The movies that leave an aftertaste, that shake your pre-concieved notions and especially the ones that make you think, those are the ones worth the time. Kottayam is one such film! Irrespective of your taste in films, you would still leave the theatre satisfied. There is something for everyone here, the locations, screenplay, performances and thrilling storyline collectively draws you in. Check it out in theatres for an experience that will leave you introspecting...

Taut thriller and arresting visuals

If you're a sucker for thrillers and good cinematography this is the movie for you. From the very first frame of the blue night sky and the hills Binu Bhaskar establishes himself as a fantastic cinematographer, however in no time you'll realise how good a director he is as well. Though it starts off as a murder mystery it goes much deeper and covers a gamut of topics including exploitation of mother earth (symbolically also shown thru the exploitation of a woman), displacement of natives from their own land, arrival of outsiders to Kerala, acculturation etc... Anything more about the plot would be a spoiler. Special mention to the screen writer for the non-linear narrative which is a bit confusing at the beginning but by the second act everything falls in place. The movie also leaves a lot to the interpretation of the audience and may result in several discussions once they leave the cinema hall, which in itself is an achievement by the writers. Special mention to the fantastic cast, the background music and editing. Watch it and you won't be disappointed

A thriller of emotions that journeys from man to nature.
proquik1 March 2020
A completely different movie from recent times that takes us on a mysterious journey through human emotions against a storyline of a thriller. While Iam not giving out much about the story, will say for a first time set of movie makers this is brilliant, the pace is gripping though a tidy slow but that goes with the mood of the movie and the twists weaved together in this thriller holds us in suspense and leads to delivering different messages and yes, it also leaves much to interpretation. But then Kottayam is a mystery yet with hidden clues to many human emotions through jealousy, anger, love, pain, betrayal and reckless wanting that destroys our relationships with each other and nature.

The cinematography with the starry night sky and foggy damp mountains from Kottayam to the northeast is brilliant. Seeing the location around Arunachal brought back memories of a bike ride I did around there and surely the team has put a lot of logistical effort as these places are almost unreachable. The final visuals are worth all that. The wonderful music score blends well into the scenes and all in all adds to the good production, script and direction of this movie. For non Malayalee's, this movie has english subtitles.
