Some strong, some weak

"The iMom" is an Australian 13.5-minute short film from 2014 and it is probably the most known work by writer and director Ariel Martin. The title already makes obvious what the film is about, namely the concept of robots who take care of your children when you want some time for yourself. So you may ask: But there's babysitters right? And the film makes a reference to that that parents don't want to deal with babysitters' mood swings. Okay. Early on, it is a bit difficult to say what this is supposed to be. Drama? Comedy? Thriller? Maybe even horror? I guess we can go with drama eventually. And science fiction of course. The film is a mix of fake documentary (interviews with couples who employ iMoms) and one specific example of the relationship between a boy and an iMom who apparently spends a great deal of time with the kid. I think this was an okay watch and as I am generally not too big on SciFi, this means quite something coming from me. Yes there are 2 or 3 weak moments and the editing is a but wild at times, but the contents are interesting and the sociocritical aspect adds a lot as well. Plus the actors are doing a fine job I guess. Looking at the quality here, I am a bit curious about Martin's other work. I see she has a couple more short films coming up and maybe soon it is time for her to enter full feature film territory. I could for example imagining this one being turned into a pretty good 90-minute movie too. Thumbs up from me. i recommend checking it out.

I don't know what shorts it was up against for the AACTA Awards, but it's likely this short should have won. Impressed

The Shallowness of Our World

Going back to the Twilight Zone and beyond, we have had presentations of robots raising children. Here, we are introduced to a society of young adults who want children but want nothing to do with them--hence, the iMom. This is a subtle view of what happens when we lose sight of these "creatures" being machines, programmed in certain ways. This film leaves a lump in the stomach. It has a lesson for all of us.

a warning

The final is predictable from the first part. the dialogue between boy and his special nanny represents the essence of film. the fake testimonies are the frame for this warning. about parenthood meaning. about public image. about the choice. changing everything. this film has not a precise genre apart. and that is a good thing. because , ignoring the few not real inspired scenes, the film works. more than many other Sci Fi short films. as precise diagnosis. for the fear who grows up near us.
