I'm hooked.

Naturally ee see the ugly side of War, with some truly cruel acts, not just the large scale atrocities, but the small, minor acts of cruelty commited by the Nazis.

The show is selecting someone from a particular group the Nazis would have persecuted, the gay men in love, the family with the girl who has fits.

It's a lavish drama, it looks incredible, it's clearly big budget. The acting is excellent, if I'm honest it's Lesley Manville that stands out for me, she's so often a nice character, great to see her playing such a stoic figure.

I'm really enjoying it. 8/10

Episode 1.2

Harry arrives back home in Britain with a refugee in tow. His mother is not pleased and knows there is something more as to how he chose this particular boy.

Harry is cut down to size in the Foreign Office. He might be idealistic and naive but his boss just thinks he is stupid and not cut out for the Foreign Office. It is hard to disagree with his boss. Even Lois knows Harry has been a naughty boy in Poland.

The harrowing scenes are the Nazis brutality in Poland since they invaded the country. Kasia sees her mother killed, she watches Jews being persecuted. A Pole throws some scissors in the street so the Nazi soldiers can cut off the beard of an elderly Jewish man.

The standout performances is the icy cold one from Lesley Manville. I am sure Harry is itching to find out what really did happen to his father.

It does look like an expensive production as we see Kasia being chased in the rubble of Warsaw.

Helen Hunt's character so far is there to point out the rise of the Nazis in her broadcasts.

Let down after a good start

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed the first episode and couldn't wait for the second, bad mistake, the storylines went downhill rapidly, For a starter the idea a factory girl with good northern values would suddenly decide on a pointless sex romp in the back of a car(just to get it out of her system as she explains)is just to out of character, The story in Paris of a relationship is pointless and irrelevant to the whole episode. The young Polish boy refugee would have most certainly been put into local care not kept as an unwelcome guest in the Manor house.I could go on about the Polish resistance parts but feel I won't. I will see how the third instalment goes before deciding if it's worth watching them all.
