Satisfying and a good setup for more
aarongnr24 April 2021
The characters in this are all quite enjoyable. Whil cheesy at times, the dialogue overall is very well written and realistic.

This last episode resolved some of the hanging threads, like the stag storyline and it was really done quite well. I have not read the books, but the show does a good job establishing the lore and how the world functions.

The production value is very high. Not GoT level high, but certainly enough for me. The effects mostly look very good.

Overall I'd give this episode an 8.6 and the show overall a similar score, around 8.5. Recommended.

Amazing Adaptation!!!!!
kidcourageous_1624 April 2021
So damn good! Everyone has done an amazing job embodying the characters and capturing their essence, true to the books.

I really enjoyed the way they've combined both series and brought the characters together.

Also the foreshadowing!!! Please give us a second season!

Solid finale
Calicodreamin26 April 2021
A solid finale to shadow and bones S1, the major storylines were all brought together and left reasonably complete... and of course loose ends left to entice for a second season. Decent acting and great CGI work.

Shadow and Bone S1E8: A Symphony of Betrayals, Sacrifices, and the Birth of New Alliances
Vaynrat22 November 2023
"Shadow and Bone" Season 1, Episode 8, delivers an enthralling conclusion, earning a stellar 10/10 for its symphony of betrayals, sacrifices, and the emergence of unforeseen alliances. Nina and Matthias's journey takes a dramatic turn as Fedyor's pursuit forces Nina to make a gut-wrenching choice, sowing seeds of mistrust.

As Alina shields the ship with her radiant powers, the climactic crossing of the Fold unfolds, revealing Kirigan's ruthless expansion that engulfs West Ravka. The Lower Decks' revelation of Mal's presence ignites a plan, but unexpected twists escalate the confrontation, culminating in a gripping battle against Kirigan's forces.

Zoya's turning point and Alina's liberation from Kirigan's control mark a pivotal moment. The dynamic collaboration with the Crows adds layers to the narrative, leading to an epic showdown with far-reaching consequences.

The survivors emerge from the Fold, deciding to forge their paths separately. The wounded Kirigan's reappearance teases future challenges. Episode 8 is a triumphant finale, seamlessly weaving together plot threads, character arcs, and the promise of what lies ahead in the ever-expanding Grishaverse.

Kinda Underwhelmed
MamadNobari9727 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Well the episode - considering the whole season - isn't bad in itself but it was still underwhelming, the whole show is kinda underwhelming and this episode doesn't do crazy things to top other episodes.

The Fold had so much potential and they could've added some good horror and fantasy elements to the show but they just rather to show us dialogues after dialogues. I know the Volcra are the people that lived in that area, but still, they could've added more monsters and creatures into it and didn't have to be just like the book, and not even considering that, there are still animals and birds in that area right?

They could've showed lots of more creatures but it's just flying monster man from the start to finish. Makes The Fold just uninteresting when you see everything it has to offer just by watching the first episode.

Like is that why people are afraid to go through The Fold? Just some flying creatures? It's not like they shoot fire out of their mouth or anything. Grisha have impenetrable bulletproof Kefta for fck sake, and you're telling me they don't have the material or the metal to make a safe transport vehicle that the Volca can't penetrate?

Or even more, couldn't they send an army just shooting those things and destroy them?

Cause from the look of it, The Fold isn't even that big on map so there couldn't be a lot of people in there to have turned into Volcra.

And if you're saying "read the book dumbass, you'll see why they can't do all those things you said", well I'm not reading the book right? I'm watching the show and it doesn't tell me in 8 episodes why they can't do that. If Jesper can kill five or six Volcra in 10 seconds, what could an army with mini guns do to them?

If they at least showed us more threat and danger inside The Fold than just flying creature dudes, I would've been more worried when our characters went into it.

And so far I would say that one the few things that worked for me was the relationship of Matthias and Nina. It's not a crazy character development or anything, but it's enough to make you like them and care about them. I'm interested to see what they're gonna do with these two in the future. And obviously the gang of the three is also likable and it works.

The main villain tho, it's just your generic "black" bad guy that they at least could've given him more depth in the last episode but they didn't, so the train of clichés just keeps coming. And it was funny seeing Mal fighting and almost winning against this centuries old magic guy. It's like seeing Harley Quinn fighting Vandal Savage and almost winning!

Although it would be interesting to see what he's gonna do next now that he's bringing the Volcra with him outside of The Fold. Maybe they do better in season 2, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Overall, the season was pretty mediocre and had nothing new to show in this young adult fantasy genre and they didn't even explore their own lore and characters that much. So it's not a show that I would suggest to anyone and say watch this before you die it's amazing! Rather watch it if you have the time it's not that bad, and I'd give a 7.5 or 8 cause it's not horrible, just nothing new to see and a lot of lost potential.

Great until the ending
garabedian12327 September 2021
This ending basically ruined the whole show for me. Instead of just ending it. We get this long drawn out ending that does not end anything. ..

Why is the evil guy immortal? Its never explained. And now suddenly he is saying the light girl is immortal now too.?? How? When did that happen? But seriously how?

And if he is immortal then he is surely not dead, and the fold is still up and The light girl is now on the run with no intent on stopping the fold or anything really...THe end was right there. They could have just ended it...but instead opted to do the exact same ending several books later...im guessing here.

So nothing gets resolved...And Why did we follow Nina...yes I remember her name but no one elses. She had a nice story. But it does not tie into the plot at all. Basically 1/3 of the show goes nowhere because of Nina. And the thieves really did not play a big part either. So half the show goes nowhere...which is weird. But i liked it mostly.

They did Ben Barns so dirty.
zachcreaghcoen26 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There were many times throughout the season I wanted them to be more retaliated about the darkling. Whilst he did create the fold. It clearly wasn't because he's evil. It's because he was distraught from the death of his wife/Partner And felt the same could be coming from his entire family. I wish they had gone deeper into seeing his people slaughtered and taken advantage of over a millennia. It might just be Ben barns being a fantastic actor. But I feel like the character genuinely just wanted what's best for his people. The west ravkins had been selling out grisha to the fyrdens to be slaughtered. They were by no means good people. They even tried to have Alina assassinated because she could reunited the empire. I just feel they could have made it harder for the viewers to decide who is right or wrong not tell us who is right or wrong.

Excellent start to a fantasy series.
davedemerchant14 August 2022
This series has everything you could ask for from a fantasy series. Great pace, fantastic action, and phenomenal actors. Never read the books, but I might dig in to some of them now that this show has me hooked.

It can be a weekend binge watch. There is no filler episode here. It has typical Game of Thrones-esque writing, but you can expect that for any big budget show these days. The budget must be extensive, because the shots, sets, and locations are gorgeous.

I would recommend to anyone looking for a fantasy series that has well written characters, a fun plot, and a based magical system.

The ending was executed better in the books
ashleyb-685788 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The ending to Shadow and Bone was better in the books in my opinion because it was slightly darker where Mal actually didn't escape from his imprisonment and the Darkling was going to feed him to the volcra. To save Mal, Alina actually makes the decision of letting everyone on the skiff die after they failed to side with her and listen to her warnings about the Darkling. She does this by learning to use the Cut for the first time which destroys the skiff and then her and Mal escape by only having the light surround them. This perfectly foreshadows the internal struggle and character development Alina will go through in the next book because she's afraid that she's becoming the Darkling and he's truly the only one who understands her. This is even leaves room for the Darkling's manipulations towards Alina as well as having the reader question the Darkling's character because if him and Alina are not so different does that truly make him a monster?

Compared to the season 1 ending, I can't complain about the Crows involvement too much because they needed to fit into the story somehow. Also, I liked how the writers actually gave an explanation to why the Darkling killed the citizens of NovoKribirsk because it's not explained until King of Scars that they want independence from Ravka since they've grown comfortable with not being ruled over, thanks to the Fold. They were even planning on aligning with Fjerda to do it even though they hunt and kill Grisha. As a result, the Darkling killed them as a lesson to his enemies; if he's willing to slaughter his own people, then imagine what he'll do to his enemies?

Now, the negatives: I didn't like some of the camera shots because it made the scenes look awkward and cheesy at times. Also, I didn't like how the Darkling got into a fist fight with Mal because he's supposed to be this all powerful being and that scene diminished that. The other complaint was how Zoya was friendly towards Alina at the end of the season because there wasn't any build up to a friendship forming between them. They were enemies, then they magically make up because the Darkling betrayed them even though in the books there was so much more than that being the reason why Zoya didn't like her.

Overall, this is Netflix's best fantasy adaptations or at least one of the best and I look forward to season 2!!

Enjoyed every minute of it
liyanashoura23 February 2023
Best episode of the season for sure. I enjoyed every second! I'm usually very anxious to watch book to screen adaptations of the novels I like because I end up feeling quite underwhelmed, and though there were many changes like the crows and Alina's story intertwining, somehow it all worked out . The cast are perfect, I really couldn't imagine better actors for the roles especially Jessie Mei Lee. She gave depth and character into the rather boring book Alina. The emotions she portrayed throughout this episode and the previous one, it's like you can feel her shock and hurt and disbelief at was being done to her. This season ended in a very satisfying exciting way and I can't wait for the next season!!!

Good but could have been better
carinalynn9827 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
At times it didn't feel like a finale episode but it was still a lot of fun, just didn't feel as epic as I wanted it to be.

Not enough action, and the fight scenes that were shown weren't very impressive. It was just a bit of fist fighting and an underwhelming use of magical powers. The two best fight scenes were, 1. The one in the forest in the second episode, when the darkling uses the cut to chop the man in half and 2. In episode 4 when Mal fights in the snowy forest. Oh and I did enjoy a few scenes in episode 7 with Alina and the darkling using their powers, both in the flashbacks and the killing of the stag. Other than those few I find the action lacking something. Probably the gore and violence, but I understand it is a YA show.

Sometimes I felt that the crows got in and out of places a little too easily without much trouble, wouldn't other guards recognise their own in a palace straight away? It was a bit unbelievable at times. Kaz didn't really do anything this whole episode except stab a volcra so that was disappointing, and Jesper literally only made like 3 shots.

I really liked the last shot in this episode though and Ben Barnes as the Darkling is perfection. Honestly, he is the one who carries this show.

Other actors I will commemorate are: Archie Renaux as Mal and Kit Young as Jesper.

The others were just ok.

As usual...
taraangel-4096011 May 2021
I'm always disappointed when I watch a season of a Netflix show. They start out great, and then in the last episode they crash and burn. You wait a couple of years for a second season that never comes. So I guess I'll just have to accept this totally disappointing 'finale'. Maybe I'll simply stop watching Netflix series. That's the ticket!

Season One Review
southdavid16 July 2021
My experiences with Netflix's fantasy output has been mixed, for every "The Witcher" there's a couple of "Cursed" or "The Irregulars". "Shadow and Bone" I rather enjoyed. I knew nothing at all going in, having never read the books but after a bit of confusion with the first couple of episodes, particularly geography wise, it settled down into a story that I was invested in, with characters I enjoyed.

The country of Ravka is split in two by "The fold" an area of dark magic and literally darkness, that contains creatures called Volcra. Though commonly mistrusted, and in history hunted, the world contains humans with magical elemental powers called the Grisha. One such Grisha is Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) who has grown up unaware of her gift as she avoided early detection. Whilst crossing the fold, it becomes apparent that her power is the most unique of all, she is a Sun summoner and if properly harnessed, her power can bring down the fold for ever.

The Alina storyline is actually only one of three that run through this series, two of which interact at regular points. Another see Kaz Brekker, an entrepreneur, set his team on trying to kidnap the Sun Summoner and a third sees Nina, a Grisha taken as a slave by Matthias and his crew, before eventually winning him over and the pair becoming lovers.

It's admittedly all a bit "YA" for someone of my age. The relationships are chaste affairs, with longing looks, there's not much swearing or explicit violence, though the body count does start to mount up. I did like pretty much all the characters though, with Ben Barnes probably being the pick - literally the handsome devil. And that admiration of the characters is what got me through the series, even when the first couple of episodes were baffling dense with introduction of characters, locations and ideas.

It's not going to join any lists of the best shows I've ever seen, but I've seen a lot worse and will be back for the second season.

Epic storytelling but cluttered with a lot going on.
cruise0130 June 2021
Season 1 3 out of 5 stars.

Epic fantasy series. But the series is cluttered with lots of characters and story that makes it somewhat difficult to follow. Love the cast. The decent action. But there are some slow episodes that makes it difficult to get into.

Saints Become Martyrs Before They Become Heroes.
wandernn1-81-68327425 August 2021
So.... FancyPants, Sunshine Girl, KAz's crew, everyone is on the same ship crossing the fold??? And what now? They are sporting lights so they attract flying fold critters???

Why are they crossing the Fold? I am lost.

Okay Kaz crew encounters stowaway Whipping Boy on the ship and decides to give him his gun back and join their cause? Just trust someone based on their word? This show is full of that concept. -1 Star

Hhahaha., General Fancypants EXTENDS the fold, unleashing its critters on the people waiting to ambush Sunshine Girl. RuhRoh here comes Whipping Boy for a big rescue, FAIL. Why doesn't FancyPants just kill him? Oh, some agreement with SunshineGirl to spare his life. I see.

OMG Did they just almost kill Fancypants???? Oh man I was gonna be really upset! I like the Fold critters. Reminds me of the flying nasties from Pitch Black. Oh and the magic stag returns!!!

Seriously? If FancyPants hold over Sunshine Girl could be so easily undone, why would he ever expose himself to losing it??? That was stupid. -1 Star

Oh wait, now some more stupid scenes as Whipping Boy fights FancyPants??? Sunshine Girl wakes up just in time to save them ALL!!!

So now Kaz, and Gunslinger, Silks/Dagger Girl, Whipping Boy, Sunshine Girl and who is the bluecloak again? I forget. Anyways they are all together now enjoying campfires and jewelry exchanges. Oops. Nevermind.. Spending a lot of time setting up a Season 2 here?

Come on Kaz, people of your type don't fall in Love. Your character is too good for that.

At least some semblance of a saving grace at the very end, as Darth Vader's Tie Fighter goes spinning out of control but eventually rights itself for a return appearance next season. +1 Star, 4/10.
