Empty Headed
Hitchcoc21 May 2019
We have a guy with a jeep being pulled by a couple horses. He is looking for his wife and child. He is obviously a mess and completely deranged. He is willing to shoot people in cold blood. He goes to get some water at one point. A guy shoots at him and he kills the man. Later, when he comes upon a caravan of people in theatrical garb (and running a prostitution ring), he fixates on one of the women, What happens next is just so strange. But we are being led by a man with a truly sick mind. The problem is the film and the storytelling.

Starts out moderately interesting but disappointing

Like so many "shorts" these days, this is a pointless, plot less film (at least from the viewpoint of the viewer) that while interesting, goes nowhere. It's set in a dystopian future, the plot is as thin and sparse as the countryside. The settings and characters show promise but there is no cause, reason, protagonist, hero, anti-hero, explanation or resolution. It's not a slice-of-life, a quest, relationship drama, or anything decipherable. It doesn't even qualify as abstract surrealism save for the makeup of characters that could benefit from a little more depth.

There's no reason for a short film leading nowhere. One can't say, "We only had 15 minutes to do this." Commercials can tell an entire story in 30 seconds. This is just a typical waste-of-time film that had some potential but -- as is becoming more and more common in this everyone-has-a-videophone age-- blows it all by failing to start with a decent plot and script.

This could have been so much better if the director had simply let the audience in on what was going through his mind. The reason I give it 3 stars rather than 2 is because of the humorous and interesting 'horse and buggy' contrivance as well as the look of the main camp. Beyond that all that's left is contrivance, nothing of interest here, move along, move along.
