George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the anticipated latest installment in his apocalyptic franchise, had its world premiere here at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.
The film received a standing ovation of 7 minutes and 50 seconds after the final frame played in Cannes’ massive Palais, which hosted the buzzy premiere and the cast that included Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays the titular character first essayed by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road; Chris Hemsworth; and Tom Burke.
Baz Lurhmann, who was at Cannes two years ago with Elvis, was overheard as he exited the theater tonight calling the film “a steampunk, Wagnerian opera.”
Said Miller following the screening of the Warner Bros/Village Roadshow prequel to 2015’s Fury Road (which likewise world premiered in Cannes), “Thank you. We worked very hard on this film and it is very interesting to see what you make of it.”

With the long “Elvis” awards season behind him, Austin Butler is gearing up for two major upcoming releases: Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part 2” and the Apple TV+ miniseries “Masters of the Air.” The latter comes from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks and serves as the third installment in their long-running World War II saga that also includes the acclaimed “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” In a recent interview with The Times of London, Butler revealed that he nabbed a starring role in “Masters of the Air” after Hanks grew concerned about his mental health on “Elvis.”
According to Butler, Hanks told him: “You have immersed yourself so deeply in ‘Elvis’ that, for your mental health, it would be wise to go straight into something else. If you just jump off the train, you might have emotional whiplash… and, you know, I’ve got this thing I’m producing.

BAFTA has unveiled the longlists across all categories for its 2023 Film Awards, and Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy The Banshees Of Inisherin and Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front lead.
Martin McDonagh’s impressive Banshees haul includes Best Director, Film, and Screenplay nods while Colin Farrell is up for Leading Actor and Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon were handed Best Support Actor and Actress nods.
Charlotte Well’s festival favorite Aftersun appears on eight lists, including Best Film, Director, and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Other titles that are well represented today include Oliver Hermanus’s Living and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.
In notable snubs, James Cameron’s Avatar sequel The Way of Water did not make either the Best Film or Director longlists. The box office hit is absent from all major categories but shows strongly in craft categories, including Sound and Special Visual Effects.

Hold onto your bucket hats: Sony’s action-thriller “Bullet Train” crossed 100 million at the domestic box office.
It’s an impressive milestone in post-covid times for an original movie that doesn’t involve marquee comic book heroes or intergalactic adventures. It helps, of course, that a bankable actor like Brad Pitt stars in the film, as a heavily therapized assassin named Ladybug.
On Friday, “Bullet Train” reached 101 million in domestic ticket sales, making it only the 14th release this year to hit that benchmark. With another 130 million at the international box office, the film has now earned 231 million in global ticket sales to date.

Well, he didn’t rule it out.
Director Baz Luhrmann, whose 2001 film Moulin Rouge! became a 2018 Broadway hit musical, says a similar path for his 2022 Elvis Presley biopic might be inevitable.

The King is back. After rocking the box office since earlier this summer — and earning a reported 141 million so far — Elvis, Baz Luhrmann’s epic telling of the rock & roll legend, has finally hit streaming services.
The film stars Austin Butler as the titular character, with Tom Hanks playing Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker, and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley. “Elvis, in the epic tradition of all of Luhrmann’s work, is a brash, overwhelming experience,” Rolling Stone‘s K. In a strategic move by Universal, “Jurassic World: Dominion” (19.99) kept “Elvis” (Wbd/19.99) from two clear weeks at the top of VOD charts. Next week, all other game plans will be moot: “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount/19.99) comes to PVOD rental platforms Tuesday and will undoubtedly dominate for the foreseeable future.
Meantime, Netflix viewers continue to confound their overlords by preferring to watch the streamers’ less high-profile original films rather than the more expensive star-branded ones. “Look Both Ways” with “Riverdale” star Lili Reinhart as a college senior thinking through alternatives for her future knocked off Jamie Foxx’s “Day Shift” (now #3).

Wise men say only fools predict that adult-skewing films won’t work at the pandemic box office. But older moviegoers kept falling in love with Warner Bros’ Elvis this summer, to the point where it’s now director Baz Luhrmann’s highest-grossing movie ever in U.S. and Canada with 144.851 million, beating the original run of his 2013 title The Great Gatsby, which made 144.84M.
Elvis in its ninth weekend made 1.98M, down 23 week over week, at 1,741 locations.
The Great Gatsby, the take of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic novel starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, counts a lifetime gross in the U.S. and Canada of 144.857M, and Elvis will clearly boogey past that today as well. Worldwide, the Austin Butler-Tom Hanks biopic at 269.8M ranks as Luhrmann’s second highest-grossing movie of his career after Great Gatsby‘s 353.6M. Luhrmann also produced and co-wrote Elvis.

Tuesday marks the 45th anniversary of Elvis’ death, but the King of Rock’n’Roll still rules. Released last week, “Elvis” (Warner Bros. Discovery/19.99) is #1 at Vudu (ranking by revenue) as well as iTunes and Google Play (listing by transactions). It also represents a new PVOD strategy for Wbd that says much about the studio’s priorities.
With 134 million domestic and still #9 this weekend, “Elvis” is the first Wbd film this year not available on HBO 45 days after release. That’s a radical shift for the studio, which released all films in theaters and on HBO Max day-and-date last year.
With every release, studios with streamers must weigh the values: PVOD at 19.99, allowing it the immediate benefit of retaining a rental price of 14 or more? Or, the more-uncertain potential to attract a subscriber who adds to the value of the streaming service — especially when it will soon wind up there as well?...

Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer and ‘Elvis’ breakthrough star Austin Butler will make up the ensemble cast for Jeff Nichols feature ‘The Bikeriders.’
The fictional story inspired by the photography of Danny Lyon and his 1967 book is an original story set in the 1960s following the rise of a fictional Midwestern motorcycle club. Streaming platforms announced Wednesday that Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” still thriving in theaters, will be released on PVOD on Tuesday, August 9.
But sources tell IndieWire that its availability on Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max will not be on the same date. Luhrmann previously stated that it wouldn’t come to the studio’s streamer until “fall.” Wbd has never confirmed that, but any HBO Max premiere after 45 days in theatrical release would run counter to its plans for 2022 theatrical releases.
After a tumultuous 2021 when all Warners films appeared on Max day-and-date with theaters, the company said the plan was 45 days going forward. That was the case even for “The Batman,” despite its grossing 360 million — nearly triple the “Elvis” take so far. “The Batman” also had a parallel PVOD release, although initially at 29.99.
Several factors might have weighed into the “Elvis” strategy.

Exclusive: Olivia DeJonge (Elvis) has been set as the female lead for The Trashers—the latest feature from Sundance prize-winning director Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), which will have her starring alongside David Harbour and Cooper Hoffman.
The film will center on Hoffman’s character Aj—the teenage son of Connecticut trash magnate and Genovese crime family associate Jimmy Galante (Harbour). In 2004, Galante bought the city’s minor-league hockey team and assigned A.J. to run it. The two had bonded over their love for the game when A.J. played, with his crooked father hoping to hold onto their bond. The kid did well, watching the team gain notoriety for its rough and violent style of play but also developing a wide fan base as it started to win more and more games. The team’s success and fame all came to an abrupt end with Galante’s arrest on 72 criminal charges.

Austin Butler truly did everything to prepare to play Elvis Presley.
From taking on a Southern accent to doing karate to transform into the King of Rock ‘n Roll, Butler pushed himself to the limit for the role. Yet “Elvis” writer-director Baz Luhrmann added another layer to recreate the emotions behind Presley’s biggest performances.
“Well, when I was on my first day in the recording studio, Baz wanted me to get as close to performing as possible,” Butler explained to Vman. “He had all the executives and everybody from RCA, who were back in the offices, he brought them into the recording studio and he goes, ‘I want you all to sit facing Austin,’ and he told them to heckle me. So then they were making fun of me and stuff while I was singing.”
Butler noted Luhrmann wanted him to empathize with the criticism Presley endured over the course of his career.

In a remarkable benchmark for an adult, female-skewing movie, especially with a 2 hour 39 minute running time, Warner Bros.’ Elvis has crossed the 100M mark at the domestic box office.
As we’ve written, the feat provides a lot of promise on a number of levels. It’s a win for older counter-programming at a U.S./Canada box office where only comic book films and heavy franchise films can win. Just because it’s not a tentpole doesn’t mean the movie needs to relegated to streaming. And above all, after many were concerned that older females and adults wouldn’t come back to the back office, here’s Elvis proving them wrong.
In its first two weeks in ComScore/Screen Engine PostTrak audience polling, Elvis dynamited the over 55 demo at 31 with close to half over 45. Forty-five percent of the audience were women over 25 who gave the movie its best...

After a heated box office battle, “Elvis” emerged victorious over “Top Gun: Maverick” to claim the top spot on North American box office charts.

Looking at this weekend’s box-office returns you may very well be wondering what year it is as Tom Cruise slugged it out with Tom Hanks for bragging rights over who has the top-grossing movie in North America. As Sunday’s receipts were still being tallied, it appeared as if the the two A-list veterans were locked in a virtual dead heat, with each of their latest films pulling in 30.5 million each. If a clear victor is not established by Monday, this one may come down to hanging chads and mail-in votes, folks. However, as it stands right now, it’s Cruise’s five-week-old blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick, that looks to have the slight edge (by mere decimal points) over Hanks’ new razzle-dazzle biopic, Elvis. Meanwhile, Universal’s latest Blumhouse-produced chiller, The Black Phone, debuted in fourth place with a strong 23.4 million bow.

Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis — starring Austin Butler as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll — is dancing to a better-than-expected 30 million to 32 million opening at the domestic box office after topping Friday’s chart with 12.7 million, including 3.5 million in previews.
That could be enough to win the weekend ahead of Top Gun: Maverick, which is doing formidable business in its fifth weekend, thanks to being rereleased in Imax and other premium screens.
Elvis, from Warner Bros., has older moviegoers to thank: 65 percent of the audience so far is over the age of 35, including a whopping 30 percent over 55. Naturally, Luhrmann’s frenetic Elvis Presley biopic performed best in the South. Audiences bestowed it with an A- CinemaScore, compared to a 79 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film co-stars Tom Hanks as infamous music manager Colonel Tom Parker and Olivia DeJonge (The Visit) as Priscilla Presley.

Triple threat talent Austin Butler rightfully put the music first when portraying the King of Rock ‘n Roll.
The “Elvis” star worked with dialect coaches to perfect the sound of Elvis Presley’s voice and “sang every day” to prepare for the role. But “Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Butler was so hyper-aware of his presence as Presley that Butler stopped Luhrmann from filming a “corny” performance for the film, in theaters June 24.
“The scene where Elvis has to inspire his new big band in Vegas to do this modern version of ‘That’s Alright (Mama)’ — this big concept in his mind,” Luhrmann explained. “We rehearsed for three months to a playback tape that we had. But when I was shooting, Austin looked at me and was like, ‘This just is corny. This is not working. It’s fake.'”
