Forget about it. Literally
A_Different_Drummer13 May 2021
This 90 min low budget indie has 3 or 4 good ideas, several dozen bad ideas, and enough fake reviews to make PLANET 9 look like Oscar material. There are 2 minutes of actual Kung Fu in the movie, and 88 minutes of pure unadulterated WTF.

Forget About It
nogodnomasters4 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Vinny Chow (Jay Kwon ) lives in Chinatown of NYC but wants to be a wiseguy. He likes Tina, an Italian girl who only want a wiseguy. This is a comedy mob film. There are three competing mobs in the business of condiments, spices and herbs. They supply restaurants with this items of questionable expiration dates and no bulk discount.

There are a number of gag names: Sean O'Greedy, Amadore Condimento, Hung Phat, Lotus Petal, Cherry Blossom, Al Capella, and Hai Chu which was explained. There was nothing overly great in the comedy outside of the pun names and situation. Once you get past that, the fun is over.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

An endearing film
This movie is very endearing.

You can tell that the filmmakers really love the Godfathers and other Italian mafia movies growing up as well as the love for Hong Kong Cinema. The thing I appreciate the most about the film is the fact that they took away the brutality of mafia mob films smuggling and killing people to smuggling spices and olive oil. We were laughing the whole time when Vinny tried to launder Olive Oil in Chinatown. Come on, if it's vegetable oil, no problem son, not Olive Oil. And the 30 percent discount at the deli is hilarious. The actor who played Hung Phat is a Hong KongTVB legend doing his iconic legendary villain laugh brought me back to my childhood memories watching all those Hong Kong fantasy martial arts series.

Vinny character is also very sincere and the actor is very likable.

The movie did make me giggle throughout and I can see the love of the filmmakers honoring the homage of what they loved in the old school cinema.

If you look for a fun, entertaining film which can help you relax after a long day at work. This is it. Have some Chinese take out with Tiger beers or some salami with red wine , then you will have an awesome time.

end of year students project....
matdkt13 May 2021
Bad from a to z, its very cool kids can have fun with a camera, but this should stay private. Actually i already have a nephew so it felt i had a second one suddenly. Just way more stupid, and with no talent whatsoever, he would be the familys shame.

Turns out the racist jokes in the movie aren't parodies.
helpmepassschool20 August 2021
The good news: the actors, martial artists, and editors did the best with the script that they had. The editing, stunts, and overall plot was a good parody of old Hong Kong kung fu movies and Italian mobster movies.

The bad news: after hearing the white men in the cast and crew speak, I'm certain that they think they're parodying racist stereotypes when they're, in fact, perpetuating them. As one of the few Asian Americans (or the Orientals, as one cast member calls us) in the audience, I had the pleasure of listening to a bunch of white men pat each other on the back about how they didn't cross the line into racist jokes while also going on about a hilarious Asian-men-have-small-members joke. Then the same guys spent 5 minutes talking about how we can't "laugh at these things anymore". The moderator, another lovely white gentleman who has studied martial arts for many years, was quick to remind everyone how he goes to Chinatown every week and that he trained with "brothers" (black men) back in the day. He wasn't sure how the "brothers" got into the dojo since they didn't speak Mandarin and he did. Mind you, none of these details had anything to do with the movie. After listening to back-to-back rants about how much these people appreciated kung fu and how the Triad still runs Chinatown (Jesus Christ.), I decided that it was time to let boomers be boomers and left.

Better than I expected
Jtran927029 January 2022
Tbh I really need more of Lawrence's fabulously flamboyant kung fu. And though the acting is horrendous, the writing does make up for it. Worth a watch.

A fun film with something for everyone
aidanfrancis-1977321 May 2021
This movie is a true family film that can appeal to so many tastes and interests, e.g., mafia movie buffs, martial arts fans, comedy lovers, etc. The action was really well done and the parody of the mob was hysterical! Great summer flick!

Great Mob / Kung-fu Rom-com mashup comedy!
vFilmsFan29 July 2021
Made in Chinatown is surprisingly good. You would think its a mob film with kung-fu, but it is so much more!! One could say it is a love story or a story of coming to terms with being an outsider. It tackles these themes while spoofing the mob and kung-fu film genres. And they got classic genre actors to do it. The surprise is how good Jay Kwon in as the lead (Vinny Chow), and amazing talent of "Lawrence" the gay black actor who is really a karate master, and the amazing Raymond Barry digging deep into his theater and film roles to pull of the silliest of lines with the straightest of face. Made in Chinatown is a fun romp that leaves you with a full heart at its conclusion.

It's a Woody Allen Kung-Fu Movie
herbork17 February 2022
Imagine if Nineteen-Seventies' Woody Allen made a hip New York City comedy about a turf war between Mafia wise guys and kung-fu Triad gangsters fighting for control of... (wait for it) condiments. Throw in a clueless but sincere Chinese boy who wants to become an Italian wise guy so the girl he loves will love him back. Now welcome a cast of classic gangster-movie tough guys pitted against legendary Chinese kung-fu movie stars. "Made in Chinatown" writer/producer Mark Wiley is my close friend, a frequent business associate over the years, and I was briefly cast as the Commissioner in this movie. Even so, cineastes, enjoy this show, which is smart as a whip and gloriously corny all at once, and introduces, in Mark Wiley, a major new talent. Kirk out.

Brilliant old school Kung fu meets the Mob
teabosstea22 May 2021
Back in the day New York city had two fascinating cultural phenomenon that captured the public imagination, one was Kung Fu culture brought by cats like Bruce Lee to America. The other was the new york city mob.

In Made in Chinatown you will see the intersection of these two worlds in a hilarious and touching cross over of a classic rock em sock em kungfu Flic paired with an off the wall mob story which ties together all of the major crime families active in the 70s and 80s.

If you dig Kung fu and mob comedy, you can't miss this.

I purchased a copy when it was released and have already watched it with my family several times.

Awesomesauce!!

Great movie! Funny and original. The cast did a great job portraying their characters. I would definitely watch another movie from this director and I recommend it. Robert Samuels did a great job with this cinematic art piece capturing Kung fu meets the mob. I love it!

Very entertaining!!!
amoghrajanna23 May 2021
Very funny and entertaining movie. It all works out for good in the end. Vinny becomes the hero or 'last man standing' as the Italian Mob leaders get arrested and their operations busted. He does make the good choice of choosing May at the end of the movie. For the comedy genre, the movie is definitely good.

A Field of Easter Eggs
bigmanfan31 May 2021
It wasn't until the 2nd watching that I started seeing all the Easter eggs in this film. Twisted lines from The Godfather, Donnie Brasco, Goodfellas, Bruce Lee, Zen and more. Images and props from other films. The writer did a great job smashing stereotypes by directing fun at them, not playin on them. He actors played their parts straight, with silly dialogue. I think this is the first time these two genres have been mixed, and at the core is a story of self-identity and love. Really good. Not a 10, but sure to be a Cult Classic and a study for film students for decades to come.

Smart Parody
tambulimedia24 May 2021
This is neither a mob movie nor a kung-fu movie. It is the 'education of the young man" with some action. Beneath the surface of its obvious spoof on wiseguy and kung-fu movies, is a study in identity and self-realization. What does it mean to be a man and are Asian-Americans really able to fit into the broader American society? It's smart parody, when the traditional Chinese Triad boss chooses to quote a fake Chinese sage, Charlie Chan, over Confucius; and when the Chinese mother says to her son, "Vincent, what happened to your Chinese accent?" The punch lines run deep into dispelling stereotypes, not fostering them. Enjoy this film. It takes several viewings to get all the imbedded references and its deeper meanings. Well done!

Enjoyed it very much - great watch
ampkingofkungfu13 May 2021
I have to say what a great performance from all involved, loved the story, the interaction between the gangs in Chinatown was great to see and moved the mix of cultures coming together.

Funny, some great action and I recommended for anyone who loves independent movies, watching them grow from strength to strength.

Massive shout out to the actors, crew and everyone involved. R4 films, Robert Samuels, Robert Jefferson and the rest - keep an eye out because they are making big noise at the moment.
