comes to St Vincent's Convent to record an episode of her TV cooking competition, Queen of the Kitchen, with members of the Great Slaughter Women's Institute. When one of the contestants dies, it's up to Sister Boniface, Detective Gillespie and Sergeant Livingstone to find the killer. Being an obnoxious character, Prunella has plenty of people who would to kill her. Average episode, but still passable, though certain issues are portrayed inaccurately in the 1960's era. But it's just escapism really. Love the costumes, the cosiness of this programme.
