In Which Pete the Pup is assisted by Al St. John
boblipton23 February 2014
Doris Deane wants to marry Al St. John rather than the boy her father wants her to wed. It's a standard plot of the era and Sennett would still be using it when he closed down his studio a decade later, so we'll ignore the foolishness of anyone who wants to marry Al, because most of the movie is about Al's conflict with Pete the Pup, who starts out attacking Al, but reconciles with him for some butcher's scrap and an egg filled with dynamite.

If you are familiar with Pete, it is probably from his work late in his career with the Little Rascals. That's where I first encountered him. Earlier, he had appeared in the Buster Brown series directed by Charles Lamont, in which he stole the show. Here, in his third picture, Pete is clearly having a great time running around and biting the other players on the behind.

As for Al, he takes two or three very nice comedy falls, including one through a wall and rides a very small bicycle -- before he got into the movies at the behest of his uncle, Roscoe Arbuckle, Al's stage act was as a trick cyclist. Roscoe co-directed this anonymously and you can see it in the way he showcases his nephews abilities and keeps Pete enthusiastic.

It might not be high-brow entertainment, but I found myself laughing out loud many times!

"Dynamite Doggie" is a very funny Tuxedo Comedy which was co-directed anonymously by Fatty Arbuckle. This is because the film was made just after Arbuckle's infamous rape trials and the various studios felt his name was box office poison.

The short comedy stars Arbuckle's nephew, Al St. John, a very capable comedian who became much more famous as a B-movie cowboy sidekick in the 1930s.

It seems that Al and a young lady are in love. However, her father and her dog, Pete, hate Al and the father insists she marry the man he picked out for her. Much of this film is mindless fun, as Pete attacks poor Al again and again. Now here is where the plot goes absolutely nutty. Al finds a bomb that looks like an egg and he feeds it to Pete. While this might sound really cruel, Pete is an awful dog....that is until Al feeds him. Now Pete and Al are inseparable and no matter how hard Al tries, the boobytrapped dog keeps following him.

Overall, while the plot is a bit disjoint and weird, the film has many wonderful sight gags. And, most importantly it's very funny.

By the way, for all you doggy lovers out there....don't worry, Pete will be just fine by the end of the picture!!
