Stay Away From This Garbage!
18 February 2002
I really don't like leaving comments about movies which are better left in a dumpster, but sometimes it's ones duty to warn others. Well....This is my warning! Please do not waste one moment of your time watching this "film". Your time would be better spent turning on your TV in order to watch commercials. It's really that bad - Trust me.

But It's Bella Lugosi
18 February 2002
OK, so the stars are a poor (very poor) imitation of Martin & Lewis. Yes, the movie is a lot on the low budget and bad side. Yet, it's Bela Lugosi! From great movies like Dracula, Island of Lost Souls and The Black Cat to bombs like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Bride of the Monster and Mother Riley Meets the Vampire, Bela makes it worth your time in one way or another.

I like this film. It's silly and not very good, but it makes me laugh. Therefore, I'm entertained and that's the whole idea.

There's Nothing Invisible About The High Quality Of This Film
18 February 2002
This is just about in the same league as `The Black Cat', although I'd give this a 9 rather than a 9+. That's praise indeed for a film that has been so badly underrated that it is amazing!

`The Invisible Ray' is part horror, part drama and certainly part sci-fi. For a movie made in 1936 the sci-fi elements were a good deal ahead of their time. The mixture of horror, drama and sci-fi are a perfect blend, while the acting on the part of Lugosi and Karloff couldn't be better.

Director Lambert Hillyer captures a lot of elements that James Whale did so often. What I'm saying is that this film is eerie and well shot. The scene with the gargoyles outside of Lugosi's room is a perfect example of the mood. It's a standout moment in the film, which is so sadly missing in today's movies of the genre.

As with `The Black Cat' and `Island of Lost Souls', I can't understand why this film has yet to be released on DVD. When you consider some of the junk that's already been transferred to DVD it's that much more puzzling.

Anyway, watch this film if you get the chance. When it's released on DVD grab it fast and put it in an honored spot within your DVD library.

One of the All-time Greats
18 February 2002
`The phone is dead. Do you hear that Vitus? Even the phone is dead.' What a great line!

This is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff playing chess and fighting it out over old wounds and new ones.

The entire supporting cast is splendid as is the direction Edgar G. Ulmer. Yet could we expect less from a story (loosely adapted as it was) by Edgar Allan Poe and this cast? See for yourself and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Many aspects of this film remind me of `Old Dark House' and I like it just as much. If you know me you would realize what a ringing endorsement that truly is.

I think you'll be refreshingly surprised at Lugosi playing the sympathetic character, even though it's not entirely clear early on in the movie.

One of the scenes that has always stood out in my mind since first watching this film is the one near the end when Lugosi ties up Karloff. There is no blood and yet it is more gruesome than many of today's graphic moments. It goes to show that there is more to great horror than having to show every detail.

Keep an eye out for the title of the book Karloff reads in bed….Very creepy stuff.

I rate this movie a 9+ in the category of horror classics. To me it's not Frankenstein or Dracula but not that far below.

So Bad It Must Be Seen!
12 February 2002
This movie is so bad I hope it comes out on DVD so I can watch it for a laugh. If you think your home movies are bad watch "Night of the Zombies" and you'll think you are Alfred Hitchcock!

Without exception there is nothing redeeming about this film. The plot, script, direction and video quality are that bad.
