Rich Man, Poor Woman
Left_back9 October 2016
This episode is a nod to the famous "Upstairs, Downstairs" English series about the upper crust and their servants. Moreso because Simon Williams, who played the son and heir in that series takes on the role of the butler in this remarkable episode.

The mystery of who committed the murder of the week is slowly revealed as Murdoch and his team uncover the clues. And in traditional fashion a model prop becomes the root of discussion about a possible future implement or game that we know today. Very clever.

Also the continuation of Murdoch's infatuation with Dr. Ogden comes to the fore as she turns up unexpectedly in the middle of the case, furthering the hopes of the audience in the impossible romance between them.

All the traditional Murdochian elements are here and we are not disappointed. Another murder and the reveal at the end in true Murdoch style as to motive and circumstance makes this show eminently watchable again and again without losing its charm.

Good riddance to Dr. Unpleasant.

Warning: Spoilers
I believe this is a nod to the TV series, Upstairs Downstairs. I never watched it but recognized the reference.

For me, the best part was Dr. Francis going away. That man was terrible to watch. All his scenes were cringeworthy. He was just an awful unpleasant character. And it's not just because Murdoch may or may not have treated him fairly since he arrived. He was brutal to everyone, including George. I couldn't figure out why Brackenreid can read everyone the riot act, but not his guy. Isn't Brackenreid his superior? Dr. Francis acted like he was Brackenreid's superior. Awful. I mean there were many times Brackenreid talked to Murdoch about showing respect to whomever. But not this guy? This guy showed a blatant lack of respect to everyone, especially Murdoch.

Why couldn't they bring in someone pleasant to be the coroner temporarily? What was the point of him and his awful scenes? Yes, I know Murdoch wanted Julia back, but my feeling was this guy was just a jerk from the onset. He should have been a murderer or the victim in one of the episodes. The only thing he seemed to care about was his wife. That could have been a story right there. Thankfully Julia is back. And no, I'm not completely happy with how she treated Murdoch. I mean she basically ghosted him when she left. And it took her like 5 minutes to become engaged to someone else. So is Darcy ok with never having any children? Remember that was her issue with Murdoch.

The murder mystery itself was decent. 9/10.

Rich man gets killed, Dr Ogden helps investigation
ctyankee12 April 2015
A rich man gets killed and Murdoch and Crabtree investigate. Dr Odgen shows up not long after. Her family are friends with the murdered man and and she happens to be in town. Dr Ogden is engaged to be married to Dr Darcy Garland, a doctor that works at the children's hospital in Buffalo and she wants to introduce him to her family that is why they are in Toronto.

Dr Garland it seems to want to make Dr Ogden happy and is agreeable and almost suggestive of her helping the investigation. Murdoch is still in love with her. In regard to the murdered man it is said he forced himself on the maids and they have been dismissed from their jobs because he made them pregnant.

There are lots of maids and hired help for the house. The mother and wife of the murdered man seem to ignore his bad behavior with women and come to his defense.

Dr Ogden is helping Murdoch in the morgue and Dr Francis the current coroner comes in and is very angry. It seems Dr Francis took this job to be in the town his wife came from to make her happy. He ends up quitting and Inspector Brackenreid is very angry. He has a fit and makes all kinds of faces and is yelling, the scene is very humorous. I find Brackenreid and Crabtree personalities add a lot of humor to this series especially Crabtree's analysis to what happens in certain murder cases with his big eyes wide open like he is having a Sherlock Holmes moment he announces his deductions.

Surprise ending in deed. Dr Ogden is going to stay in Toronto at the insistence of her potential husband.
