Main Plot Still Not Moving
ecatalan989 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Despite being nothing short of amazing, last week's episode ("Free Will"), did little to move the story forward. This week's episode still keeps this season stuck in events that "seem" to put the story in an apparent stand still. While always fun to watch, this season of Outlander still hasn't found its stride. The only part that could actually take off in an interesting way is Claire's medical knowledge and how it could affect colonial America. There's a slight hint at this when Claire finds a pamphlet being passed around with some of her gynecological knowledge (under a pseudonym). The implications of her medical knowledge will be interesting to watch.

Outlander's showrunners want us to believe this season is heading to the inevitable clash between Jamie and Murtagh's band of regulators. Maybe they have something else in mind.

Trouble in Brownsville

Warning: Spoilers
There is not much to say about The Company We Keep other than that is a solid episode that continues to build upon the themes found earlier in the season. The thing that Season 5 does so well is that it is so incredibly compact. All twelve episodes center around the same themes and pose similar issues such that you never feel that an episode is out of place or doesn't belong. Again, I think this is an incredible achievement since Fiery Cross kind of plods along with different events that don't exactly connect as well together (in fact one of the major plot points, the Jacobite gold story is largely ignored for the tv series, at no great loss I might add).

So rather than go on about the episode, I want to take a brief moment to credit Lauren Lyle and the showrunners as a whole in giving Marsali a greater role in Season 5. Her performances have been exemplary for the limited time she's been on screen up to now and she is certainly worthy of having a greater part in the story. In the books, Marsali does become a more prevalent character, but more so in the latter books. She was always an interesting character because in some ways, she exemplifies what makes the latter half of the Outlander books good, the idea of having people in your family who are not of you blood, but who nonetheless love and are willing to sacrifice themselves for you. I mean, this is Laghorie's daughter, the same Laghorie who tried to have Claire killed as a witch, and yet her eldest daughter in many ways gets raised by and cared for by Claire as a daughter. The fact that a character like Marsali is given a chance to do more than in the book shows how the tv series can at times be better than the book, much in the same way that it improved upon the source material by giving Murtagh a greater role.

Episode 4

Warning: Spoilers
Pretty good, but still waiting for that big moment in Season 5. Everything feels a little too laid back, which is odd considering we are ahead of wartime.

What Would You Do For Love?

Lots of loving, tender moments in this episode for me! Lauren Lyle (Marsali) and Sam Heughan (Jamie) continue to be the talent front runners for me in Season 5. Caitriona Balfe (Claire) and Jon Tarcy (Isaiah) also have strong performances in this episode.

Production, Acting, Casting, Directing ... continues to be stellar this season!

If you have not binge watch Outlander to get caught up so you can watch this season - take a weekend and do it! This show is getting better and better and better! Sam Heughan can't be more outstanding! His performances in each and every scene is note worthy! Give this guy an Emmy already! Also high praise to the casting director on this show. Every actor they bring on to the show is outstanding. Standout is Paul Gorman who is playing twin brothers Josiah &, Kezzie Beardsley - he is doing incredible work.

No fault to be found

Warning: Spoilers
This season just keeps getting better. Casting is right on--the Beardsley twins and Lionel Brown are exactly as I envisioned them when reading The Firey Cross. Marsali becomes more endearing with each episode. I didn't like the actress much in past seasons, but she is really coming into her own. Jamie (Sam) is great, as always; made me tear up, once again, when he suggested they could keep the baby. This show is an emotional roller coaster.

Loved it. Loved it when Jamie was dancing. The ending escape , when the horses took off was the best.

504 is soooooo good!
iluvbear278 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
504 is yet another very powerful episode. 4 for 4 this season!! 504 is staying true to the book and central to its main characters, but leaving room to inter-weave other characters. Well balanced and directed! Love that it shows the building relationship between Bre and Marsali. Bonnet is leaving traces without an actual on-screen presence, you can feel the trepidation. Love that Claire is back to narrating the story. A very strong season indeed!

The Browns

Outlander S5E4 introduced the Brown family and continues a solid adaptation of The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon.

Sam Heughan 🙌
bellajean-4271712 March 2020
Sam Heughan continues to own another Episode of Outlander. He captures the heart soul & spirit of A Warrior Hero Leader Father Husband #JamieFraser he adopts the mannerisms to tell the story & without him there is no Outlander to watch. Lauren Lyle is an outstanding Actress & brings so much in her role of Marsali. They don't use the character of Fergus enough. Caitriona Balfe is an average actress at best but definitely not the Star or the attraction of Outlander

Filler episode
sja-awesome3 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Let's continue to push how much Jamie doesn't respect or think Roger is a man. Even though in the past episodes I highly doubt that Jamie would have dealt with things all that much different. But let keep that a recurring theme because it's super interesting to see Jamie put him down over and over. Then there's a whole nonsense about these two and their love bs. No.. One.. Cares... And then the twins and their random excuse to take clear back to Fraser's ridge. Or how about all the random drinking and dancing and singing that has nothing to do with anything! Nothing happens of any importance or vitality or interest in this episode at all. Zzzz.
