Getting to Know the World Better
MamadNobari9723 April 2021
So, so far I can't give any episodes more than an 8 because nothing "mind blowing" or game changing has happened yet, but we're getting to know the characters better and introduced to some new ones, which is good.

And some interesting journeys have been made by 3 characters that I don't know their history and "real" motivation yet but I like them and root for them.

The pacing still feels a little too quick but I still rather watch an 8 thorough episode than a 24 episode season of fillers and stretched scenes.

Still hoping all these buildups mount to something great.

Into the fold

Enjoyable episode as Alina struggles to come into her own and the conductor leads an intrepid team into the fold. The storyline flowed well, the CGI was well done, and the costuming was impeccable.

Much Better Episode, The Plot Thickens
jimhaney-1222430 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There is something fun about seeing the rogue leader with a goat. :D. I enjoy that we get a glimpse of sneaky knife woman's motives, but then the story continues, not getting engulfed in something for another episode. Boy am I glad big ears isn't chasing down carriages this episode.

I really liked the creepy librarian, the actor hit that one out of the park. The psyched poison taster was pretty fun too. I didn't read the books, but if these zany characters originate from there, props to the author.

Heh, flying thing got skewered by a pointy stick WHERE WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN USEFUL (Part of my annoyance for ep. 1, doesn't bring this one down at all)

If I had to criticize something, it would be the whole 'take a detour, gambled away the buy money, put us all in peril, now I am going to complain to the people I screwed' thing with the gunslinger. This is a variant of that common trope where someone makes terrible decisions, its portrayed as endearing, and nobody pays the price. There was enough suspense going already, garnishing is just unnecessary, like putting boots on a duck.

Call Up The Sun
wandernn1-81-68327423 August 2021
Alina gets a bath in preparation for a meeting with THE KING.

So this General Kirigan seems like a real Billy BadAss. He introduces Alina to the King as the one who will save the world. Apparently she has a fairly unique ability to summon the power of the Sun.

The train scene where it's either sacrifice Tabitha, the goat, or Gunsling your way out was great. +1 Star

Haven't decided about Alina yet. 6/10.

A Light in the Darkness
SuperMari0s17 November 2023
"The Making at the Heart of the World", follows Alina Starkov, a young mapmaker who discovers she has a rare and powerful ability to summon light. She is taken to the Little Palace, where she meets the mysterious General Kirigan and the other Grisha, who are people with various magical talents. Alina has to adjust to her new life, learn to control her power, and face the dangers of a world divided by war and darkness.

The episode is well-paced and engaging, with stunning visuals and a captivating soundtrack. The cast delivers excellent performances, especially Jessie Mei Li as Alina and Ben Barnes as Kirigan. The episode also introduces some of the fan-favorite characters from the books, such as Genya, Zoya, and the Crows. The episode explores the themes of identity, belonging, and loyalty, as Alina struggles to find her place among the Grisha and to reconnect with her best friend Mal, who is still in the army. The episode also sets up the main conflict of the series, which is the threat of the Shadow Fold, a massive wall of darkness that splits the country of Ravka and is inhabited by deadly creatures.

The episode is a great adaptation of the source material, while also adding some original twists and surprises. It is a must-watch for fans of the books and newcomers alike, as it immerses the viewers in a rich and complex world of magic, politics, and romance. I would rate it 8/10.
