Compelling, Intelligent, Very Watchable
LordJiggy8 February 2014
At first, I wasn't sold on the lead actor Titus Welliver, at first. I know him from his other work, and had pictured the character of Bosch a little different physically. But he did a good job of conveying the moral depth of the character as well as his tough decency. By the middle of the episode, I was a convert and ready to see a lot more.

The series premiere was intelligent, well-written, and I loved the casting. Other than one or two characters who had to be "L.A. Beautiful," many of the actors seemed to be cast for having acting ability and striking (but not "gorgeous") features. It added a layer of authenticity to the proceedings.

Very well done, well worth your time.

Please pick this pilot up!
mmoyle9 February 2014
I really enjoyed this and really hope amazon decided to go ahead and make the full season.

Titus Welliver looks nothing like how I imagined Bosch to appear however it didn't worry me because he is a great actor and captured Harry's mood perfectly.

The supporting cast was excellent particularly Edgar and I noticed some strong actress's in the surrounding roles which bodes well for it's future. Harry's LA was very nicely captured on film particularly his home.

A great start please give us more.

Well worth the wait.

Anyone who has read the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly will recognize the books the pilot is taken from. The transition from print to screen is everything you could ask for and the acting & production values are excellent. Titus Welliver was the perfect choice to play Harry and Valerie Cruz is the medical examiner Theresa Corazon. Though I had not considered Lance Reddick as Irvin Irving, he is very good in that role. The cast is rounded out with such veteran actors as Alan Rosenberg, Troy Evans, Abraham Benrubi and Amy Aquino. I am recommending this program to all my family and friends. I hope Amazon will give the go ahead to start filming more episodes. If they do, I intend to subscribe to the Amazon Prime service.

LA homicide detective tracks down a child killer
tomcoxtoo7 February 2014
Without a close second, this is the best transformation of a well-known novel and its characters into film that I have ever seen. God willing, it will be made into a long-running series on Amazon or Netflix or whatever. I don't care. I just want to see more of the great writing, great acting, and fabulous location shooting in LA. Titus Welliver, a well-recognized TV character actor, is outstanding as Harry Bosch. Even Michael Connelly has commented on how accurate is Welliver's capture of the Bosch mood and style. One of the most impressive aspects of the pilot is how they re-created Bosch's hillside residence in LA. As a one- time resident in the Hollywood Hills, I had doubts that they could find anything like what Connelly portrayed in his books. But they did it! All part of the fantastic movement from well-written novel to well-played movie.

Captures the essence of Bosch!
jeffhazen951016 May 2014
The actor playing Bosch is unknown to me but he captures the essence of Connelly's character. I love the way they've recreated Harry's cantilevered home over the canyon. Love the jazz as well.

Hope they work Kiz Rider into the series as well as Maddie, Harry's daughter; and Micky Haller. The guy who plays Irvin Irving is a sinister looking dude. I liked him in the 'Intelligence" series this year.

Hope to see more Bosch novels soon. Want to see how he keeps going after his mandatory retirement. Will he groom and mentor a replacement? Will Maddie enter the police academy and follow in her father's footsteps?

For now, kudos! Keep up the great start!

Titus Welliver Nailed Harry Bosch
StevieD7 February 2014
I always pictured Bruce Willis as Bosch, but Titus Welliver's portrayal just fits Harry Bosch to a T. The pilot was excellently cast and I particularly liked seeing Alan Rosenberg in his role. I felt immersed in viewing it, just like I get immersed when reading Michael Connolly's works. The pacing was perfect. I love how it was filmed. It captured Harry's LA perfectly, even down to his house.

The pilot episode also captured many story arcs ... there's a lot of depth in there. Kudos to Amazon for showing this in this manner. It's a big part of the future of broadcast drama and is a way to counter Vegas with Dennis Quaid being canceled in spite of top 20 ratings because it delivered the 45+ demographic that TV networks don't give a hoot about. I hope Bosch goes on. I joined Amazon Prime, for the very reason that if this show gets the go-ahead, I want to watch it religiously.

Bosch is a hit in the making!
pmdwyer15 February 2014
Amazon Original's new pilot, Bosch, puts it all together: great writing, generous and subtle acting across the full range of characters, moody LA location set-ups (what one reviewer called using the location as a character), razor sharp editing and other production values. This is one of the best "TV" show I have seen in quite awhile. And for a pilot, it is a daring adventure into series-level plot arcs, and not just a pretty package wrapped up at the end of the show.

Connelley and Company's choice of Titus Welliver is particularly satisfying. A well-known face, but as far as I know, never a lead, and for that matter, never much of a sympathetic character, Welliver is deeply invested in the anti-hero character of Harry Bosch. Not just a film noir tough guy, but a deep soul revealed only in tiny bits that never bog down the narrative or the suspense.

Amazon could do far worse than to line this show up for 12-20 episodes in the next season!

Great start
hpoulter-114 February 2014
Wonderful realization of a long-time literary favorite. I don't know what that other reviewer's problem is with Titus Welliver - whom I had previously only thought of as "that guy from Lost". He is a fine actor and a credible Harry Bosch. I very much look forward to this series. Fine casting, intelligent writing and wonderful locations. When I saw Harry's house and balcony and heard the jazz music, I knew we were on the right track. Frank Morgan's Lullaby. Awesome.

Well, since IMDb requires me to write more, I would recommend that interested parties check out Michael Connelly's web site and Facebook page for an account of his total commitment with and enthusiasm for this project, and some background goodies For instance, the drunken Santa in an early scene is played by Connelly himself, with soup in his beard to simulate puke. Glamorous!

loved it, more, more & more again.......
susanlynch12528 April 2014
My dad and i are massive fans of Harry Bosch/Michael Connelly and have always wanted a series made and this definitely is a great start/pilot and i am gutted i don't know what happens next..aarrrgghhh!! I wasn't sure about Titus Welliver & obviously i had a picture of Harry in my head, dark brown/black eyes, dark/Grey hair, mustache etc & he was not what i expected but i liked him. I think he captured the feel of his complex character. the house in the hills over the city & the jazz, was great not sure if it was Art Pepper tho.

Overall i hope they make the full series, all the other cop shows are slick & full of ultra fast technology and amazingly they happen to catch the bad guys 1 episode but i feel Harry could bring back the actual hard gritty life of a LA cop like the books and keep you absolutely wanting more and more.

I love it!!!

p.s big thank you to Michael Connelly for bringing Harry back as i could have cried went he retired :)

Good show - bad lead actor
Shizuka20088 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The show is really good and I am a long time fan of Harry Bosch novels.

But please, guys, give us another actor to play Harry Bosch.

Titus (Who?) Wellilever or whatever his name clearly isn't up for the job.

Ruins the whole show.

Couldn't they have cast somebody else who at least looks and acts a little bit like the Harry Bosch from the novels?

It was really hard to enjoy the show because I always thought "Oh boy, that Titus fellow really doesn't belong there as Harry."

Worst miscast in TV history.

Imagine Tony Soprano being played by Robin Williams or Don Corleone by Jay Leno.

Great potential!
evansjannson13 February 2014
I really hope this show gets picked up. I am a huge fan of the books and would probably watch it even if Clint Eastwood was butchering another epic Connelly character. Good story line and great casting. Very smart move to have Connelly involved in the process. I was excited to see Jamie Hector and Lance Reddick from the Wire cast. Titus is great as Bosch. I feel like he was over acting a little and trying too hard to be tough/cool (tilting his head way too much). But in his defense, anyone who has read the Bosch series has his own version of Harry deeply embedded in his mind. I know this show will evolve into an instant classic if given the chance. I vote for more please!!

Chapter One: 'Tis the Season
Prismark1027 June 2022
The first episode has Harry Bosch shooting dead a suspect. It then goes forward two years as Bosch faces a civil suit for the death of the man he shot dead.

The opposing lawyer Honey Chandler is playing dirty and has Bosch on the ropes.

Wanting to keep busy, Bosch gets involved in an incident where a retired doctor has found a human bone somewhere in the Hollywood hills.

Forensic analysis show that this was a child who had been physically abused for a long time. It is something that reaches inside Bosch himself.

A solid opener. The trial segments are over the top, the judge allowed Chandler way too much leeway.

It did uncover Bosch's past and his upbringing. No wonder he was upset over the suffering of the dead boy.

Compelling detective series!
voiceof6724 August 2020
From the opening scene, this series grabs you. It's an excellent crime drama with several cases each season woven with one or more "back stories" to compel the viewer to want more! Six seasons to keep you wanting more.

Excellent start
grantss17 December 2022
Bosch is a detective in the LAPD. One night he shoots and kills a suspect in what appears to be self defence. He is cleared by an internal investigation but now, two years later, he is facing a civil action brought on by the deceased's widow. He is also investigating the 25-year-old remains of a child who was clearly beaten severely over a prolonged period before dying.

I had heard great things about Bosch and the IMDB rating made watching this even more compelling. Despite thus setting my expectations high I was still very impressed by the series. Some great mysteries and character depth plus good, realistic feeling, coverage of police procedure.

It's rare nowadays that having watched the first episode of s series I can't wait to watch the second one and feel compelled to do so immediately. Bosch is such a series.

Solid episode with interesting police procedural scenes and good character moments
snoozejonc24 June 2023
An LAPD detective is on trial for killing a suspect, before a body is unearthed.

My (uneducated) first impression is that there is a fair bit of effort gone into the forensic aspect of the story, which is good and the characters are quite watchable thanks to the performances and some quiet moments of humour.

Some of the character writing is a bit clunky in its exposition of Bosch's backstory, but importantly it made me want to find out what happens next.

Titus Welliver leads it well and is supported well by others like Jamie Hector and Scott Wilson.

Visually the action sequences are quite tense and there are some particularly good moments of crime scene investigation. The art design is generally strong.

For me it's a 7.5/10, but I round upwards.
