Mockumentary time in the Australian outback
Leofwine_draca16 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
THE NULLARBOR NYMPH is a mockumentary shot in the Australian outback and featuring a pair of hapless water company employees as they find themselves stalked through the terrain by the titular figure, a mythical female creature with designs on them. This film goes for the comedy horror vibe with the emphasis on surreal and sometimes stupid comedy. It's lively enough and I do like the Aussie sense of humour, although things only really pick up for an elaborate climax. As ever, the picturesque Australian locations are an atmospheric character in themselves.

Unexpected surprise

Saw this movie at the film premiere in Ceduna which was a great night. For starters the film was nothing what I expected. I had seen the trailer and obviously it looked cheap, but for a film made for $25 000 it kept me well entertained with full on laughter.

Much of the humour in the film comes from the larger then life characters with the actual Nymph being used as more of a backdrop. She was a bit like the shark in Jaws with her scenes brief and relying more on the trapped characters to tell the story. The jokes in the film vary. Some of it is slap-stick, some gross-out and some is just plain sarcasm. There was even some very subtle jokes which I didn't pick up on until after leaving the show.

Surprisingly the people in the audience would have been between 40 to 60 years old and they loved it, even when it did push the boundaries. It also seemed to be more of a film for Women as they were clearly laughing the hardest as the male characters were being tormented.

I would say this film wouldn't be for everyone, but it was a great throw back to early 70's and 80's Australian genre films. I think the main thing to remember is that it was cheaply made but very entertaining as a result.

Bloody Cheap, but bloody good.

OK this isn't going to be like watching an epic Hollywood film - but for all the cheapness this actually works in a way.

The film maker seems to accept that the subject matter is basically laughable and here is an Australian mockumentry which goes back to the Ozploitation hey-days of the 70's.

I'd call this a beer and popcorn film and at the heart of it a great little cult Australian classic. (something which has been missing in recent years.) I laughed more in this than I would have watching some of the predictable comedies that come out of the States. Given it has basically no budget, minimal special effects and apparently a group of 'local' actors in it - You can't help but smirk a little in it's favor.

Wants Her Precious

Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with a found footage tape, or perhaps a spoof of a found footage tape (it is hard to tell). It moves into a documentary style as locals talk about the legendary Nullarbor Nymph with speculation ranging from made up story to space alien. And plot spoiler- you get no closure. Two water works individuals driving in this area spot the Nymph and have an accident, stranded in the middle of no where having to fight off a sometimes naked woman. That is pretty much it.

The film is not so much of a horror as it is a comedy. They spoil the funny scenes by playing serious music. Sometimes that works, but it didn't work that well in this hour long feature.

Guide: F-word, sex talk, M/F nudity
