more character development but backstory missing
PFNikolai4 December 2023
Two years later yet we continue to see character development. Bass has a new posse man who he seems to be able to rely on yet we are left confused by the missing backstory which happened during those two years. While the production leadership's apparent desire to be historically accurate is admirable, perhaps trying to cover so many years in so few episodes creates more problems than it is worth. We are still wondering how tensions between Bass and several other characters will be resolved. Some of the characters and relationships did not seem to change much in spite of the passage of two years.

What?

What is going on in this episode? We are lost. So many questions and something is missing. I'm trying to not include spoilers. This episode introduced many new faces with zero understanding of who they were or their past or current relationship with Bass. The natives he is speaking to while sitting on horses is completely confusing. I do not know what the history with those people. I do not know why he is speaking to them. It seems there was something implied. I wonder if they are allowing Bass to pass through their lands or Bass purchases goods from them. I believe this is poor writing. I felt like I'd missed an episode. Sad.

Warning: Spoilers
There was some action in this one, there was even a hint of romance, but some of the storytelling still seems to miss the mark. The supporting cast does not have the same charm or recognition that you had on some of the other Paramount+ originals like 1883 or 1923, and you don't seem to have much to look forward to in their growth with this only being an 8 episode show.

It is still easy to follow, you have clear good guys and bad guys, and it definitely captures the Western vibe. A solid episode, but still this show has not quite managed to hook me in at all and think it deserves award recognition.
