Gets so much better
tomballard-639984 November 2021
Please persevere with this. It's bad at the beginning, almost to the point of being deliberate. The colour is off, the camera work shoddy and sound design unpleasant. As the series progresses, it all gets better. I am trying to work out whether this is deliberate, as if until he 'finds his story' the world is bland and pointless. If this wasn't intentional.... no idea why, but it really does become worth it further in.

Engaging

But what's with the poor production? The sound is terrible in places. I'd love to think it was deliberate (as another reviewer has proffered) but it's random and doesn't fit.

The storyline is paced well and engaging. It nicely builds up the plot over time. Some fun characters.

This as Groundhog type of story gets better and better as the days pass. The characters do seem bland at first. But if it was happening to you would your life have the wow effect to start with? But as the days pass and you learn things or even do things like rob a bank or shoot someone, maybe with a reason or maybe without.

It changes you.

What happens when you kill someone without a reason and the day does not reset? As for the current top review of the plot is only "get out of this" Maybe the plot changes but I myself would live the day after day doing some crazy things till It all became bland then I would work on the "get out of this".

Groundhog Day covered this as well. But at some point you would want the day to end. Might be in 2 years might be in 2000 years. How long before the human mind breaks?

Truly original addition to canon
sphinx-4210 October 2021
The other reviews here make no sense to me. Breakers introduces an entirely new twist to the Groundhog Day canon that I have never seen tackled before. Every episode reveals something new, with suspense building steadily until a perhaps confusing, but definitely intriguing climax. Bring on Season 2!

Surprisingly okay watch

This is another one of those shows you've never heard of then stumble on it by accident on Prime. They can be really hit and miss, to the point I've stopped watching many before episode 1 is done.

This one did something unexpected. Despite obvious low(ish) budget production values - they're hard to deny - the story was genuinely immediately interesting. I wanted to see what happened next. The lead actor James DeWitt is an absolute unknown to me, but I found him very endearing. He is for the most part very deadpan and unemotional. This could just be a lack of acting range but it really suited this character perfectly so I'm going to be kind and really rate him. And I honestly felt the production got increasingly better as the episodes progressed.

Ten episodes was just the right side of stretching it. They could probably have got away with 8 but it definitely benefited from TV form rather than a rushed movie. Be warned though, it is a 'stuck in a time loop' story so it gets increasingly confusing towards the end as you try to remember what has and has not happened. Not a show to watch if you're only half paying attention.

Overall this is not a big commitment in terms of time and well worth a watch. It does a sci-fi repeated time story without the deep science of something like Looper. And it touches on some religious vibes without the heaviness of something like Left Behind.

Stick with it, builds well.

Yeah it's another one based on the Groundhog idea, but it comes up with some interesting plot twists and keeps you wanting to watch. Obviously it's low budget but they really do well with what they've got. Worth your time.

Hidden Gem

Came across this by accident on Amazon Prime. Started off thinking it was intriguing though a bit low budget. However quickly got hooked and watched all episodes. A unique take on the 'reliving the same day' scenario. Well worth a watch.

What is really extraordinary about this series is that it goes completely against the current trend where TV series in general are far superior to the feature films coming out of Hollywood. As impossible as it sounds, BREAKERS has managed to take a series and give it the look and feel of a bad B-movie from the 70s. The casting is bad, the lead actor, who relies a lot on voiceover, has a voice like chalk on a blackboard, the lighting is terrible, the dialog is terrible ... well you get the idea.

Be patient and you will be rewarded

This is the kind of gem you can unearth from your streaming services if you search hard enough (and are lucky). Not typical of any particular genre. When groundhog day spirals out of control. Ok, it doesn't have the highest production values but it is well constructed to support the story. And it is all about the story which develops over the series in unexpected directions.

I would have loved to see where a second series would have taken us.

I will look out for the creative team and see what they can achieve in the future. They deserve that opportunitity.

PS I loved the music too, haunting and in keeping with the show.

E for Effort

A complete waste of time. Why another stuck in the same day show? And if they've done,it, why couldn't they at least TRY to be a bit more original...

Interestingly Borrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiing
cjgmusic5 July 2021
I'm always in for this type of story to see how they treat the concept and what's different. There's only one difference between this amateur effort and more successful thought-provoking efforts, nothing new is introduced. I suffered through the first episode, but there's nothing to spur me on, at all. The characters are bland and really, pointless. The plot is almost non-existent other than, 'get out of this'. The main character seems to think the scene remains the same, but everyone's actions are different. Uhh.....That's the same in every one of these 'repeating the same 24 hrs' stories! Idk, I probably won't go back bc it seems like they didn't really put much effort in, so why should I?

Good Idea Gone Boring
samstone1126 April 2022
The premise of reliving a day over and over is tired, so it takes a fresh approach to grab your attention, and something exceptional to keep it. Despite less than professional production and mediocre acting, with the exception of JB Edwards who rises above the environment, this series is capable of holding your attention.

Temporarily.

Without enough energy or originality to carry the story beyond the first few episodes it becomes acceptable to skip from the third to the last episode and accept there will be missing pieces. Unfortunately, the writing, production, and acting didn't make any appreciable difference and I was able to watch the entire thing in 4 episodes. Sure, there were a few people and situations I didn't recognize by skipping six episodes, but I understood enough. A mediocre story with a few uniquely satisfying moments to keep the viewer engaged, but not enough. Far, far too long and frankly skipping the middle seven or eight episodes will do the trick. In short (pun intended), as a 90 minute movie script in the hands of professionals, Breakers could have been all it aspired to be.

Just not as a 10 episode drawn out series without more frequent, steady payoffs.

Shame.
