Strella (2009)

that's the glory, that's the story of love
8 February 2010
despite the fact that the film caused a huge commotion in it's native country shocking the puritans, right wing bigots into a fury, Strella is not at all a shocking film.

It's not a "film by an oppressed director trying to glorify his sexuality" but rather, a bold statement about love, family and about "normal" not existing anymore (if it ever was).

The only shocking thing about it is how low key it is, creating a loving picture out of characters and a social milieu that has often been the subject of cinematic exploitation, or ridicule.

Coutras makes magic out of the simplest materials and his two main actors perform with astounding truth a story that can only be shocking or insulting to narrow minded, hateful people.

Nevertheless, the film does get a strong social, sexual, political point through, but it's not one of anger, or hate, but one of love and acceptance. and that unfortunately, is still too much for some to take...

TV of my youth
15 November 2006
I can't remember many details about the show, but i remember how passionate i was about it and how i was determined not to miss any episodes. Unfortunately at the time we had no VCR, so i haven't ever seen the series again. However i can remember strongly how i felt while watching it and how thrilled i was every time it came on. Sam Waterstone was my favorite actor these days (i think i was almost in love) and he remains one of my favorite actors to the day, mostly due to his appearance in the series. I would gladly buy/steal/download this series, i think i would go to great lengths in order to see it again and revisit a childhood long gone... Any ideas? Does anybody knows of a site devoted to the series or has the episodes on tape from their first airing?

Hardcore (2004)
Fun and games it's not, a great movie it is.

Fun and games it's not, a great movie it is. It's masterfully directed it oozes creativity, it's touching and hard at the same time, it hasn't got a boring moment, it was snubbed by critics, it's in one word brilliant. Dennis Iliadis paints a picture of wasted youth but the movie is much more than a cautionary tale. It is a film about longing, about the need to feel at home, the need of a family. The movie's young protagonists may seem as lost cases to some, but they are no different than you and me. They may sell their bodies they may kill for fun and money, but, hey, we all do what we have to do... Try to see this movie. it's worth your admission money(and then some)!

A Vitriolic Masterpiece
21 February 2002
Not too often a film like this comes along. When it does however it demands your attention. Based the cult novel by B. S. Johnson, with Peter Greenaway's collaborator Kees Kasander in production and Luke Haines' of Auters and Black Box Recorder behind the soundtrack, Christie Malry's Own Double Entry lays a claim upon the title of the best English film (almost)no one saw.

Christie lives with his mother, and works in a bank. When he discovers the simple bookkeeping principle of double entries - a debit for every credit - the picture starts to clear: he charges himself for every insult received, and credits society for every insult he returns. His «credit-rate» starts from simple acts of vandalism, and escalate to a magnificent, misanthropic plan. Suddenly, Christie's life finds a shocking new meaning.

Brilliant and unsparing, mordant and seductive, this film is an act of courage on it's own. You might find it too much to take if your view of the world is blurred by Hollywood romantic comedies, but if you give it a chance it might change your life -or at least two hours of it...
