Body Art
boblipton30 January 2024
This short subject, which can be seen on Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film 1894-1941, is a collection of three dancers set to Shubert. We get images of body part, images from odd angles, images that have been optically printed to yield..... well, results.

It's always difficult to look at art films and figure out what they are supposed to mean, or even if they are just the results of the film makers trying something and seeing what the results are. Experimentation is necessary for the advancement of any art, but there is a tendency for some audiences to acclaim anything new as brilliant. I suppose the best I can do is to note that this did nothing for me, but might interest you.

Pretty weird....but mesmerizing.

This is from a collection of artsy shorts entitled "Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film 1894-1941". It's certainly NOT the sort of DVD set that the average person would want to watch.

The film is set to the music of Franz Schubert and is very strange. Much of it consists of disembodies arms and legs all moving about to the music. There are also folks in body suits moving rhythmically to the tune. Occasionally, there are shots of a guy in full color with multiple exposures--you'd have to see it to understand. The net effect is simply weird but the music is good and it's all a bit mesmerizing. The film is all in color--but rather faded.
