This documentary touches on some of the most profound experiences and relationships of Diaspora Jewry to Israel and Israeli society. While it highlights rich religious and cultural diversity among the recent Olim (individuals who have moved to live in Israel) and how those differences impact their relationship to the country and culture, both in forms of opportunities and obstacles, it more accurately draws a conclusion that there is something greater that binds Jews of the world. The hardships and complexity of transitions and motivations to live somewhere new takes a backseat in this documentary to the prominent theme that Israel is central to the Jewish experience and that a relationship with Israel, however complicated or difficult at times for some, unlocks a potential of Jewish identity that can only be fully actualized once an "outsider" becomes an "insider".

In the realm of Israeli cultural discussion in film, From the Diaspora is truly a breath of fresh air. The film is a pure, honest portrayal of the emotional, spiritual, and physical journeys taken by those leaving their home countries in order to settle permanently in the state of Israel. The film portrays what it means to compromise friendships, family, and a career path in order to achieve the goal of connecting to a shared homeland. From the Diaspora depicts the good with the bad, but most importantly it leaves the final interpretation up to the viewer by showing the various aspects of immigration to Israel through its diverse selection of interviewees from across the globe.
A must watch for anyone interested in learning about the Aliyah (immigration to Israel) experience.
