Have loved subaru so far but this man is making some terrible calls in this episode. He makes about 10 bad decisions in a row, ultimately leaving him on bad terms with his love Emilia. I love ya brotha but you gotta think before you act !!!

This is THE episode

Warning: Spoilers
This is it right here.
This is the episode that truly cemented this series.
Up until this point the series was incredibly good. Definitely a must watch. However, this was the episode that truly made me realise "This show is a masterpiece".
This is the most hated episode in the entire series. I believe this is because people are focusing way too much on what is happening and not why it is. It is often criticized for Being cringeworthy and making Subaru an awful protagonist. This is just downright wrong. They will tell you that he is utterly awful for everything he has done while completely ignoring why he did it and everything that led up to that point as well as what this means going forward.
The scene in the royal selection at the start of the episode is undoubtedly hard yo get through. But that does not diminish the episode as a whole and it most certainly does not diminish the series. No, if anything it only makes seeing him punished for his actions and forced to change even better. This is an incredibly flawed character at this point and those flaws are presented perfectly in a realistic and delicate manner.
There are so many great moments in this episode. The fight with Julius is one. Another is the conversation with Emilia at the end of the episode. Both are spectacularly directed and have the bar none peak of voice acting that is a staple of this series. In the fight with Julius we get to see that Subaru can't just get away with acting the way he has been. We get to see a clash between two opposing, realistic ideals of fantastic characters. In the talk between Emilia and Subaru we get to see two people, in a realistic relationship, experiencing the strain of Subaru's actions. We get to see Subaru's flaws and motivations on full display and Emilia's character and how she responds to a situation like this which is just so perfect and lines up with her backstory as we see later.
All and all I can't praise this episode enough. It still amazes me that this series was not only able to reach this level once again later but surpassed it multiple times. I highly doubt anyone who hasn't already seen the whole show will see this but if you haven't it is something you need to do as soon as possible.
Thanks for your time!
