Dragons in Second Flight
hellraiser720 October 2022
This is another of my personal favorite video games of all time as well as favorite shooters. This game is of course a sequel to "Dragon Spirt" which is also a favorite of mine and personally I really love this sequel despite the fact this game wasn't as big a hit as the first but as time went on it's became a sleeper cult gem.

I really love the plotline, one of the best things about this game is in it's setting. Instead of the typical medieval past, which is the usual one for the Fantasy genre, it's the post-apocalyptic future. Personally, I think it's an awesome idea and it's a setting I don't see often in the fantasy genre except for the animated film "Wizards" and TV shows like "Thundarr the Barbarian" and "Visionaries". I feel fantasy mixed with the post-apocalyptic subgenre is a beautiful combination because it gives the genres creative freedom to build a broader world without certain restriction for both genres. I really like this world made in the game where we do see creatures from mystic and myth but also creatures that were created by science.

In this game you a warrior prince along with your warrior princess wife (girlfriend or friend whichever you prefer, your both together) see this post-apocalyptic world is in more danger than ever as the forces of darkness using both the powers of mysticism and science are about to make mankind extinct. Now the warrior prince and princess both must take up the ancient sword passed down and transform themselves into dragons to be mankind's protectors once more and last hope.

Yeah, cool story but of course like with all shooters were all in this for the shooting action. You have your basic controls and even the gameplay is pretty much the same as it is in the first game but with a few differences and improvements. For one thing you can play the game two players where in the first game it was mainly a solo campaign.

You have different kinds of weapons like fire rings and blue fire lasers, and as you gather more power globes the power in the weapon increases along with your charged shot. That is the other thing about the game is that you have a charged shot function which at the time wasn't all the common in shooters except in games like "R-Type" (game I reviewed) But the charge function is different because instead of holding the fire button down long enough for the gauge to reach full, you let go of the fire button as the charging goes on automatic. This gives the game a bit of a strategy as you can discharge a powerful blast, but it also means that you have to drop your offense and defense blasting. It's a factor of timing but also risk and pay off, you must pick your shots carefully, hit them with them at the right times and places.

The game is still on the hard side but it's manageable and fair like with most shooters, you can get past the level, but it takes time and perseverance to get though, as the old principle goes you can't expect to get it right the first time.

The graphical presentation is great as it's kind of the same graphics but there are slight improvements in the animation making it up to date with the 90's. Really love the character designs from both dragons to the enemies and bosses that you can say really steal the show. I like that it consists of a beautiful mix of some of the creatures from fantasy but also mutants you'd see from sci-fi. The mutant creatures are bizarre but also cool looking at the same time. I don't want to give too much away as the kind of monsters you have to see to believe. From sub enemies like these worm creatures that were obviously inspired by the sand worms from the 80's "Dune" film though also looks like the "Graboids" which is ironic as the film "Tremors" came out the same year as this game. Bosses like some weird tentacle eyed brain octopus. Another which looks like another creature for one of the paintings of artist H. G. Gigger as it's this strange organic and metallic fusion combo of a centipede and spider.

And of course, one of the most important elements in a shooter is music which is great, this game has plenty of memorable track that made it on my personal favorite list as each of them just sing out dragon fantasy shooting action.

"Dragon Saber" soar high and makes the cut.
