Chaplin is one of the rare attempts in Bengali films which tries to portray the love relationship between a child and his father. Set in one of the dingy slums in Kolkata ,Bangshi Das makes his living by playing Chaplin at the birthday parties and other small occasions. What really stirs is the fact that father-son duo never allowed their poverty to come on the way of enjoying life to fullest.
Bangshi may be just a petty worker who imitates Chaplin but he and Nimua believes firmly he is an "artist" and like a renowned artists one-day he will also be popular amongst all the people. On the other hand, innocent Nimua harbors only one wish of celebrating his perfect birthday with lots of cake, balloons and above all his Chaplin father showing him the best tricks. It's amazing how both of them conceals their secret dreams and fights hard with the poverty with laughter and giggles. The famous secret mantra between the two "sum sum butu butu jinu mukura tumi keno gym koro butu koro na" clarifies the love and bonding between the two. Amidst all these smiles and tears, the opportunity to make it large come through Rina, the teacher at the NGO school where Nimua used to go. Rina was taken back the day when she entered their house to find father and son eating water-dipped bread in water and proclaiming it to be spicy mutton. The kind nature was stirred by the occasion and decided to help them overcome the poverty. Ultimately through Rina's help Banshi wins the wild card entry to a reality show for comedians and eventually wins it as well by his sheer talent.
The film takes an intense melodramatic turn in second half when Bangshi returns with sweets to celebrate his victory only to find his dear Nimua fighting with brain tumor. Doctor puts up his hand saying his expectancy is poor and should enjoy his remaining days to fullest. Bangshi perfect world was shattered in matter of seconds when he heard his better half is soon going to leave him alone. The way Bangshi skipped his maiden show to celebrate his son's birthday(probably the last) takes the audience by pleasant surprise. Bangshi wanted Nimua's wish to get fulfilled in grand style and he kept his words.
Probably the character of Chaplin was made only for Rudranil Ghosh and none could have done a better justification. Nimua played by Sohan Mitra is definitely the find for Bengali film industry; his fresh and matured acting at such an early age is surely going to win accolades in times to come. Mir, the popular Bengali VJ and host also breaks an ice in this movie with an impressive performance as friend of Bangshi. All the other characters like Rina(Rachita) Indra(Srijit) lives their finesse to build the ambiance around the central plot. The movie is studded with a couple of good classical songs which suits the flow of the plot.
The pathos of a father is repudiated in the tears behind the mask of smiling and giggling Chaplin. The beautiful chemistry between father and son is too strong even to evoke emotions out of the most practical fellow. "Artist Bangshi Das" was the real Chaplin in real life who fought the world with not anger and violence but with his giggles and silly tricks. The movie is a great tribute to great Charlie Chaplin as well to all the poor people who fight life day in day out with a smile in their face.
