Dramatic moment during an apocalyptic world
Chronic_Crippler26 August 2015
Dead Therapy Staring: Julie Dickson, Reece Manning & Lucas Scheffel Directed by: Lucas Scheffel

Dead Therapy is a short film that draws us into a dramatic apocalyptic world that slowly builds up to Paul and Amanda's decision to either fight for life or stay hiding during a toxic event that could be exactly as horrifyingly as they think they remember or worse during their time stuck in an abandoned basement.

Reece Manning drives the story towards is climatic ending while Julie Dickson's performance is full of perfection and dramatic pause that draws us into an amazingly, beautiful and dramatically acted past history, at the same time as building towards the traumatic future they may have to live with in this gorgeously edited, acted, lighted and directed short film.

I feel 8/10 stories. Holli

Absolutely Stunning!

I was looking forward to seeing this film after seeing one of Lucas's earlier short films entitled "Mad 2 the Max" which I thought was a really good film, what more could you want guys, a fast v8, hot chicks in black skin tight leather, guns, the whole works and perks :P haha. It was very well shot and cut together short film from start to finish.

With Dead Therapy on the other hand I went in and kept an open mind about the whole film after seeing the 'Official Trailer which looked absolutely Stunning! from head to toe, it really stood out to me in a big way! and hit me like a sledgehammer so to speak. I had nothing but high hopes for this film from the very beginning and expected nothing but what Lucas does best. He delivered yet another Amazing!, very visually impressive film. The film was shot on a REDONE Camera, lighting was Incredible, Editing was flawless with its use of quick cuts that don't drag the film out and make it boring to watch, Location/Set Design equally impressive. I really love how simple but highly effective the film's idea was, you can really establish a connection between the two main characters Paul and Amanda played by the very talented Julie Dickson and Maurice Mammoliti.

And the one thing that really sold this film was its Amazing Sound Design and Music/Score it really did set the mood and the overall pacing/structure of the film. A very cleaver use of Voice Overs in there to help tell the story and offers such a powerful emotional performance between the two characters. Lucas also threw in a lot of Practical Effects from dust and dirt to large explosions coming from the barrel of a loaded shotgun.

Overall I thought this film was really good, it is a very well put together piece and I highly recommend it to anyone.

The only things that didn't quite gel with me and this is coming directly from the same background as Lucas that being a filmmaker are I'm just not a huge fan of Australians trying to put on American Accents, for some unknown reason it just doesn't feel or sound right and the use of some camera shots that I didn't quite click with. But other than that nothing effects the overall film experience.

I give this film (7/10)

Thanks, Luke Launer (Writer/Producer/Director)

I have had the pleasure of following Lucas Scheffel's journey as a film maker for a number of years now and I must say he has really shown that he means business with "Dead Therapy"

Dead Therapy was visually stunning and made you feel like you were actually there with the two main characters played by the talented Julie Dickson and Maurice Mamoliti.

The production value and acting in this film is great and the story definitely leaves you wanting more !!

I also enjoyed the use of voice overs and the way the composing helped tell the story.

I hope Lucas considers makes this into a feature film

Beautifully Haunting

Warning: Spoilers
Brett Bentman's writing set the foundation for what could have been a bumpy pay off. Many solid stories as such could very well fall flat in the wrong hands. A tip of the hat to Lucas Scheffel for not only his great direction but a equally solid vision. This combined with the gracious and emotional acting from both Julie Dickson and Recce Manning bring all the ingredients together creating the perfect short film. (I'll admit the film could be perceived as rough around the edges but it's a raw roughness that encompasses the world you are drawn into)

Dead Therapy is many layers deep. The clever yet subtle use of slow motion, "pure cinema" camera angles and wordily sound design backed up by wait for it...silence! Filmmakers use silence in your films! It's doesn't always have to be loud and whizz bang all the time! This is not an easy feat.

Yes this film is heavily dialogue driven but who cares! You don't even notice this. Recce Manning's performance plays like the character Rick Grimes early on in the series 'The Walking Dead'. He's emotional, straight to the point and tough. Julie Dickson as Amanda on the other hand is the provider of hope, love and all the inner feelings we need more of as human beings. Dickson's portrayal of Amanda reminds me of a young Reece Witherspoon, she's tormented inside and wants the Paul character to just feel.

Dead Therapy is not only an art like piece at times but more importantly a roller coaster of emotions which questions us as an audience; should we dwell on our past mistakes and failures? Or should we agree to disagree and just unconditionally love one another?

Leaves you wanting more...

Amanda and Paul find themselves locked inside a room. That's about enough to keep you engaged in this stylish thriller about hope and regret. The film was shot extremely well with a few cool angles that capture your eyes and never distract from the overall arc of the storytelling. What I liked about the film was that the Creature is left in the background here. There's no over the top gory Creature staring into your face. You get to see these horrors through the eyes of the main characters. Top notch acting by Mozz and the closing sequence can be watched time and time again. Overall, a bit dialog driven - but it works well.
