The nice big brother

Finally, an episode to get it back on the right track. Skye finally made an impression on me, it was great seeing Coulson in action and it included a very possible recurring villain.

First let's start with Skye. I really wasn't a fan of her at all in the first two episodes. However, now that she actually seems dedicated to joining Shield, she actually is opening up and allowing me to like her more as she is more than just the tag along rookie, as she said in episode two.

Ward opening up to Skye is also good development as well. His background with his family can be a great avenue to venture down to get a handle on who his character and motivations.

Getting Coulson back out in the field was cool too. Seeing that he is rusty from Tahiti is appropriate and his chat with Hall was powerful as well as they were talking about how dangerous certain things in this world are. The decision Coulson made at the end to stop Dr Hall was shocking too as I saw that Coulson knows that saving the day doesn't mean saving everyone.

Quinn was interesting as a villain. Being a rich, smug genius puts him in some nice company but the fact that his morals aren't really there and the fact that he will go against Shield is good too. His resources can affect what is going to happen to them in the season and hopefully it will get better than this episode.

What bothered me about this show so far is that they keep namedropping and referencing the MCU. I understand that you are in this universe and it is perfectly fine making these references just not every other minute.

+ Skye is getting better + Coulson in action + Quinn could be dangerous - Too. Many. MCU. References

How to make a Super Villain Part I
XweAponX11 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
You squish him like a bug in some gravity-bending element. I thought there were 118 elements, this one is 123... Or was that 128? Can't remember. Gravibloatium. I'll have to read all of my Marvel Comics and review all of the "new elements" they have made up over the years, they have plenty.

As far as the Fringeness of this episode, it starts out like "Welcome to Westfield" and we have some SUVs and Semi's being flung about like so much particle-board. And a Truck Driver who has a great HUD on his wind- "Shield".

No Fishtank on the side of the plane that got blown up last time, too bad.

We got here Ward as Skye's S.O trying to make her do PT until she pukes. She don't like it, Coulson has to show him a better way to get her to do it. Needless to say, the "Truth Serum" ruse from the Pilot was a ruse, but Coulson makes us think twice about that. But it is official now: He did NOT go to Tahiti.

Ian Hart is a scientist that was being transported in the Semi. Was there a bathroom in there? The very gadget that is used to effect his kidnapping was something he made. And now a Crook "Ian Quinn" (David Conrad) has made a "Bigger Version" of Hart's Gravity Gadget, big enough to cause a bunch of problems.

Initially, our guys are trying to kidnap this guy back, but when they find the connection to the Gravity Gadgets, something else is going on, as usual.

Is Skye still working for Rising Tide, or has she been assimilated by SHIELD? But she at least mastered Ward's gun-trick, and she's now working out with punching bags.

No cameos this week, but we see that Hart is still alive in the Gravity- Glop. SHIELD is making it's own demons.

The Man From S.H.I.E.L.D?
foreverknight479 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Fans of MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. won't be disappointed with this week's third episode. Aside from some nifty "playing around with gravity" sfx you're going to see Agent Coulson get SERIOUSLY bad-ass in a way you might never have suspected from the quiet voice and the twinkly smile.

More and more this series seems to be moving in on THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.'s format, with Skye as a permanent "member of the public" draftee instead of U.N.C.L.E.'s guest star draftee gimmick.

Plus more hints about Coulson's death and resurrection. For some reason Coulson seems to be missing his muscle memory. Now why might that be, I wonder?

Mission Impossible ???
pambosk7 January 2014
So far this series is not doing anything to me. This episode is like an update of the classic Mission Impossible TV series. One of the members infiltrates the baddie's hideout and things start to go wrong. Then the ending was like the last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark, with the item being locked up with many other secrets. Yaaaawwwn. Nick Fury has not shown up yet, and no super heroes. The whole thing is boring. its nothing like the comics ( films never are like the comics ). I shall not be watching any future episodes as i have better things to do with my time. Maybe watch episodes of Scooby Do. Film companies have yet to realize yet that if you want to grab peoples attention, do it from the first episode, not after 13 episodes.

Rewatch thoughts

There is much to love about this episode, it's fun creative and sharp with interesting new characters, though it has a lot of MCU references that seem forced... also when the episode aired, the end tease was left for a long time after that it felt unnecessary, but it does come back much later and I can now appreciate this episode more.
