T.J. Newman was working as a flight attendant on the Virgin Airlines redeye flight from Los Angeles to New York when she had the idea for her debut novel Falling. That action thriller became a bestseller and was followed by Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421, which also became a bestseller. Film adaptations of both Falling and Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421 are already in the works – and now Deadline reports that the film rights to Newman’s third novel, Worst Case Scenario, are about to go up for auction.
Newman couldn’t get a lot of people interested in Falling at first. She was rejected by more than forty different agents. But then Shane Salerno and The Story Factory signed her, and her luck turned around in a major way. Exclusive: T. J. Newman, the flight attendant who hung up her wings to become the bestselling author of the movie-bound action thriller novels Falling and Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421, is catching her next flight with Little Brown.
In a publishing industry shocker, Newman has left Simon & Schuster and signed a new multimillion-dollar mega deal with Little Brown. Newman’s first novel for the publisher is called Worst Case Scenario, which debuts August 13. Screen rights will be auctioned before the novel gets a big push from Little Brown. Newman stays in her wheelhouse – it all starts with a commercial flight – but the book veers into tentpole territory that might draw comparisons to Independence Day or War of the Worlds-meets-Chernobyl. The action surrounds mankind preventing an extinction-level disaster.

Actor Viggo Mortensen goes back behind the camera for the upcoming western, The Dead Don’t Hurt. Here’s a new trailer:
Viggo Mortensen made his directorial debut in 2020 with Falling, a drama about a fractious relationship between a father and son. He wrote the script and also starred alongside Lance Henriksen and Laura Linney.
Mortensen may be better known for intense performances in films like A History Of Violence, Eastern Promises, A Dangerous Method (all made with director David Cronenberg) and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, but in recent years he’s built up a career behind the camera.
He’s now set to direct his second film, a western called The Dead Don’t Hurt. The synopsis reads as follows:
A story of star-crossed lovers on the western U.S. frontier in the 1860s. Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) is a fiercely independent woman who embarks on a relationship...

The Dead Don’t Hurt: Viggo Mortensen is out for vengeance in trailer for Western he wrote & directed
Shout! Studios have released the first trailer for The Dead Don’t Hurt, a Western starring Viggo Mortensen, who also wrote, directed, produced, and composed the music for the film.
As a big Western fan, I’m always eager to check out a new entry in the genre, and it looks like I’ll have to check out The Dead Don’t Hurt, as the trailer paints a dark, gritty story with some powerful performances. The film follows Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), a fiercely independent woman who starts a relationship with Holgen Olsen (Mortenson), a Danish immigrant. They start a life together, but when Olsen leaves to fight in the Civil War, Vivenne is left to fend for herself.
This marks Mortenson’s second time behind the camera, as he made his feature directorial debut with Falling, a 2020 drama which followed a middle-aged gay man who moves his homophobic father (Lance Henriksen...

"I never wanted to be saved..." Shout Studios has revealed an official trailer for an indie western titled The Dead Don't Hurt, written and directed by and also starring Viggo Mortensen (directing his second film following Falling). This first premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia in Mexico. Set in the 1860s, fiercely independent French Canadian Vivienne Le Coudy embarks on a relationship with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen. When he leaves to fight in the Civil War, she must fend for herself in lawless town run by ruthless criminals. Vicky Krieps stars as Vivienne, joined by Viggo Mortensen, Danny Huston, Garrett Dillahunt, and Solly McLeod. Both a tragic love story and a nuanced depiction of the conflict between revenge and forgiveness, Mortensen's The Dead Don’t Hurt is a portrait of a passionate woman determined to stand up...

Viggo Mortensen loves him a good Western. The actor has starred in several of them, 2008’s “Appaloosa,” 2004’s “Hidalgo,” and even more recent arthouse international films like “Jauja” and “Far from Men” employ elements of this genre. Mortensen has also moved into writing and directing features in recent years, following the critically-acclaimed “Falling,” and so his next directorial effort, “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” is also returning to the dangerous Western frontier.

Viggo Mortensen really puts the word multi-hyphenate to good use for his second directorial effort The Dead Don’t Hurt as he also wrote, co-stars in and composes the music for this distinctive Western film, which played at the Glasgow Film Festival earlier this week after world premiering to critical acclaim at the Toronto Film Festival last year.
The film, which was acquired for the U.S. by Shout! The Fast and Furious franchise talks a big game about family but doesn’t seem to care about much besides the action sequences. They just get too chaotic for my taste, but the new film Sixty Minutes is more ordered in its approach to having a frenetic action film that has a genuine familial core. There are a few issues as to how it uses a father-daughter relationship, but ultimately it is a well-crafted action thriller that might feel like Run Lola Run meets Falling Down sans the insane Michael Douglas and the time travel stuff.

Fans are now circulating the first photo of Harry in 2024, and they can’t help noticing that he appears to be growing out his hair.

There's nothing Hollywood loves more than a snappy, propulsive, made-for-movies book premise from some of the most exciting authors around. Just in the last decade alone, we've seen writer Andy Weir parlay the breakout success of his debut work "The Martian" and its 2015 adaptation by director Ridley Scott into another upcoming movie deal, this time headlined by filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. More recently, "Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn has had "Sharp Objects" turned into a major HBO series, while she teamed up with no less a talent than Steve McQueen to adapt the British TV series "Widows" into one of the most brilliant, under-appreciated thrillers of the last several years. Now, movie fans would be well advised to remember the name T.J. Newman, who appears ready to become the next big name-brand novelist around.

Earlier this year, we heard that Warner Bros. had come out the winner of an intense bidding war over the film rights to author T.J. Newman’s second novel, Drowning: The Rescue Of Flight 1421 (you can pick up a copy at This Link). Now Deadline reports that Paul Greengrass – whose credits include The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, Jason Bourne, United 93, 22 July, Green Zone, Captain Phillips, and News of the World – has signed on to write, direct, and produce the film adaptation of Drowning.
Newman’s novel tells the following story: A plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean six minutes after takeoff and is flooded after an explosion during evacuation. A dozen survivors sink in a sealed part of the aircraft as it perches precariously on an undersea cliff 200 feet below the surface. Among them is an engineer and his 11-year-old daughter. Paul Greengrass has been hired to adapt the big-screen version of T.J. Newman’s novel “Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421.”
Greengrass will write, direct and produce the film, which is set at Warner Bros. The studio emerged victorious earlier this year in a bidding war, one that drew interest from the likes of Nicole Kidman, Alfonso Cuarón and Steven Spielberg, along with seven-figure offers from Apple and Bruckheimer, Paramount and Damien Chazelle, Legendary and Universal Television.
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy prevailed after agreeing to pay $1.5 million for the rights and an additional $1.5 million on the first day of production. The studio also brought the “Drowning” author on as an executive producer.

Jorja Smith Isn’T One to blindly follow her intuition. Sure, her gut has led her to some very good decisions, like the one she made in 2015 to move to London and pursue a career in music shortly after graduating high school. Within just a few years, the British singer and songwriter had star-making guest appearances with Drake and Kendrick Lamar, a coveted spot on the short list for the Mercury Prize, and a Best New Artist nomination at the 2019 Grammy Awards, next to acts like Dua Lipa and Luke Combs.

Toronto — When the crowd settles in, the lights go down and the movie starts, this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is more or less business as usual.
The rest of the time, not so much.
This is a TIFF with fewer stars, fewer studio movies and more films up for sale but fewer buyers willing to commit during the writers’ and actors’ strikes. That’s a distinctly different beast from the TIFF that would normally host a parade of movie stars on an array of red carpets every day, particularly during the opening weekend that concludes on Sunday.
And yet, this year’s festival has had a familiar assortment of potential awards movies, crowd-pleasers, bold indies, star vehicles, international projects and weirdo midnight romps. And in the theaters when those movies play, the number of movie stars in the seats can be beside the point for at least a couple of hours.

Plot: In the Old West, a Danish carpenter (Viggo Mortensen) falls in love with a French Canadian flower seller (Vicky Krieps). They resettle in a Nevada town, but when he goes off to fight in the Civil War, she must find a way to exist in their corrupt and violent environment, with the town lorded over by a land baron (Garret Dillahunt), his psychotic son (Solly McLeod) and a weasely mayor (Danny Huston).

Viggo Mortensen’s first feature as a director, 2020’s “Falling,” was in some ways an exercise in rigorous, controlled filmmaking, a family drama that jumped between generations to tell a subtle but explosive story about age, memory and forgiveness. But his second film, “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” which premiered on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival, is something entirely different. It’s still controlled, to be sure, but simultaneously controlled and freewheeling, a period Western that introduces cliches only to subvert or twist them.
It jumps around in time in a purposeful use of misdirection, and it’s a Western that gives the Old West – in this case, Nevada in the 1860s – a healthy population of immigrants, from the Danish sheriff Holger Olsen (Mortensen) to his partner (not wife) Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), who speaks French but answers his question, “Where are you from?” with a blunt, “I am American.

The western genre has been so pervasive throughout the entire history of the movies, and it is hard to imagine doing anything in it that hasn’t already been done. Viggo Mortensen, in writing, directing, producing and co-starring in only his second film behind the camera (after 2020’s Falling) finds a moving, if tragic, love story to play against the stunning landscape of the circa-1860s West, and somehow it all feels new. John Ford and Howard Hawks would love this movie.
The Dead Don’t Hurt is a title that promises something else, but without giving away spoilers, it ultimately feels right for this story of Holder Olsen (Mortensen), a Danish immigrant who falls hard for Vivienne Le Coudy (a luminous Vicky Krieps), who he meets in San Francisco. Wanting some quiet peace in his life, they move together to Elk Flats, Nevada, and start what appears to be an idyllic life together.

Viggo Mortensen’s second feature as a director, the Western The Dead Don’t Hurt, is dedicated to his late mother, Grace Gamble Atkinson, who poetically lives on somewhat in the film’s lead character, the fiercely independent Vivienne Le Coudy, played by Vicky Krieps.
“Vivienne, she’s no wonder woman. But she’s very strong, has an inner strength, even though she has to suffer abuses. She’s a woman of her time. Yes, there’s a strength of character, not that they look similar,” Mortensen says of Krieps and his mother, who inspired the original story for the film when an image of Gamble Atkinson as a little girl came to the Lord of the Rings star while at his writing desk during the pandemic.

Vicky Krieps and Viggo Mortensen are unleashing original Western film “The Dead Don’t Hurt” this fall festival season.
Slated as a feminist take on the genre, “The Dead Don’t Hurt” is premiering at 2023 TIFF and marks lead star Mortensen’s sophomore effort as a director following his 2020 debut “Falling.” The logline for “The Dead Don’t Hurt” teases that Mortensen and Krieps “try and survive the corruption in a tough Nevada town” in the 1860s. Mortensen writes, directs, and acts in the film centered on two immigrants forging a new life on the frontier.
The full synopsis reads: “French-Canadian flower seller Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps) and Danish carpenter Holger Olsen (Mortensen) meet in San Francisco.
Vivienne is irreverent, fiercely independent, and refuses to wed, but agrees to travel with Holger to his home near the quiet town of Elk Flats, Nevada. The National’s Bryce Dessner has detailed his new soundtrack for the upcoming absurdist comedy She Came to Me starring Peter Dinklage. Out September 29th via Warner Classics and Unigram, the album features an original song from Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa called “Addicted to Romance.”
According to a press release, She Came to Me director Rebecca Miller said the soundtrack came from an “intimate process” of collaboration with Dessner, who boarded the film during its earliest stages. This was especially important since the album had to incorporate two on-screen operas from the movie. Conducted by André de Ridder, the score features contributions from French pianist Katia Labèque and vocals from Greer Grimsley, Alicia Hall Moran, Isabel Leonard, and Emmett O’Hanlon.
In a statement, Dessner described the film as “one of the most rewarding and creative experiences I have had” and said it allowed him to “make the music that I wanted to make,...

What does it mean to be one of the “hottest” or “buzziest” titles in a film festival sales market if there’s no stars drum up that excitement? Or if there’s little likelihood of an all-night bidding war by a streamer spending in the 7-figures to land their next Oscar contender?
As we reported earlier today, those are all ways in which the strike threatens to weigh on the film markets at Venice, Telluride, and Toronto. A handful of those films are directorial debuts by famous actors-turned-filmmakers, and some even have interim agreements from SAG-AFTRA that will let them promote. But all these films should stand on their own merits and could catch the eyes of the many non-amptp distributors that need creative ways to fill out their slates.

When Julee Cruise died last year on June 9, David Lynch fans lost another of the essential, even inextricable collaborators who became a part of their lives as a result of being part of his art. Her ethereal singing is synonymous with both “Blue Velvet” and the many incarnations of “Twin Peaks,” the latter of whose title theme she performed. If Cruise’s absence from the physical plane runs the risk of dimming her star in our collective memories, Sacred Bones’ vinyl reissue of her 1989 album “Floating Into the Night” offers a welcome opportunity to restore it to its full luster by letting listeners experience her work anew — carrying the legacy of her and Lynch’s historic collaboration, but unencumbered by the images he paired with her music.

Jorja Smith has confirmed her long-awaited sophomore album. It’s called falling or flying, and it’s slated for release on September 29th via Famm.
Blending elements of jazz, R&b, and funky house music, falling or flying touches on topics like breakups, old friendships, and looking inwards towards yourself. Smith gratefully took the early stages of the pandemic as an opportunity to slow down and re-connect with herself, and the result promises to be her deepest and most mature work yet.
“I don’t slow down enough,” Smith said in a statement. “This album is like my brain. There’s always so much going on but each song is definitely a standstill moment… This is the first time I’m putting stuff out there that I can connect with right now.”

Three years ago, T.J. Newman was handing out peanuts and pouring drinks for airplane passengers. Last month, she was hustling between Zoom calls with Nicole Kidman and Jerry Bruckheimer as they tried to outbid each other for the rights to “Drowning,” her upcoming novel about a jetliner that crashes into the ocean. It’s all part of an improbable Cinderella story that’s taken Newman, a flight attendant-turned-bestselling writer, from manning first-class cabins to becoming one of Hollywood’s most in-demand talents.
Newman admits she still hasn’t accepted her change in fortunes. “Any time I board a plane, I still want to get up and collect trash or help someone put their bag in an overhead bin,” she says. “I have to remind myself: You can sit and order a drink instead of serving it.”

Last week, we heard that author T.J. Newman is writing the screenplay for the film adaptation of her debut novel Falling (pick up a copy Here), a project which is set up at Universal Pictures. Now Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has come out the winner of an intense bidding war over the film rights to Newman’s second novel, Drowning.
Newman was working as a flight attendant on the Virgin Airlines redeye flight from Los Angeles to New York when she had the idea for Falling, which tells the story of an airplane pilot whose family has been kidnapped – and the kidnapper says his family will only be released if he crashes a plane with 143 passengers on board. Her second novel, which has the full title Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421, tells the following story: A plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean six minutes after takeoff and is flooded after an explosion during evacuation.

T.J. Newman was working as a flight attendant on the Virgin Airlines redeye flight from Los Angeles to New York when she had the idea for a novel she ended up calling Falling. She couldn’t get a lot of people interested in her story at first. She was rejected by more than forty different agents. Exclusive: Flight attendant-turned-tyro author T.J. Newman has been set to write the script for her debut bestselling novel Falling for Universal and Working Title. Now, her follow-up manuscript has leaked around town and could be the next hot auction title.
The new one is Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421, and it will be shopped imminently. A plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean six minutes after takeoff and is flooded after an explosion during evacuation. A dozen survivors sink in a sealed part of the aircraft as it perches precariously on an undersea cliff 200 feet below the surface. Among them is an engineer and his 11-year-old daughter. His estranged wife and the girl’s mother is part of the elite rescue team that races to save the passengers before their air runs out.
