Brilliant.

OK so yes the show is meant to be about firefighters but each character has an individual storyline, this episode happened to follow Bobby and Athena's storyline. Brilliant episode with lots of twists and turns. I like how 9-1-1 is expanding to a much larger range of professions rather than just firefighters, brilliant work and I can't wait for the next episode. I like the fact it's gone back a couple of seasons to bring the storyline about Tanya back up. Another thing I found amazing was the fact that Joanne played a massive part in the disappearance of Tanya. The episode would be 10/10 if it had at least 10 minutes following the 118, other then that I loved it.

Pretty decent, but not my favorite

Really good Bathena content, which I always love.

I honestly was not as excited for this episode as other ones. Part of the reason I like 9-1-1 is it has a fantastic ensemble cast so while I get why they choose 2 or 3 characters to focus on in an episode sometimes, I feel like completely excluding the others is not the way to go. They could've easily given us a 5 minute or less scene of the trouble Buck, Eddie, Hen, and Chim are getting into in LA with Bobby away then have them leave for a routine call without really sacrificing much from the overall Florida plot.

With that, I also don't want this to turn into a police procedural. There's too many of those kinds of shows and 9-1-1's brand is wacky and insane emergencies so a garden variety murder mystery case, while interesting, is quite a tonal shift. I also didn't feel that they really did a great job of reinforcing that this is why Athena chose to become a cop, which is what the stated purpose was. I quite honestly don't really care that much about what it meant for Athena's parents. They're barely on the show.

Some of the guest actors' acting was quite weak and the first half of the episode kinda dragged imo.

But the Bathena scenes made up for it so it's okay I guess.

I did also appreciate a story about a missing little Black girl (happens far too often in this country) being written by Lyndsey Beaulieu, a strong, independent Black woman.

Decent enough conclusion to this saga, now let's get Bobby and Athena back to LA where they belong!

what an episode!

This episode was very good. The story telling was great, showing those flashbacks was great. Athena and Bobby are such great characters and a power couple. So great to see them teaming up and solving this case that have been mentioned many times, and Athena finally getting answers after a long long time is just amazing. Such a good written and well acted episode. Angela Bassett and Peter Krause are both great actors and play their characters so well. It's amazing to see them together, getting their well deserved spotlight. Three episodes in and loving this season so far. I can't wait to see what is in store for these characters this season!

A cinematic masterpiece.

Warning: Spoilers
To be honest everyone saying that this episode did not add anything to the plot clearly isn't paying attention. Trust me when I say it did, this dives deep into Athena's past and adds such suspense in the story that it gives you chills. The whole episode is a flashback and it really puts into perspective how Tanya's disappearance affected/affects Athena till this day. The songs. The scene of Tanya and junior running through the woods are truly gut wrenching and it truly captures the fear Tanya endured during the chase. The camera work is phenomenal. The way it can capture the old time-y look truly adds dimensions to the story. The way Athena can't be sure if her dad did it means that she was really trying to solve the case. And to everyone saying the acting sucked is truly blind. This episode is gut wrenching and leaves you with chills as you get immersed into the story. This has to be one of my absolute favorite episodes as it hits you right in the feels. The writers did an amazing job with this. And if you don't like it you just can't see the view point.

Ignore the low ratings - this is PHENOMENAL
ambjaneth10 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
If you're a fan of true crime, this episode (and the end of episode 2) are for you! It's shocking, scary, sad, suspenseful, and heartbreaking.

Athena makes it her mission to find out what happened to little girl who went missing all those years ago - Tanya - whose bones were found under her parents' deck /sunroom floor.

The flashbacks have Tanya as a little kid (10? 12?) who wanted to sneak out and party with her older sister. She ends up at some party in the middle of nowhere, drinking with her sister and sister's friends. And this is the last time she is seen.

What happens is truly evil and it's so scary to watch this little girl run away from a 17 year old pedo, running for her life, knowing she won't make it. Terrifying.

It's an emotional episode. I certainly cried. But Athena caught the bad guy - her own childhood friend - and he's put away.

I'm not sure if people gave this a low rating because it's copaganda (in which case.. why are you watching 911!?!), if it's because it only had Bobby & Athena out of the main case, or if they don't care for true crime.

But I enjoyed it. And I recommend watching this.

Difficult to rate-impactful, well done episode of tv, but not a 911 episode
CeeCeeLove215 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Angela and everyone delivered strong performances, in a well-written episode, with stunning cinematography, gut wrenching reveals, and an important, impactful storyline handled with grace and care by a black writer focused on the way these events affected all the people involved. There's only one problem. This isn't Law and Order SVU. Or Criminal Minds. Or Cold Case.

If I wanted to watch a show about the grooming, assult, and murder of women and children (a trigger/content warning would have been nice) I easily have a dozen other shows to choose from. 911 is and always has been a show about first responders showing up at the time an emergency/accident whatever is happening and helping the people involved. This was not that. I'm not used to 911 episodes leaving me feeling sick. The only other episodes to do that were the ones involving the Jeffrey storyline, ALSO about sexual assault which we just did so I don't see the need to rehash the same thing with Athena again (though if I had to pick, the impact of this story is more important, and also easy to skip if needed since again, it's entirely a self-contained episode).

I've seen people trying to make the argument that this is just like other "begins" episodes for 911 or like "Boston" however all of those episodes focused on the characters either choosing the job and settling in, or how they got the idea for the job, interspersed with present day emergencies. As for "Boston", had JLH not been on maternity leave, they would have split the scenes into other episodes leading up to her and Chim meeting again, but even with how it was done, we still saw multiple emergency calls Chim went on, and him and Maddie meet up because she's helping someone in active distress. The only outlier? Athena Begins.

An episode can be a well constructed and performed episode of television, but if it completely sidelines the premise and/or other characters of the ensemble show it's not going to be a good episode *of that show*. I would much rather have seen Bobby and Athena have to help on an active emergency on their honeymoon, or had this episode with less graphic flashbacks of what happened and interspersed with othet things.

The performances, writing, and directing all deserve praise, but Kristen needs to just go work on a police investigation procedural instead of trying to turn this show about first responders into something it's not, and never has been. I love Athena, and Angela Bassett is incomparable but my favorite moments of her around her work on this show are when she's helping people in need on a call and I wish we would get to see more of that. There's a reason she's a sargent and not a detective, because she wanted to be out there helping in a moment of crisis, not only showing up after they find a body and its too late to help.

This is one of the few episodes of 911 I will never be watching again, which is an easy choice since it wasn't a 911 episode.

Must have watched the wrong show since I thought 9-1-1 was about firefighters

Warning: Spoilers
They tried it last year with Harry's kidnapping and failed, but they needed to confirm it 100%

As much as the story could have been interesting, at least in season 5 we got to see the rest of the team and Harry was a character we cared about. But I have absolutely no interest on knowing aboy a murder that has nothing to do with the main cast, in a different city and that's probably going to be forgotten as soon as Athena and Bobby get back to LA. Given that Kristen's favourite hobby, as runner-up of destroying one of the best shows on TV, is to have things happen off screen.

I wish I was disappointed, but this is something I totally expect as long as that woman keeps the reigns of this show.

As much as we all love Angela and Athena, we don't watch this show for the copaganda. It's time some lets the writing team know.

Did Anyone Really Need This Episode?
JMadems4 October 2022
No! So because AB was gone filming her Panther role - when she gets back we see her and her characters history for 42 minutes- not even a flash of the other show characters.

Sorry but that doesn't work with an ensemble show. We don't need a Copagenda for a full episode. Even PK was treated like a standby used only when she needed saving or hugs.

So far this season is a disappointment following in the poor tradition from S5. Tim and Ryan - the show brains(?) when are you going to step in and fix this mess. Don't you want to get to more seasons? How long will Fox pay for this stuff? I know ratings go down in later seasons but with this cast and previous successful writers and directors it wouldn't have to happen.

Almost Unwatchable
dpruett-386757 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The acting is cheesy. The writing is lazy. So far this season has sucked. The stories have always been over the top and that's expected but good lord season 6 is off to a horrible start.

They gave away who the killer was at the end of the previous episode and confirmed it within the first 10 minutes of this one.

And honestly can we talk about how unrealistic the Athena and Bobby marriage is? Those two have no chemistry whatsoever. I plan to give this show another few episodes but network TV shows have become boring. They seem to just hire writers out of a creative writing weekend retreat. Snooooooze!
