Grandpa's Monster Movies (1990)

*** (out of 4)

Grandpa (Al Lewis) hosts this 64-minute feature, which is pretty much just a showcase for the Universal horror movies of the 30s and 40s. Lewis adds a few comments here and there but the running time is devoted to these theatrical trailers:

HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, HOUSE OF Dracula, SON OF Dracula, Dracula'S Daughter, Dracula, THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS, THE INVISIBLE WOMAN, THE INVISIBLE AGENT, THE INVISIBLE RAY, FRANKENSTEIN, FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN, ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, THE CLIMAX, WEREWOLF OF London, MYSTERY OF MARIE ROGET, MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, FLESH AND FANTASY, THE WOLF MAN, THE MUMMY, THE MUMMY'S HAND, THE MUMMY'S CURSE, THE BLACK CAT (1941), THE CAT CREEPS, BLACK Friday and finally HORROR ISLAND

I was ten years old when I first watched this thing and I still remember finding a VHS copy in Kroger's of all places. At the time this thing was released it was amazing to me and I watched it weekly because so many of the films weren't available at the time so the only way to see any of the scenes was by watching this thing. Considering that most of these films are available today, this is mainly going to appeal to those who enjoy watching trailer compilations. For the most part this remains a fun little film but there's still no question that some of the one-liners are really bad. The only one that really works is when Lewis says FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN must have been the original odd couple.
