One of the most fun movies I've ever seen. I don't really know how to describe it, except it's completely brilliant and insane. Waxie Moon (played by a bald man in drag with a 70's porn-stache) is an outrageous film star, like Divine in John Water's movies but a much better actor. The movie begins with an obvious parody of "Sex and the City". Waxie Moon is like Carrie, except she's a famous stripper. She has three best friends: one is a sex addict who runs a brothel (Samantha anyone?), one is a workaholic (she's both a lawyer and a brain surgeon) who's always eating stuff like Miranda did on SATS and the fourth friend is an old fashioned girl whose life revolves around her abused ex-con boyfriend (and her name is Pollyanna). There's a hilarious musical number at their yoga class that doesn't make any sense but is maybe the best thing I've seen like EVER. The three friends encourage Waxie to online-date. Waxie finally agrees and joins a dating-social-networking site called "Buttface". Weeding through endless images of male genitalia, Waxie finds one promising ad by a very charming Native American architect. After just one romantic date with this man (who for some reason sings a beautiful apocalyptic song to her in a museum) Waxie gets engaged and they marry immediately. The two have a gorgeous church wedding and then without a warning the film's title appears and we realize that all that was just the intro. We now find Waxie Moon ten years later still grieving by her husband's grave. She has two kids by him (the boy is played by a girl). The style of the film also changes into something like 1950's soap opera. Waxie, who is a model for cat shampoo commercials, throws an anniversary party for her dead husband. The party is filled with judgmental types who disapprove of Waxie for being a single mother (even though she's a widow). The centerpiece of the party is Waxie's daughter performing a very age-inappropriate dance number. After that Waxie almost gets raped by her creepy neighbor and saved by a very good looking servant. The servant invites Waxie to his own party – a kind of artsy Bohemian gathering in the bad part of town. At the party Waxie is treated to a mind-blowing musical number performed by her own maid. The music and choreography in this film are better than what you find in regular movies, brings you back to classic Hollywood musicals. It's not long before Waxie falls in love with the servant/painter guy. Unfortunately, her neighbors ostracize her for dating below her class. To make matters worth, the man turns out to be gay. Waxie has a breathtaking monologue that's straight out of Shakespeare or Tennessee Williams – "her" acting is impeccable. After her breakup with the servant/painter, Waxie falls into deep depression until her daughter's tragic bear-trap accident jolts her back into living. While waiting to find out about her daughter at the hospital, Waxie meets a handsome doctor who turns out to be her late husband's war buddy. In a hilarious twist the doctor reveals that he's been looking for Waxie all along and that he promised his friend to take care of Waxie and her children. You'd think that this would be the happy ending. But instead the film gets crazier. On her way from the hospital Waxie is kidnapped by a gang of Satan worshippers, who are straight out of Mad Max films. The Satan himself appears (he's very well-endowed) and sings opera to Waxie in a foreign language, before being scared off by two buffoonish cops. The cops and the Satan- worshippers have a shootout and all the Satan-worshippers get shot. Waxie gets shot as well. Or so we think. I don't want to give away the ending. Seriously, if you like funny weird unusual films, see this movie. I saw it on my visit to Seattle – apparently it plays there every month like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". I hope it gets released on DVD soon. I'd love to add it to my WTF collection which includes "Forbidden Zone", "Eraserhead", "Lust in the Dust" and Jodorowsky films.
