Tron (1982)

Tron as a Christian allegory
30 September 2000
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS AHEAD

Tron is a film I enjoyed so much as a child who grew up on the first generation of video games. Now looking back on this film, I see that most people (including myself, until now)completely miss all of the symbolism it presents.

Sark urges the blue programs to "renounce this superstitious and hysterical belief" in the users, knowing that to keep his warriors in line, they must not know the real truth. Recall the scene where RAM asks ROM, "you believe in the users?" The answer is, "Sure. I mean, if I don't have a user, then who wrote me?" Also recall that the blue programs were ridiculed and persecuted for their beliefs, and even forced to fight gladiator (albeit video game) style for their lives.

Flynn represents the Christ figure. He is paradoxically both user and program in the computer world, as Jesus Christ was (according to Christian doctrine) both man and God. Recall the powers he has over other programs (repairing recognizers, saving others from untimely deaths). The MCP and Sark (Caesar and Pontius Pilate?) are only defeated when Flynn voluntarily sacrifices himself by jumping into the core of the MCP. This of course parallels Christ's accepting His own crucifixion to save Mankind. After Tron throws the disc, Flynn's descent reverses and he ascends back in the real world (Christ's resurrection and return to Heaven). Also recall that the whole computer world is freed and literally lights up as soon as the tyrannical MCP and Sark are vanquished. The most important line of the whole film is when Yuri tells Tron, "Flynn saved us! He really did!"

Add this to many, many other obvious and subtle symbols of Christianity (i.e. water/baptism/purification; the I/O tower which Tron uses to communicate with his user/ communication with God through church)and it's hard to see how so many people overlooked the hidden meaning of this movie.

Highly recommended, the dated effects don't bother me one bit. In fact, they even make me nostalgic for the simpler, far more primitive, charming time that was the 80's.

End of line.

The quintessential action film
13 September 2000
My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember the Road Warrior...

What can be said that hasn't already? The Road Warrior is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular action films ever made. It's very rare that I grant the score of 10 for a movie, but this one gets it and deserves it. From the opening imagery and narration, it almost seems like we're watching an alternate reality rather than a future sci-fi film, much unlike Mad Max's "A FEW YEARS FROM NOW..." prologue. This was a film that inspired countless ripoffs and wannabes; perhaps imitation is the most sincere form of flattery (I was secretly hoping the Y2K computer bug would destroy society so that I could put on my black leather jacket, get a pair half-pair] of football shoulder pads, and a sawed-off shotgun so I could drive around the desert and kill people for their gasoline).

I've always loved movies presenting larger-than-life heroes. Indiana Jones, Conan, Dirty Harry, Flash Gordon, James Bond, Luke Skywalker, Robocop, whoever Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee play, John McClain ... the list goes on and on. But Mel Gibson's Mad Max is #1 on my list of the greatest action movie protagonists of all-time.

A simple question never answered...
24 June 2000
Warning: Spoilers
(possible mild spoiler)

My question is this: What exactly is The Phantom Menace? What character or event does this signify? The title "The Phantom Menace" could be interpreted two ways. One seemingly implies that there would be a proposed threat which turned out to be false or insignificant. The other is that there is indeed a very real threat, only is is unbeknownst, hidden, or veiled. I have only one possible theory as to what this alleged menace could be - Senator (later in Empire and Jedi he'd become Emperor)Palpatine. But this character doesn't seem too significant here, so why name the movie after a secondary character? SW: I has perhaps the strangest title for any major motion picture since A Clockwork Orange (the title of which is never, ever explained or even mentioned in that movie).

WILL SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT IN THE WORLD THIS MEANS?

The best Troma movie, bar none.
18 June 2000
This is actually a decent film. Much better than Waterworld, Escape from L.A., or a lot of other similar-themed garbage from major studios. Sure, it's tongue-in-cheek, campy, and ludicrous. But then, it wouldn't feel right as a Troma movie if it weren't, now would it? Although I'm almost a little embarrassed to admit it, I'm very glad I purchased the DVD. Having seen it several times, it holds up well to repeated viewings and there are some genuinely funny moments. The synthesizer-heavy main theme as well as the instrumentals during surf scenes are terrific. I wish the soundtrack were available. Overall, Surf Nazis Must Die is recommended. Don't believe the low ratings it has received.

Overrated
18 June 2000
I've seen my fair share of racial, sexist, and/or politically incorrect humor. Some of it is funny, some just downright offensive, but this animated short is curiously not much of either.

I bought the bootleg tape after reading the praise in The 50 Greatest Cartoons book. OK soundtrack, some cute takes on Snow White, but really, I can't see what all the fuss is about. Kind of like the Disney film, Song of the South. WB's Coal Black is not terrible, but no great loss, either.

Wretched, inane, infantile, moronic excuse for a film
6 June 2000
Those are probably the nicest words I can use to describe this steaming pile of excrement posing (badly) as a movie. Ludicrous and insulting to the intelligence in almost every scene, I might be able to forgive this if it were done in a campy, "just for laughs" style, but this is ridiculous!

Harrison Ford was once one of my favorite actors, but after this debacle I will never again have the respect I once held for this thespian. Every performance was completely over the top and subsequently unconvincing. The physics and logistical plot holes were unforgivable. And the utter predictability is the final nail in this movie's coffin. I would have walked out long before the end, but I just had to stay to see if I could see if what I predicted would come true. As soon as it did, I split. That this movie received ANY positive reviews is revealing and sad, and the attitude that the world would end if anything happened to our beloved president frankly makes me embarrassed to be an American. One of the worst movies (if not THE worst) I have ever had the misfortune of seeing.

Avoid
6 June 2000
I had absolutely nothing better to do when I watched this movie. It was playing at a local theater which played movies in limbo between theatrical and home video release, and I thought I had nothing to lose by seeing it for a mere 1.50. It turns out I had 1.50 and 90 minutes of my life, plus any shred of dignity I previously held. Quite simply, this ranks right down there with Class of Nuke 'Em High II, Bloodsucking Freaks, Star Trek V, Frightmare, Microwave Massacre, and Mac and Me as one of the worst movies I've seen in my entire life, hands down.

Please take this warning seriously. Do not, under any circumstances, view Street Fighter: The Movie. I guarantee you will regret it.

Mickey One (1965)

A well-made drama
31 May 2000
I saw this movie for the first time in a film appreciation class and at first I was put off by its style and opaque content. But I felt compelled to seek out and purchase the laserdisc, and subsequently I enjoy it very much. Basically, Warren Beatty is a nightclub comic on the run from the mob. Along the way there is much symbolism, events which may or may not be hallucinations, and spoken words with double meanings which may or may not be significant. What makes this movie successful is that very little is 100% clear, and I am actually in the minority who believe that Mickey One's paranoia is indeed justified. An underground film which deserves its cult status, see it if you get the chance.

A movie taken out of context...
17 May 2000
Yes, I actually thought this was better than some recent horror/comedies I've seen. Certainly superior to Urban Legend or Scream. I'm positively stunned by the fact that people would see the cover for this movie, read the title and synopsis, watch it, and then complain that this flick is offensive. For crying out loud, what do you expect from a film whose promotional literature shows a melted transient's head in a toilet bowl? Casablanca? Anyone dumb enough to see this movie and be taken aback by its admittedly sordid contents has exactly what they have coming to them.

Dreadful, really...
8 May 2000
Warning: Spoilers
Hands down one of the all-time worst I've seen. I'm simply astonished that this was actually released theatrically. *Minor Spoiler* (as if anybody would care)

Note that before the end of this film, there is a note stating, "We'll be back". Whatever did happen to the proposed sequel to this one?

Everything you've heard is true. Manipulative, sappy, and derivative in every conceivable way. I've heard that The Wizard contains the most products in any film (Back to the Future is another runner-up), but I can't imagine any movie with more thinly-veiled ads than this mess. Ridiculous musical sequence, shameless plugs, misuse of the word "H*LL", a traffic accident which was almost certainly fatal and is laughed off by the main characters, and those are the good parts! This one may have been worse than Street Fighter, but then again, maybe not. Avoid at all costs. That anyone rated this movie a "10" proves that too many jokers are allowed in IMDb. Seriously, I don't see how ANYBODY could find this movie a "10", and I do know some children who found it somewhat enjoyable. Perhaps the fact that no one ever attempted to further the adventures of Mac and his kin offers some evidence that God's grace shines upon us all. Mac and Me is a wretched excuse for entertainment that is literally not even worth the film on which it is printed.

Rules of Engagement is a real breath of fresh air from all the mindless drivel polluting theatres nowadays. Excels on almost every technical level (acting, writing, direction, cinematography are all top-notch) as well as providing an intelligent, thought-provoking scenario. One really feels for the plight of Samuel Jackson's character and wonders how we might react in such a dilemma. The same can also be said for Tommy Lee Jones' character. This movie will no doubt draw comparisons with A Few Good Men, but Rules of Engagement is a much superior film (yes, I know this is a large statement). More than anything else, this one confirms what I've known for a while - it's almost impossible to create an action/drama as well as William Friedkin when he's at his best.

A guilty pleasure
30 March 2000
This is a bad movie that I happen to enjoy and find entertaining. I saw it on HBO about 7 years ago, and liked it enough to tape it and watch it a few times. Yes, I know it's exploitive and sleazy, but then again I certainly wasn't bored. I actually like the ending a lot. The last few moments are actually fairly well-done.

Ratboy (1986)
Much maligned misunderstood masterpiece.
27 March 2000
Ratboy is, quite simply, one of the finest motion pictures ever made. It certainly earns its status amongst cinema's greatest achievements. Like It's a Wonderful Life and Freaks, Ratboy was a critical and commercial failure during its time, but will no doubt one day receive the accolade and recognition it so richly deserves. Sandra Locke's portrayal of Ratboy's friend/mentor is nothing short of galvanizing. Cinematography, direction, writing, and sound are second to none. And the whole atmosphere of the film (along with one of the most empathetic, intriguing, and likable protagonists ever), is nothing short of remarkable. Ratboy is a film that must be seen!

COME ON! IT'S NOT THAT BAD!
4 March 2000
I mean, anyone with lofty expectations for a film like Surf Nazis Must Die is fooling themselves. What do you expect from a Troma film like this? Something like Chinatown? The Godfather? Citizen Kane? Given their early to mid 90's garbage like Class of Nuke 'Em High 2 - Subhumanoid Meltdown, Toxic Avenger II and III, etc., this movie showed promise. The premise is interesting and I kind of like the fact that it takes itself halfway serious. Others from Troma (like those in which Sgt. Kabukiman or Toxie make cameo appearances) are so full of in-jokes and so self-referential as "TROMA FLICKS" that get old very fast. Surf Nazis is arguably the best movie to come from this studio, and it's inexplicable that it's rated so low here. Genuine laughs, solid character development, intriguing plot, surprising plot twists, and everyone has understandable motivations for their actions. All this plus a truly excellent soundtrack that I wish I could purchase. Recommended.

Enjoyable movie, but I have a question...
27 February 2000
Mulan is yet another winning animated feature from Disney. However, there is one question I cannot get out of my head. Is there any material missing from the DVD that was included in the theatrical release? I could have SWORN that at one point, Eddie Murphy's character said something like, "You expect me to believe that this drag queen just happened to need a ride somewhere?!" Was this omitted from home versions? Please, someone e-mail me with the answer!

Excruciatingly dull
24 February 2000
The Deer Hunter is hands down the worst war movie I've seen. It's a shame that the few powerful moments and fine performances that are here are completely wasted. Who on Earth wants to see long, boring, and totally pointless scenes of monotonous daily life amongst a bunch of uncharismatic people? Character development is one thing. We don't need to see two hours of beer drinking, pool shooting, and especially the extended wedding sequence if absolutely none of it is relevant and not the least bit entertaining. By the time the film's few genuinely moving scenes do arrive, they are too little, too late. If you haven't seen The Deer Hunter and are viewing all the positive comments here, please take what I've said into consideration.

Pretty bad, sorry to say.
9 February 2000
I am sorry to admit that I didn't think this was good at all. I'm not the target demographic, admittedly, but if not for being with my mother, I'd have walked out of this movie. Despite an intriguing premise, the movie never really goes anywhere. There are myriad plot holes and the acting is also some of the worst I've seen in a long time. The climax was dull and unsatisfying, and likely to offend most if not all non-Christians. Religious films can be done well, but they are definitely hit (The Exorcist, The Believers, King of Kings, Ben Hur) or miss (Exorcist II and III, Stigmata). Revelation is, unfortunately, in the latter category. DON'T SEE IT.

OUTSTANDING!
9 February 2000
One of the best horror films ever made. I would rate this 9/10. The only reason I don't give it a 10 is because one story (The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill [sp?]) is not nearly as good as the others. But all the others are simply terrific, and the filmmakers wisely saved the best for last. "They're Creeping Up On You" is perhaps the most hysterically repulsive horror short story I've seen. I have probably seen this whole movie at least 20 times, and I'm sure I'll see it at least another 20 or so, too. FABULOUS!

Middle of the road...
9 February 2000
and therefore inferior to most of the James Bond films. It seemed like at times I didn't know if I was watching James Bond or Shaft. The Blaxploitation era of the early '70's is obviously a heavy influence. Done right, I can enjoy one of either of these kind of films, but the two prove to be as incompatible as oil and water. Not a terrible movie, but nothing special. Roger Moore is my favorite actor to play this role, but here he doesn't seem right.

... and those are probably the nicest adjectives I can think to describe this flick. One of the most boring movies I have ever seen. And believe me, I've seen some dull pictures in my time. NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, RENT THIS MOVIE. I can appreciate a bad horror film (heck, I even like some Troma movies), but trust me on this. I cannot imagine ANYONE, ANYWHERE finding this enjoyable. On a scale of 1-10, it's a one. Boy, I wish I could rate it lower.

The Twilight Zone (1985–1989)
A well-made series.
6 February 2000
I always enjoyed both old and new Twilight Zone episodes on TV as well as the movie. Overall, I think this was a little better than "Tales from the Crypt" or "Tales from the Darkside", but they are also enjoyable shows. As with any anthology, the stories are definitely hit or miss. Some of my favorites were Nightcrawlers, The Elevator, Matter of Minutes, The Little People of Killany Woods, Children's Zoo, Button Button, and many others.

On an interesting side note, this series was released on Japanese Laserdiscs in the early 90's. I know that at least 12 volumes were produced. I own two of these discs, and someday I'll probably buy the remaining 10. Also, last year they were rebroadcasting some episodes on TNT.

Tales from the Darkside (1983–1988)
Good anthology series for network TV...
6 February 2000
For some odd reason, I like this more than the cable "Tales from the Crypt" series, although I like that one alright, too. Somehow, these just seemed scarier. My favorite episode would have to be "Baker's Dozen," in which a bayou woman's cookies turn out to have supernatural powers. I know the premise is ridiculous, but this one works beautifully and can easily stand against even the best Twilight Zone. I also enjoyed "The Milkman Cometh", "Beetles", "Your Weight is Over (I think this was the title)". The series did have its fair share of turkeys, but that is to be expected with any anthology series. Good series.

Mad Max (1979)

US vs. Aus. versions
5 February 2000
Warning: Spoilers
OK, I've just seen this one in its original version for the first time and I've noticed a few differences:

(some spoilers)

There is a brief scene on the news that Night Rider was taken out by the Main Force Patrol.

Before Max is told that Night Rider's gang is out to get him, there is a scene of a very bloody face in a smashed car window and nearby an ambulance

When Goose is at the nightclub, there are scenes of one of the gang members sabotaging his motorcycle. Later, we see a few scenes of the inside of his apartment and a plastic baby doll on his front door.

The scenes with Goose talking to the truck driver before he borrows the truck seem a bit longer (?)

Max's wife running through the forest appear to have a few more seconds (?)

After the mechanic is questioned by Max, Toecutter finds pictures of Goose and Max's wife and son.

Now, some of these scenes may have appeared in the U.S. version but maybe I just couldn't see them due to Pan and Scan or perhaps my memory isn't perfect here. But I thought some people would want to know what additional scenes were in the Australia version. I sure do wish I could get this without having to buy a region 2 player and import DVD!

Sorcerer (1977)
10/10
Possibly the best film of the '70's
3 February 2000
I have just seen Wages of Fear, and although it was a fine film, Sorcerer is better. It excels on every possible level of film making.

Acting, cinematography, direction, writing, score, and pacing of Sorcerer are simply some of the best I've ever seen. The 1970's were indeed a spectacular era for movies, and I can think of only a few (perhaps Godfather, Carnal Knowledge, Rocky, Chinatown) that can match this awesome flick! The only thing I would change is the title. On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 9.

The Lion King (1994)

The Lion King as political allegory
2 February 2000
Warning: Spoilers
When this first came out, I was so impressed I saw it several times. It still remains one of my favorite movies and nearly everyone I've ever met who has seen it regards it highly. That said, it is somewhat surprising to me that more people do not recognize that The Lion King owes about as much to Hamlet as it does Orwell's Animal Farm. Here's why. (SPOILERS)

The herd of wildebeasts utilized by Scar appear to represent mindless masses of general populace. By themselves they are essentially harmless, but properly (or improperly) rallied, they can even succeed in overthrowing an entire government. The hyenas who are conned into scaring them seem to stand for basic undesirable elements plaguing society today (the alluring culture of the street, corrupt law enforcement officials, possibly irresponsible journalistic practices). The movie also makes a strong point that when these individuals are allowed to roam freely in society, inevitably the same vices plaguing their territory (elephant graveyard - perhaps alluding to the inner cities of many major cities... at least in the U.S.) will befall everyone else as well. Note the strong resemblance of the rock formation at the end of "Be Prepared" to skyscrapers found downtown in any large city. For these and other reasons, it's not too much of a surprise that The Lion King was criticized for racist overtones. Still, if you can put this aside, and haven't seen it by now, The Lion King remains the most stunning and complex films in animation history
