Disclosure, I was involved tangentially, and regrettably, in this HBO misfire about the fun and honestly sexy annual film fest, You Oughta Be In Pictures, which has been running for years in Boston to packed houses. What started out as a short segment portraying the festival "proprietrix," her neighborhood business and the scores of people participating in these activities, shows up, I feel, misrepresented, almost mockingly, in producer/director Kaplan's expanded Porn 101. There's way too much padding here in what comes off as an attempt at unnecessary titillation at the expense of a an intriguing core story about an unusual woman practicing an outsider trade in a conventional business setting (the historic Arcade Building) with the long-standing support of a significant portion of the community. The positive, open celebration of erotic lifestyles is unfortunately treated here more as tired sexy sensationalism. Ultimately, the weakness of the program is heralded in the desperately salacious title.
