First-time novelists aren’t usually given cart blanche to adapt their own work, particularly when they have also never before produced anything for film or television. But longtime journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner, a longtime freelancer and now staff writer for The New York Times Magazine. After writing her bestselling “Fleishman Is in Trouble” in 2019, longtime producer Sarah Timberman fell in love with Brodesser-Akner’s writing. And so did everyone else. “I think she had like 24 offers (to adapt the book),” Timberman recalls, “and we just sort of pursued it doggedly and sent it to FX and they got on board really quick, and that’s where it began.” The result was the eight-part FX on Hulu limited series that starred Jesse Eisenberg, Lizzy Caplan and Claire Danes, earned consistently glowing reviews (87% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and landed seven Emmy nominations (including for Best Limited Series on which Timberman served as an...

It was perfectly fine for The View to talk about Hugh Grant and his scrotum resemblance during Thursday’s show. But bringing up his conduct on the Oscars beige carpet was apparently forbidden, angering a portion of its viewership.
Grant stopped in to the show to promote the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The actor talked about how nervous he was appearing as a presenter at the 2023 Academy Awards, where he reunited with Andie MacDowell, his costar in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
That’s where the scrotum joke came up.
“I was nervous. I wrote that joke and I was extremely nervous about it. I think I got away with it,” Grant said, referring to his comment that he looked like “basically a scrotum” when compared to MacDowell’s unlined complexion. “Sigourney Weaver said to me afterwards, ‘You don’t look like a scrotum,’ and she liked the joke,...

There’s always a reckoning. There has to be. A studio chief tells me that next awards season they’re going to recalibrate how they screen to voters “because there are a bunch of movies that people did not bother to see. Good movies that people did not watch because they were drawn to the noise. And the noise won.”

The 2023 Oscars were full of laughs, tears and cheers throughout the night from the presenters, winners, host and Hollywood audience. From host Jimmy Kimmel‘s slapgate jokes to Michelle Yeoh making history with her best actress win amid a big night for best picture Everything Everywhere All at Once, here are some of the night’s most memorable moments.
Host Jimmy Kimmel Mocks Will Smith’s Oscars Slap
Host Jimmy Kimmel had a lot to say about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during last year’s Academy Awards ceremony. His jokes started during the opening monologue of the Oscars telecast, with Kimmel alluding to the infamous moment while recognizing the Irish performers who were attending. “Five Irish actors are nominated tonight, which means the odds of another fight on stage went way up,” Kimmel quipped. Almost one full year after the slap heard — and seen — round the world at last year’s Oscars, the incident between Chris Rock and Will Smith was obviously the elephant in the room at Sunday night’s ceremony. And of course, this year’s Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel went right for it.
Well, not right for it. It actually took the host most of his monologue to get a slap joke in. In fact, it seemed for a bit that he might pull his punches, when he only made a fairly tame joke about the chances of a fight happening, referring to the cast of “The Banshees of Inisherin.”
“Five Irish actors are nominated, which means, the odds of another fight on stage just went way up,” Kimmel joked.

Winning an Oscar is among one of the highest honors in Hollywood and a goal many stars aspire to achieve. At last year's ceremony, we witnessed history when Ariana DeBose won for best actress in a supporting role for "West Side Story," making her the first Afro-Latina to win an acting Oscar. Will Smith also officially became an Oscar winner when he took home the trophy for best actor in a leading role for his performance in "King Richard."
This year, Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Colin Farrell, and Angela Bassett are among the many actors who scored nominations for their work. Rihanna - who is set to perform at the March 12 ceremony following her headline-making Super Bowl performance - also received her very first nomination for her song "Lift Me Up" from the "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" soundtrack. Meanwhile, fan-favorite movies include "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Avatar: The Way of Water.

Taking Toei
Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund Public Investment Fund (Pif) has increased its stake in Japanese film and TV studio Toei Company, from 5% to 6.03%, according to a report by the Reuters financial news agency. The move comes shortly after Toei published a ten-year plan for international expansion.
Toei includes film and TV production operations, the T-Joy cinema chain and Toei Animation. Last month, it said that it had beaten its film revenue record, thanks to the success of titles including “The First Slam Dunk,” “The Legend of Butterfly” and “One Piece Film Red.”
The stake increase also follows Pif’s February announcement that it had increased its stake in Japanese games and console maker Nintendo to 8.26% and that (along with the Singapore state fund Gic) was a buyer of a $966 million bond issue from Korean entertainment-tech firm Kakao Corp.

“Women Talking” has won the USC Libraries Scripter Award for adapted screenplay in a ceremony that took place on the USC campus in Los Angeles on Saturday night.
The Scripter Award goes to both the writer of an adapted screenplay and the author of the original material on which the screenplay was based, which meant that the award was given to writer-director Sarah Polley and novelist Miriam Toews, whose 2018 novel formed the basis for Polley’s film.
In the 34-year history of the Scripters, the winner has matched the Oscar winner 14 times, most of those in an eight-year streak between 2010 and 2017.
Other finalists were screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro for “Living,” based on Leo Tolstoy’s novella “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”; screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz and journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey for “She Said”; and Guillermo del Toro, Patrick McHale and Matthew Robbins for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” based on...

Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.
On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Sarah Jessica Parker is one of America’s most beloved performers. Her starring role in Sex and the City ensured her a place in pop culture history. Carey Mulligan was mistakenly announced as a BAFTA award winner during Sunday night’s ceremony.
The actress was incorrectly named as the winner of the Best Supporting Actress gong for her role in the MeToo movie “She Said”.
However, the award actually went to “The Banshees of Inisherin” actress Kerry Condon, the Independent reported.
The mistake was made after “Coda” star Troy Kotsur, who won the Best Supporting Actor award last year, presented the honour using sign language.
The sign language interpreter then mistakenly claimed Mulligan had won.

The Canadian hitmaker chats to Graham Norton on the latest episode of his talk show, with her saying of undergoing open-throat surgery in 2018: “The operation was very invasive, and I’ve got a big scar that I am proud of.
“I’m very happy to have a scar rather than no voice. The surgery was a miracle, and I am so grateful. Going back into a studio after the operation was a discovery and I was re-learning voice. I can get very loud and now I can swear really loudly!”

Sheri Easterling paraded around her new young boyfriend, the rapper Yung Gravy and got some attention with a Pda on the red carpet of the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards.
Easterling is the mother of the influencer Addison Rae and split from her husband Monty Lopez after allegations he had an affair with a young woman.
Easterling may be going for a little old-fashioned revenge, or Easterling, 42, is just smitten with her new boyfriend, whose full name is Matthew Raymond Hauri, 26. Hauri wasn’t nominated in the show, but his profile as a rapper has been slowly rising over the past few years.
Hauri opened up about the relationship in a red carpet interview. “We met online and we connected right away,” he said. “You know, I’m from the furthest north it gets, and she’s from the furthest south it gets.”

Short-format Drama
Ghy Culture & Media, a mainland China-focused entertainment company from Singapore, has launched a slate of short drama series that it says mirror the professionally-generated short format developed by Chinese platforms Douyin and Bilibili. Its first three are fantasy “Goddess Hotel,” urban fantasy-light comedy “Miss Tanya” and sci-fi comedy “Ability Bureau.” Each short drama series is slated to run for 2 or 3 seasons, with 12 to 16 episodes per season, and each episode delivered at approximately 3 minutes. Involving Singapore production teams and actors, each project is estimated to cost between S350,000 to S1.6 million to produce. Ghy describes the slate as Singapore-China collaborations, but it does not disclose if there is a Chinese co-producer. Instead, it reveals that they will be simultaneously released on Douyin and TikTok, Douyin’s global English counterpart, with versions in English, Bahasa Indonesian and Thai. Ghy says that it aims to establish a cultural bridge between Singapore,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says it will take a few weeks to figure out an appropriate way to respond to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. But on Wednesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel came up with several creative punishments the Academy could consider.
Of course, he also wants to know why on earth it’s going to take so long to complete the investigation.
“Unless you’ve been living under a Chris Rock, you know the story. We all do. People living in igloos know the story. But the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, they’re not jumping to any conclusions. They have begun what they call their ‘official review,'” Kimmel said during his monologue.
“The President and CEO of the Academy sent a letter to members that says it will take them a few weeks to complete their investigation of this incident.

Update, with video Tina Fey and Amy Poehler opened tonight’s Golden Globe Awards from opposite coasts, a Covid-era necessity that should probably earn the duo a battle pay bonus. Telling jokes to masked, scarcely populated live audiences, Fey and Poehler likely scored more sympathy than laughs.
Fey, appearing from New York’s Rainbow Room in 30 Rock, and Poehler, from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, entered the split-screen stage from either side, joining in the virtual middle and addressing the weird vibe almost immediately: As Fey reached toward Poehler, a disembodied arm appeared on Poehler’s half of the screen.
“The technology is so great that you’ll never be able to tell the difference,” Poehler joked. With the Beverly Hills Hotel done up in the Rainbow Room’s iconic gold-and-black Art Deco style, she was less off the mark with that comment than some of the punchlines that came after.
