A masterpiece in storytelling.
sherjan-aamir27 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has two halves, the first one sets up a neat detective story and the interesting world it's featured in while the second one is a more personal tale of 2 "people" who get affected by that world.

The first half was good, it's engaging, the lead detective is interesting enough to pull me in for the long haul and the mystery surrounding his past is intriguing.

It's the second half of the episode that elevated it to great heights. I did not expect to be so invested in North No. 2 and his time with Mr. Duncan. Their friendship and growth was so perfectly executed. Each interaction removing a layer of Mr. Duncan's emotional barrier to allow him to trust his "machine" more. I was so deeply invested that I had forgotten about the larger plot at hand so when the clouds came, my heart sank. Knowing what was about to happen.

"Come home, my boy. You'll be late for your Piano lesson"

Wow, just wow....

There are no words that can express what I am feeling right now.. I did not expect this art.. I did not expect this narrative depth.. I did not expect this philosophy.. this writing.. this masterpiece.. I am literally shocked.. I did not cry or be affected by an anime episode in a long time. I've been watching an anime like this for a long time... Yes... This is what I was waiting for... This anime... It's a masterpiece... A mixture of feelings, memories, and the philosophy of destiny... Mystery, dialogues, and creative visual production. Everything was made in a perfect way.. There's a lot of talk in my heart, it's only for the first episode.. and I can sum it all up in one word.. 10/10..

I'm so happy that the studio nailed this adaptation

Warning: Spoilers
I watched the first episode and I'm delighted so far. What a great adaptation! I've finally lived to see the day when I hear Duncan's composition. It was a powerful scene in the manga, but actually being able to listen the music that he created made it even better. That was the most important part of the first episode and I'm glad that they nailed it.

As for everything else - it's just as superb. Animation, coloring, soundtrack, story - everything is top notch. It's a shame that this series is not so well known right now. I hope that Pluto will receive the same treatment as Monster (another work by Naoki Urasawa) as the years pass by - not so popular on the initial release, but a cult classic in the future. This anime definitely deserves it.

North No.2, it's time for our piano practice 💔

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 1 of Pluto hits you like a train right away. It first introduces you to the world and the heavy death of Mont Blanc, a robot who impacted his people and community tremendously. A very interesting investigation arises as it's told that a human was the one who could've possibly caused the deaths, but at this moment it's unsure. But as intriguing as the first act was, the second half of this episode was heart crushing.

I don't want to get into it much because I feel that the episode and the moments speak for themselves, but watching Duncan grow an attachment to a robot after being so against them due to his own beliefs and a lack of acceptance towards them was beautiful to watch. It's heartbreaking that in the final moments, after North No. 2 goes to find out the meaning behind the humming and he finally grows a bond with his teacher, it's ripped away by the likely villian who potentially caused the death of Mont Blonc.

Right when Duncan finished his song, he couldn't play the full version for North No. 2. That moment was stripped away. And watching Duncan look up at the sky as the humming was heard from above was heartbreakingly beautiful. This episode reminds me of the No Game No Life 0 movie in similar ways that I won't explain, but to see this episode create such an impact in around the 20-30 minute timeframe was excellent. I was on the verge of tears in episode 1, so I'm very excited, yet nervous to see what's to come for the next 7 episodes.

I was crying by the end..

This episode was beyond anything I had imagined when I started watching! First half sets up the premise, story and tone while the second half turns into a powerfull emotional rollercoaster that will forever stay printed in my mind as a memory!

I love the atmosphere of the show as well as the story and premise! A robot detective trying to solve a murder mystery in a world where some see robots as machines and others as something living, really hooked me!

However the star of the episode is the story and character of Duncan! His background and character combined with his philosophy and that amazing piece of pianomusic, truely makes for a heartbreaking experience of incredible storytelling! Everytime you hear the piano, it gets a new and deeper meaning! I was honestly shocked at how moving it was! Some of the best character work i have seen in one episode!

This shows that the difference between humans and machines might not be so big!

Beautiful

No words, genuinely no words. This is quite possible one of the best first episodes of all time.

I know a lot about Naoki Urasawa but haven't got round to reading any of his works yet. I have however, watched all of the Monster anime, which is the best anime of all time (my opinion). So when I saw that the anime of 'Pluto' had released and it has his name written on it of course I felt obliged to watching it. But bloody hell I was not expecting it to be this masterful.

The first half has a great introduction to our main character, and sets the mood of what's to come. But then the second half completely changes as it tells the story of a grumpy bitter old renowned piano composer and his butler, North No. 2. After watching heaps and heaps of anime I can say that the writing for these two characters are phenomenal and found myself in awe at the creativeness and the level of detail in which (presuming) Urasawa was writing in.

Please give the first episode a watch. I haven't seen the other episodes yet but if they continue to be at this level then this may be better than monster. Thank you for reading my review, I hope all of you will enjoy episode 1 of Naoki Urasawa's 'Pluto' as much as I did.

It was...

The episode is full of emotions. Robot content was never my type, but I decided to give this anime a chance, just because the writer is Naoki Urasawa. I am not rating this episode because of him, but because of the strength of the storyline, the mystery of the events, the characters... everything was... I can't find suitable words... I loved Astroboy since I was a kid.. but I never expected that you could turn a story for kids into a masterpiece with these events. Thanks again to the writer for this art. Even though I've only seen the first ep I don't expect less than this in the next episodes.

This is an amazing first episode. The concept and scope was nailed. It feels like a love death and robots episode that makes you think. Think about life and how we perceive humans. The animation is on another level and helps bring life to the story be portrayed. You feel like you're in the house with these characters. The direction the show is heading makes you want to stay and find out. I'm hooked and can see this being one of my highest rated shows. Hopefully netflix will continue to bring this type of energy into their anime's. I really believe this will become a classic just off this first episode.
