'Peter Pan and the Pirates' very quickly not only became one of my favourite animated shows but also one of my favourites ever. Of all the adaptations of 'Peter Pan', it's also my personal favourite.
All the characters are not only interesting but remarkably complex, especially Hook, even when not looking like Barrie's Hook all the character traits of the character are fully explored and expanded upon. The show is advantaged furthermore by good animation (with some exceptions here and there). Great music particularly the theme tune, one of the best of any animated 90s show. Remarkably good writing that had real maturity and a wide range of emotions rare in animated shows today. Gripping and imaginative stories that maintain the spirit of Barrie's source material while expanding on the themes, events and characterisation. And really excellent voice acting, for one of the most talented voice actors in the business and near-unequalled in villain roles Captain Hook contains some of the best work Tim Curry has ever done.
"Frau Brumhandel" to me is one of the show's best, certainly one of my favourites and something of a pretty special episode from any show. Anything centred around a music theme, especially classical/opera, is already on a greater level, and even more so when it is done so cleverly and intelligently.
So much so that that the animation was not always great (though it is also never bad, just that other episodes are better animated), particularly in some lack of drawing finesse, was easy to overlook especially when there are also far worse-looking episodes. Didn't notice anything distracting or ugly, and actually from personal view the animation was colourful and nicely detailed a vast majority of the time.
Especially good in "Frau Brumhandel" is the music. The theme tune is unforgettable and the incidental music is haunting, lively and lush in equal measure, but it was the pre-existing music with the likes of Bach, Wagner and Verdi that was the star. The pirates' song is also hilarious, especially in the lyrics.
Writing is as mature, intelligent and emotionally complex as one would expect while the story is never less than compelling.
Can't fault the regular characters, Hook shows why he's my favourite character and the pirates are great fun, their mutinous song being one of the episode's highlights. This is also an episode where Michael contributes to the story and is essential to how it concludes.
It's Frau Brumhandel herself that's particularly memorable, based on the character of Brunnhilde from Wagner's 'Ring Cycle' and the famous colloquialism/proverb "it ain't over until the fat lady sings" (an operatic stereotype and most of the time for opera singers today not a true one).
Voice acting is spot on, especially Tim Curry (anything that has him singing, always delightful, is immediately made better) and for Frau Brumhandel.
Overall, one of my favourites and one of the show's best and most special. 10/10 Bethany Cox
