I enjoyed Bad Ben which is strange as I hate found footage, this was probably due to having stationary cameras in the house, the first two have there share of scares and suspense. This the final one is a mild comedy which to be fair has some funny dialogue and slapstick comedy at the end. The film is a send up of found footage horror but the problem is does it work, sadly not really. I am not sure why he decided to go on this route as a final horror to bring the threads together I believe would have worked, the acting in this one is not great, hats off to the bloke he has made three movies for the cost of the buffet on some truly awful movies I have endured.

Warning: Spoilers
"Bad Ben" shocked me by how good it was, despite its derpy name and even worse trailer. With only one guy writing, producing, directing, editing, and using his own house as the setting, it was an expert minimalist found footage film that managed to make do with very little while remaining genuinely creepy and unsettling.
The next movie, the prequel, did the exact opposite, looking to ruin every aspect of the original film's mystery and intrigue by pointlessly over-explaining every little detail and filling in with an incoherent, rambling backstory featuring genuinely unlikeable characters and relying on atrocious visual effects as opposed to the very deft minimal effects usage.
This movie serves as a sequel to "Bad Ben" and probably could have/should have been the 2nd movie in the series ahead of that atrocious prequel.
The story here involves a crew of paranormal investigators doing a show based on the "Bad Ben" videos, released in-universe to a "fanbase" of millions. They discover that Tom survived the events of the first movie, and due to him sinking his life savings into the house (as he repeatedly mentions) is now broke and homeless.
The crew convinces him to reluctantly return and be interviewed about his experiences, and folks... it's a mess.
More and more, Nigel Bach's work with "Bad Ben" seems to be revealed as either a fluke or a work of genius that could only sustain itself for one film and is being forcibly dragged out. With regards to the writing/dialogue, Nigel Bach's success with "Bad Ben" was definitely a fluke.
"Bad Ben" had the main character, Tom, as a decent, rather pleasant everyman with an odd charm to him as he set about exploring the house, renovating, and dealing with the events involved, while being rather likeable and relatable at times.
Here, he is none of that. He is understandably upset with the crew for digging him up and bringing him back to the house, but for the entire rest of the film, he is just needlessly obnoxious and a rude asshole to everyone else and everything else. Some of his behavior is tepidly "explained" as being PTSD, despite it not at all being related to PTSD but just him being an asshole.
The crew itself is not as malignantly unlikeable as the young couple in the prequel, but seem to have an odd relationship with each other and an apparent lack of understanding about the world or basic social conventions. At some point they are discussing what to do when Tom gets lost, and one of them, Schmiddy, suggests leaving. Jackie is angered at the thought of abandoning Tom and asks "What is wrong with you?" and Schmiddy hysterically retorts "You know I'm dyslexic!" which not only has nothing at all to do with anything but plays absolutely no role in the film at all despite it being his defining character trait in the IMDB plot summary.
Actually, due in large part to the prequel over-explaining everything, there is little to no creepiness in any of the Ghosty events. Instead, they come across as funny. The wind-like demon growls are treated with tiresome disdain as Tom basically converses with the Demon's growls with snark and sarcasm. During an interview segment with Tom, they ask him about what his experience with the house is and his repeated response is "Bankruptcy"
Stuff that would've had us jump in surprise, like the door opening on its own or chairs sliding on their own, are hilariously casual and frequently either ignored or unnoticed by Tom in particular.
After the crew ends up disappearing in the basement, there's a very long sequence involving Tom basically wandering around the house, angrily grumbling at the Demon as it growls back at him and shuts doors around. I was laughing nonstop as he shambles about, muttering angrily to himself, starting to remove all the cameras while muttering to himself, mocking the crew and sarcastically quoting some of them, all the while slagging off with the demon ghosts like he was an angry roommate threatening to leave.
I'm pretty sure comedic wasn't what they were going for, but the comedy comes naturally in a mix of Tom's "I no longer care about all this" attitude mixed with the flat, affect-less style of filming, and bad dialogue. At one point, Tom even angrily accuses Jacqui of talking like Trump tweets, a painfully immersion-breaking moment that doesn't even make sense in context.
By the last bit of the movie, everyone is trapped in the house and Tom is wandering around with a bike helmet and a cane, ready to "fight" the demon. The demon possesses Jacqui, only for Tom to inexplicably appear, leading Bad Ben to go and fight the demon. It ends the next morning with Bad Ben trying to pull Tom back into the basement, only for Tom to somehow overpower him, going "Bad! Bad Ben!" and ordering him to go outside, before emerging from the basement naked, with a comically long "CENSORED" bar over his genitals.
Perhaps there was realization that the previous movie, the prequel, was a flailing, incoherent pile and decided to go for a wacky, comedic mess instead.

Works as a comedy

The biggest problem this movie has is that it is placed in the horror genre of film. This film works much better as a comedy especially when Nigel is on screen. The special effects are extremely funny, and Nigel's way of handling the situation so reminds me of a Mr Magoo with his eyesight intact, that also likes to use foul language. If you go into this movie looking for a laugh you're going to get more than you bargained for, if you're looking to get scared, you're watching the wrong movie.
Thank God for Tom

A pointless sequel

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't mind the original BAD BEN but the other films in the series have been duds. This sequel sees the guy from the original returning, but this time he's accompanied by a couple of irritating investigator characters who bring nothing to the story. More PARANORMAL ACTIVITY-indebted supernatural shenanigans follow, but it's all so cheap and routinely staged that the viewer will have dozed off long before the end. The lack of surveillance footage and focus on constant chit-chat is what kills this one.
Wow

This wasn't that bad, but I think the best of the series was Bad Ben and Bad Ben:The Mandela Effect.
Something about having the other actors doesn't do much for me. Id bet there would have been another way to get the back story of Bad Ben told in the prequel, or touched on here... But ... I've never wrote, directed, acted in and edited a movie before so... Nigel.. well done!
The MORE people in the movie...the WORSE it gets.

You'd THINK with a bigger cast than the original "Bad Ben" (which only had a cast of one) that this would be a better movie, wouldn't you? NOPE! The acting in this film is HORRIBLE! (the female investigator is by FAR the worst) When I saw the "special effects" I KNEW I was in for a big bad ride. There's nothing in the film that is really all that scary. It's more FUNNY than anything. All the creepiness of the original is LONG GONE. I have seen WORSE "found footage" movies, but this one is pretty bad. I'm giving it a GENEROUS 3 stars......just because I'm in a good mood.

I am pretty generous with my reviews. I really liked the first one except I wanted more of an explanation of 'Bad Ben' and the ending and, with the second two, I got one. However, this is DEFINITELY a horror- comedy. DO NOT go in with the expectation of being scared out of your wits. I found myself genuinely laughing at parts. It was very entertaining. For example, Tom's cussing at the beginning of the documentary. Jacquie: "Tell me what happened here" Tom: "I lost my f*ing money." And when the cameraman was tearfully giving his possible last testimonial "I don't know why everyone calls me Schmiddy, my name is Tristan Carmichael! I'm so sorry I was a Paranormal Investigator- what a stupid job!" Also, you do not know what to predict for an ending so you do get drawn in. No one is particularly likable, so by horror standards, do they all die?
These movies are growing on me.

Bad Ben Is A WINNER

I am a true BENITE - I have seen all the Bad Ben movies and I love them all. Nigel Bach is a horror movie genius!!! With a very low budget and one very nice house in New Jersey he manages to make very entertaining films. My top three favorites are the first Bad Ben, The Way In, and Badder Ben. If you're a horror fan you must give the Bad Ben series a try.

Not the best

I actually liked Bad Ben and thought it was put together quite well despite it being shot, acted and edited by one guy.
However, this really wasn't the best and it was almost like it was a bunch of friends making a movie for something to do on a weekend because they were bored.
I found it strange that there was no music anywhere in the film to help cause tension etc.
Other than that, at least this guy got off his backside and got out there put something together regardless of whether it was good or bad. But unfortunately I cant give it a rating higher than a 3.

Wow. Acting bad. Plot good. Very much a Mish mash. Jacquie was awful. But scary funny sometimes. Don't expect the world but it does have answers about the first two movies and that was good. Actors aside from Tom were awful. Bad Ben was very funny not scary. I give it 4/10 and that's being kind
Worst acting everrrr

Much of the same footage. It was quarky, silly, funny and gave more info on the story of Bad Ben. The acting is so terrible, it was funny. How many times does she switch from pants to shorts? 'Oh, I'm going to sit at the table in pants and run to the living room and *KA-POW* magic shorts!' Must be that medium power she has going on! Keep an open mind and have a laugh.
Badder film.

There appear to be several films in this series with this being the third, and from what I have seen they decline in integrity and production value as they go on. I actually quite enjoyed the first film, it had an admirable low budget charm, and credit must be given to the single handed nature of its production, but Badder Ben was just plain awful, too much bad acting and unnecessarily comedic moments. It has none of the scares or atmosphere of the original.
I lowered my rating on Badder Ben
jmat4023 August 2020
I originally gave Badder Ben 5 stars. I've revised that to 2 stars after watching it multiple times and that is due to Jacquie. That woman irritates me something awful. Badder Ben is the worst, in my opinion, of all the Bad Ben movies and that is mainly due to Jacquie Baker. She's really bad.
Seriously bad

Despite other user reviews I went ahead and tried to watch this movie because I had just finished and loved Bad Ben. This movie is a joke. The acting is horrible. It's like a middle schooler's YouTube project. I gave up after 10 mins

What can be said about this movie. It is shot alright. The acting could use some work, though they could only go so far with the script. This one was more for fun and not as serious as the previous ones. I wouldn't recommend this movie unless you really liked the first 2. I would give this a 3 out of 10, though for most independent found footage movies that is not that bad.
Best movies ever!!!

I am obsessed with this saga and Nigel is a genius. He is so freaking hilarious and the best part of the movies. I love how he revisited his best lines from Bad Ben in this movie and the ending was such a pleasant surprise! Idk if these movies are meant to be comedic, but they make me ugly laugh! I've been telling everyone in my office about these movies. I literally made an IMDb account just to write these reviews.
The first two were better...this one is funnier
jbrbsmom2 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
NOT as serious as the first two...a bit mocking of itself almost. The acting is NOT as good. You actually hope the lead female role gets munched by some demonic force because she is a lousy actress and her scared face and her laughing face and her surprised face look exactly the same.
If you are interested in a plot that actually makes sense, skip this one. You will actually come up with the ending as a joke yourself.

Best Found Footage Series!

Love the realism of character interactions and reactions. The lore is unique while incorporating aspects of demonology and know paranormal practice to create a believable and entertaining atmosphere that doesn't seem like every other ghost film out there. I love Nigel Bach's brand of horror and comedy. Need more movies like this!!!
Respect it for what it is

Absurd. It's absurd. And delightfully so.
I don't think I've posted a review in ten years, if ever. But I feel compelled to do so here given the few reviews and the fact that they're mostly negative. This movie shouldn't be taken seriously. It's a dark comedy.
I enjoyed Bad Ben. I've recently come to love found footage films and the reason it took so long is because many don't do it right. Bad Ben does. It's spooky with a "who wants to watch this guy?" main character who brilliantly pulled it off. I wanted to watch him. He's funny, doesn't rattle easy, and doesn't believe in much. This is not your common main character for these movies. And being that he's the only character in the movie it is all the more impressive that he kept my attention. He also says and does what many audience members say/are thinking when watching paranormal movies so that is a fun breath of fresh air. The ending was worth the wait.
Steelmanville Road was entertaining but fell flat compared to Bad Ben. They lost the humor, added "meh" actors, and had a murky script. But that didn't stop me from enjoying the more obvious scares and explanation for all the confusing bits about Bad Ben. All in all, I enjoyed it but rate it much lower than the first. (Isn't that always the way with sequels?)
Badder Ben, though... man, I loved it! I clapped nerdily when the "this is for the fans" line ran at the beginning. This movie is just so silly with all the right bits of spook added in where it belongs. Having a few extra characters helps move the story and having a medium is a nice touch. Nigel Bach is amazing. I don't want to give anything away, but I will say that if you enjoyed the first installment even a little then this is worth a watch. I laughed a LOT and will absolutely recommend it to any fan of horror comedies/found footage films. Enjoy!
