This was possibly one of the worst documentaries I've seen. The trailer implies that the movie will be exploring how doctors, scientists, humanitarians, city planners, etc. determine who gets helped, or how we as a society should do this.

We follow a Guatemalan woman with cervical cancer. And sometimes various people in Nepal. This would have been great if these peoples' stories had been influenced at all by ideas or calculations about who should give what money to whom and how much is too much to be used on one person when it could save others.

The camerawork is great. But the story is disjointed. Several times we cut from "Cerencia is doing much better" to "Cerencia's health is bad again" with no time lapse or explanation of how or why.

The DALY (Disability-adjusted life year) is introduced and an equation drawn on the chalkboard by the guy who came up with it. That's it. About 2 sentences dedicated to it. We see an equation later that sort of looks like the DALY and they divide it by 4. There was no explanation of what the "4" represented: people? years? dependents? nope.

And that's literally all of the "Equation" that this "Life Equation" movie shows us.
