Film critic and historian Imogen Sara Smith talks about Barbara Stanwyck's starring role in the offbeat Samuel Fuller Western "Forty Guns." Smith points out that Fuller had such a distinctive style that he qualified as a genre unto himself. Smith further notes that "Forty Guns" centers on middle-aged characters as the heroes and romantic interests. Smith discusses Stanwyck in detail: She talks about how Stanwyck stemmed from Brooklyn, allowed herself to age naturally onscreen, had a contained and stripped down acting style, and even insisted on doing her own stunts in "Forty Guns" that include being dragged behind a horse. Smith also states that Jessica Drummond isn't depicted as a villain in the picture as well as talks about how Griff killed both Jessica and her brother in the original intended ending. Worth a watch for fans of the film.
