When the US, Canada and Mexico first signed the North America Free Trade Agreement in the 1990's, hopes were high for all three countries. What actually happened was that many reasonably well paid jobs in the US were moved to Mexico where wages were far lower and labor unions were simply not possible. This led to migrations of desperation; Mexican and Latin American workers seeking a better life in what seemed the land of promise, the United States. The USA quickly stopped the flow of migrants near larger urban centers. As a result over 5,000 vulnerable migrants suffered abuse at the hand of "coyotes" (ostensibly migrant guides), starvation, thirst and exposure, lost in the remote Arizona desert where they were left to die.
"The Second Cooler" is the documentary about desperate migrants, for whom the NAFTA dream was to become a very personal nightmare.
