Here's a short subject produced by Ealing Studios for the War Office. It recounts, as you might expect from the title, the purpose and routines on one of the little artificial islands in the Channel and North Seas that the British built as a line of defense.
The fact that is most interesting to me is that while boats carry rations to the sea fort, the fresh water is supplied from artesian wells, pumped from beneath the sea floor. for the rest, it is dull routine, means for the men to keep in shape, and the deadly danger, both from the position of the sea fort, and the fact that HE shells are stored on the spot.
After the War, these sea forts were abandoned. Because they lie outside territorial waters, they were taken over by people for pirate radio radio stations.
