Best of season 16 yet
loganfettt23 June 2023
This episode really brought a return to the greatness of the sunny glory days, I've been feeling like sunny has been running on fumes and producing good episodes but not great like they're known for, but this episode was so much different then what modern sunny has been like.

We got some great callbacks to the Dennis (sinned) system and to mac finds his pride, which both hit very hard.

Season 16 has been pretty good so far and I really hope the rest of this season is as good as this episode was. I have high hopes for the next episode as it's the one that feature Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston, I really hope they don't blow the opportunity that their given to work with two amazing actors.

Couldn't Stop Laughing

Warning: Spoilers
Oh my god, this episode was so damn funny. Easily the best of Season 16 so far. Once I saw Megan Ganz was credited as a writer I knew this one was gonna be great.

This is one of Dennis' best episodes in a WHILE. Glenn Howerton's delivery was side-splitting in so many scenes!! His plot with Mac and Dee was so well done, from the SINNED system to the dates to his manipulation of Mac. It felt like the main plot of the episode and was absolutely brilliant. This one overall just had so many funny scenes. It utilized Uncle Jack so well and when his "ice cream truck" pulled up I doubled over in laughter. This episode is well written and ties its plots together in a way that's impossible NOT to love. Easy 9/10, almost a 10.

"KILL THE WIFI, KILL THE WIFI"
FriedToast0222 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is the first review I have written for the season, but wow we are halfway done already and I hate it. Even 2 more episodes would be fine, but 8 is just not enough. It also sucks that this season has been the best I would say since since season 12. This episode might be my favorite episode, since 'Times up for the Gang'. There has not been a weak episode all season. It seems the like the crew of IASIP is taking the criticisms of the last couple of seasons, like the side characters missing, as well as focusing too hard on the issues happening around the world.

This episode was great both plot lines were really good. The main one with Frank, Charlie, and Uncle Jack is hilarious. This plot has Frank competing in a chess competition with a Russian grand master. Just having uncle Jack in because they are borrowing his spy stuff is hilarious to me. I just love uncle Jack so anytime he is in an episode, it's a win. The joke with the ice cream truck was random, but hilarious "There's no ice cream", I knew exactly where it was going, but made me laugh so hard. The other Uncle Jack joke with him asking to get a picture of the kid Frank was versing was also great. Charlies line delivery of "What am I suppose to drink whine or something" is great. Whenever they have conversations with normal people it's great. I'm just surprised Charlie gave it up so fast. Charlies mom was also in the episode not for very long, but made her presence known, "Charlie and Frank are gonna play spies" and the binoculars she made with her hands is top tier. Also love the call backs to previous episodes like in the very beginning with 'Mac Finds his Pride'. In the very beginning frank says he's not homophobic any more since Macs dance, and then instantly takes it back when Mac brings up anal beads, as well as good foreshadowing to the end of the episode. We also got another surprise shoutout to another episode 'The Dennis System' one of my favorite episodes of the whole show. In the B plot Dennis "helps" Mac and Dee find boyfriends. It sounds like nothing special, but it was hilarious. The decision to do a Dennis System for getting a dude was hilarious and also choosing to call it Sinned, Dennis spelled backwards was simple but great writing that I didn't catch onto until they revealed it. Mac and Dee's faces were hilarious in that scene a lot like mine. The scene with Dennis going over each letter and then cutting to dee and mac in the restaurant using the tactics was hilarious. As well as Kaitlyn Olsons line delivery of "Grabbing your ding dong" with food in her mouth, is just too good.

The ending is also hilarious with going back to the cold open and now knowing they roofied Frank and stuck an anal bead up his cheeks is messed up and so funny and Dennis face in that montage of him messing with Frank and then the phone breaking. It was actually insane the gang took a dub with Frank actually beating the Russian grandmaster, all thanks to the anal bead 💀. I love the ending shot of Charlie celebrating with Frank and him yelling "Kill the WiFi, it was quite quiet and almost missed it but it made me laugh so hard. Also I think they called back to 'Charlie Goes America all over everybody's a**' with him wearing the same bandana a good subtle one not everyone will catch. I really liked what they did with Dennis in this episode, he wasn't just psycho for no reason, the entire gang were asking help for Dennis and he was loosing it. So his anal bead ploy at the end makes sense and the finale of this season 'Dennis takes a Mental Health Day' will be more satisfying since the gang have actually been quite reliant on him as of late. A great episode honestly my only gripe is quite small but it seemed like they were gonna do a plot of Charlie and frank sneaking in beer but then nothing ever happens. It could have just been a throwaway joke, but it seemed like they were gonna do more with it. This ep I want to give a 10, but I won't for now, since I've only seen it once. One of the best of the season so far.

*Edit (7/6/23)- after multiple viewings and watching the last couple of episodes. So far this is my favorite episode of the season and the best episode imo since "Times Up for the Gang"

Best episode in years..
mcconnachiekieran25 June 2023
I'm and avid sunny fan, and have been for a good couple years now. I have still enjoyed watching the newer seasons, and enjoyed 15 more than most did, though I still agree something felt off, from the characters, to being away from the bar for so long, even though I thought the Ireland setting had a certain charm, this is much closer to what I pertain as 'classic sunny' This episode really reminds me of my Favs of all time like the gas crisis and wrestles for the troops, so glad they're hitting their stride again. This was 100% my favourite episode of the season, and (after I rewatch it a bunch) a great contender for one of the best of the shop in my opinion, Ican't wait to see the rest of the season.

I also loved the callbacks to being frank, mac finds his pride, Charlie's American pride outfit, just great all round.

Amazing episode all the way through!

Warning: Spoilers
My absolute favorite of the season so far, from the return of the D. E. N. N. I. S system but for men, to the whole Frank chess tournament storyline and Mac and Dee's dating lives, it was so much fun.

The plotwist of Dennis being Jhonny was so well executed that I didn't see it coming, it felt too surreal to actually be true, and Mac's complete denial about every aspect of his life this season in particular, makes me remember season 8 Mac.

It was lighthearted but at the same time, filled with subtext that I hope can be explored further in the following episodes of the season. (I also hope that the jokes about Dennis's implied bisexuality continue in the series, because it's a throwback to Mac's jokes pre-season 12 and those were the funniest)

All in all, great episode with great acting, dialogue and writing.

A Quintessential Sunny Episode
samnestro22 June 2023
Some of the best It's Always Sunny eps have elaborate setups with solid callbacks and punchlines. "Frank vs Russia" is a strong reassurance that the guys at Sunny still got it.

Normally, in an It's Always Sunny episode, some of the jokes don't quite land but they barely register because the next scene is speeding into something more exciting. Here it all lands:

  • Dennis' megalomania and strange predatory nature
  • Mac and Dee's insanely horny behaviour
  • DeVito's brilliant physical performance as Frank
  • Charlie is well doing Charlie and that's cool too!

Long story short, modern It's Always Sunny is still fantastic. There were fears that some of the more confined episodes from S15 might be an indicator that the show has lost its edge. NOPE, it was just Covid compromise. In 2023 CE, everything's a'okay!

This was so wrong... In the Sunny way
jonasarjunior27 June 2023
This one had so many callbacks. Dennis showed his creepiness so well. The two plotlines seemed disconnected, but connected completely by rhe end. This really felt like old-times IASIP as I hadn't felt foe a long time. The actors were also more energetic like they used to be up to season 12. Also, the music is back. I don't know who was responsible for the music in the first 3 episodes but its timing was so off. The episodes felt silent without the typical music instead of the laugh track. It really made me feel super uncomfortable as this show used to cause me to be in the past. Super cringe worthy.

Kachow!

A perfect Sunny episode. First, let's review the scenes that made me laugh; The funniest scene I think was the scene where Frank was playing against a kid with charlie standing next to himi openly talking to his talkie and buzzer in his pocket buzzing loud as hell and they do absolutely nothing to cover things up. It reminded me of another scene I really liked where Charlie was in Mac and Dennis's house and he was talking with Frank on his talkie and he would say stuff like "roger that" and Frank's voice was so loud you were kinda able to hear him through Charlie's earphones. That was hilarious to me and that chess scene felt like an improved version of that, not trying to cover up a plan that should've been secret.

I also liked that they can joke about gay people again, mac's plot was good in this episode it didn't feel weird but I do think, just like in the first episode of the season, they make mac look extra stupid for some reason, he wasn't always like that idk why they changed him so much he almost feels like a different character at this point.

Something I didn't like much was the SINNED scene, it was pretty funny but I think it was kinda unrelated to the whole episode and they gave it a little too much time. Instead of that scene we could've watch how they drugged Frank and did the operation.

So other than couple of small details, episode was fire. A must-watch!

Great Final Joke
sktraut11 December 2023
This is a pretty great episode as far as performances go. It wouldn't have been as funny if Frank and Dennis weren't played so convincingly. This just proves to me how, by this point, these actors understand these characters so well that they still seem like actual people despite the crazier and crazier things they decide to do. This episode is all buildup to a joke that got belly laughs out of me for a solid 5 minutes. This season definitely shook it up a little. Not that the show was getting stale, but it's impressive to see them kinda regain some steam. The characters have always been funny, but the recent seasons have usually been missing the zany story ideas that always made Sunny so memorable. This season it's back in full force and this episode is a great example.

Episode 1604
bobcobb30124 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There are still parts of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia that make you laugh, but this just felt very thrown together and did not make a lot of sense. There was no reason for Frank to enter this tournament, and the idea of cheating by beeping him through an entire game is absolutely too unrealistic.

Episodes like this cater to the fanbase of the show that lives on the vulgar nonsense and does not really give us any kind of memorable content.

I look forward to watching the show each and every week, but this feels like the kind of bad episodes we got four seasons ago and not groundbreaking comedy.

This is not how Chess works.
hurdrandy26 July 2023
As a chess player, this whole thing was sloppy an unrealistic. I love every episode... Ever, except this one. The truth is Chess cheating could never ever work like that at all, you can't pick up the pieces and move them around, then change your mind, etc... Black does not move first... etc... A "big game" against the "Russians" wouldn't happen in a little place like that. The whole thing was basically bad writing... well very lazy and predictable and unrealistic

I really love every other episode though, and it makes me wonder what the heck happened with this individual episode. So much of it is just bad.
