Observations of season 4
fh_321 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There is a lot of filler this season
  • all of the rodeo stuff is just Taylor Sheridan boosting his ego. Most of his scenes are cringeworthy and while interesting I have no idea what the point of the rodeo or horse reading is beyond what we see on screen. There is not enough depth of content to make it interesting
  • the Indian mysticism takes up a lot of time and does not make sense to the story
  • separating the children detracts from the power of the family on the ranch
  • Jamie has become a waste of time on the show. Still trying to figure out how his real dad set up the attack on the family only to have Jamie discoverer he is adopted when he looks for his birth certificate. I guess he never needed a passport or a real ID license.

  • after all that Beth has done for John and all that a John has done to others - John kicks Beth out of his life because some one night fling got suckered by Beth as part of a plan to save John's ranch? That is the dumbest thing to happen this season.

The elastic's getting stretched to snapping point
cordenw27 December 2021
Thank goodness they have the cowboy scenes 'cos the rest of it is getting treacly slow.

It still draws you in and you can't even take a toilet break, but the life is ebbing out of this series.

For some unfathomable reason they have played up the roles of Jamie's father, who I think is a very poor casting choice, and the kid, Carter

The father seems too smug and self righteous for his murderous background and the kid, well, he's just the motherlode they mine for every trite emotion possible.

We finally get to see some balls from Mr D in his relationship with his daughter Beth, but there was simply no direction at all in this episode.

Jamie himself is such a wuss, pussy whipped by his girlfriend and so sandbagged by his real Dad that you lose any sympathy for the character.

The side story about Jimmy at the 6666 ranch in Texas is well put together and there's some outstanding displays of horsemanship that have you gasping in admiration.

I enjoyed it and the hour went quick but I had to fast forward on a few scenes.... which is never a good sign.

You have to say that Costner himself carries the load, he's just brilliant in every scene, especially the one where he faces off against the new Sheriff.

I still love the show.

Even crocodiles have a vulnerable point

Warning: Spoilers
Beth is by far the best written character on the show. She's a loyal and fiercely loyal to those she loves. She's so much better than some fans realize because they refuse to see past the book's cover. You miss a lot of amazing stories that way- I'm speaking literally and metaphorically here. Everything has a weakness. Everyone has a button installed that can fracture our lives and break our hearts. Usually it's the people you love the most that know where they live and how to push them because they are who installed it. Beth has had an amazing arc, and I literally felt sick when John pushed hers. This season is definitely a slow burn with too many tie ins, but damn, it feels good to FEEL SOMETHING ANYTHING, and the dinner scene between John and Beth accomplished it. Books open. Reread the first chapters, and I promise you that the cover will melt away.

People have to understand this ain't no Dallas.

Warning: Spoilers
Sure blame the writer , oh wait blame Travis , no wait blame Taylor Sheridan for poor writing for season 4 to be concluded in season 5 , seems people want shootouts and mayhem weekly , after episode one the show became a late night soap opera.

Now for the real picture in this episode , fine writing as usual , thank you Taylor Sheridan , each episode depicts the wholesome image how ranching is , families appear to be really fighting , talking crap about one another . Life in the country is just as hard as in the city .

Trusting and surviving and realizing that family can really be a major pain in the ass. Everyone serves a purpose including the wolf.

Kelly Reilly is a ticking bomb and yes the old man can't control her actions , they had two squabbles one for breakfast and then one for dinner, she is losing it.

Finn Little's charactor had a sudden change and appears to be human after all and he learns to ride a horse and take all the ranch hands money in 5 card stud.

Jefferson White to me deserves some kind of award , actually a Sag for best supporting actor in a limited tv series. His portrayal of Jimmy is amazing , from the beginning until now this guy's charactor seems to get it . Also he takes some great shots of history with his camera .

Ruby's Cafe from last week filmed in Missoula ,Mt , was set in Belgrade just outside Bozeman , so anybody from Missoula , don't be upset or confused.

Kevin Costner bumps into Will Patton , just could imagine during filming ,wow its been 33 years that they acted together in No Way Out.

Last of don't forget Luke Grimes is on the top of the hill for four days and four nights no food no water , maybe the Wolf may walk on by with a beer.

6.5 for the season-minus awaited finale.
ametallicaman198929 December 2021
I agree that this season is the weakest so far. Not the biggest fan of the storylines. I personally haven't found them all that interesting. Not going to give up on the show and hope its just a bump in the road and not whats to come.

Episode 409

Warning: Spoilers
The Jimmy stuff is somewhat interesting, but this was always a side character. He is getting way too much emphasis and I don't understand why. There's other characters I would prefer to see explored more.

Some stars added for the music
silverton-3795922 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's nice that there have been additions to the kind of songs added. Having a few lines from John Moreland's "Break My Heart Sweetly" mad me think that there is someone in the crew who knows music outside of that Blackberry Smoke kind of lightweight stuff. There was even a bit of Jason Isbell's best song, "Cover Me Up" a few episodes back. There is some talent hiding among the production crew, not not so much among the writers. The writing is pretty bad in this series.

Jimmy's story has at least included a few lines of humanity from Taylor Sheridan's character, Travis. Travis has been an unlikable character so far in the whole series, since he is such an arrogant, snotty braggart. He actually spoke a few kind words to Jimmy in this episode. That probably won't be repeated or Travis' character will have to be rewritten.

Good Acting Doesn't Make Up For Bad Writing
matthewreid-9565429 December 2021
The actors aren't the problem with this season. Strangely, it's become the writing. I don't know if Paramount and Taylor have driven their writers over to 1883 or what, but great acting can't make up for a horrible story. As soon as we head toward and intriguing storyline (something that has been absent from the second half of season 4), the show takes us in an odd direction chasing a rabbit. This season is like parenting at breakfast time. Your kids open 7 different cereal boxes never finishing one of them.

Too shallow, sadly like most of this season
Eismeerhunter11 January 2022
What happened to this season? Because nothing really happens. Nothing really drives any story forward. It's slow talking pseudo emotions, an infomercial for rodeos and spinoff shows and some random events.

I agree with others, the style is still there and it's still watchable... But the entire season just feels empty and lackluster.

So this series is just continuing to go downhill
Xavier_Stone27 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This first thing that I notice about this episode is that nobody sees that big John Dutton did anything wrong. A Sheriff is dead and it's all hunky dory, not even an admission of any wrong doing.

And a protestor is getting 15-20 years for assaulting 2 cops? Ok whatever.

The Jimmy 6666 ranch side story is becoming just a way of showing off fancy horse riding. The kid side story is becoming more and more bizarre. And of course the singing cowboy is always got a chip on his shoulder. This is mostly a daytime drama shown in the evening.

Finally Dutton realizes his daughter is an amoral
terrylarosa27 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Despicable, worthless creature. This terrible, tedious episode has, once again twirling horses, sad sack Jimmy, little drama, despicable Beth not caring about anybody except for 3 people ( what kind of people champion this character makes me shudder ) and cow hands playing cards. Big whoop. One of the worst lead ups to a finale. Gets one extra star to see Beth's face crestfallen and crying. Well deserved.

Wasted season
timw6628 December 2021
What a horrible season. The important parts and interesting plot stories could be summarized in about 5 episodes, not 9. What's going on here. Hey Tyler, Nobody wants to see you act and wants to see your dumb horse dances even less.

What has happened to Yellowstone?
davidhhope28 December 2021
Yellowstone has evolved into a Soap Opera with great scenery. There must be some new show coming along called 1883 (Facetious). I agree with a good many previous posts some step change has occurred in the writing or directing. This season is built on mysteries in which no effort has been made to resolve. On the upside. Jefferson White is doing a superb job growing his character. There are plots that go nowhere. That has nothing to do with the Actors, which are AMAZING!! The Actors can only do what the writers provide them. 1883 needs to fold up and so Taylor can focus on Yellowstone.

Okay, horses can spin around....
quockquock27 December 2021
Yeah, we get it. We've seen it in about 4 episodes this season, horses spinning around and stopping and starting etc... Then we have to listen to some bad acting and cowboy music. Oh yeah, John Dutton, can you clear your throat, that fake gravely voice is just so fake.

End of the line...
jamesll-282004 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Used to love this show but it's been on a slow spiral and this is the end of the line..

The story is so full of holes it just becomes farcical and all we are left with is beautiful landscapes and some good lines that are wasted on characters that have just become one dimensional.

If they didn't walk into the diner then maybe no one gets shot...it's not clever writing just looking for the big moment that always falls flat.

Why would Summer assault a police officer just because she is told to. What difference does it make anyway. Why throw out your daughter now, it's not the worst thing she has done.

Kayce is just left out in the wilderness at the end which seems apt.
