The Doris Day Show: The Feminist (1970)
Typical 1970's Feminist story
This was an episode where Doris Martin was your average woman of the time. Not a feminist but one who wanted equal rights.
After a man from the magazine is rebuffed from the Feminist, they call Doris to meet with her. Upon arriving you see the typical feminist jokes, women smoking cigars, and acting like men. Once other women come in the Feminist calls them "girls" not women.
At the end of the show, Doris has met a new suitor and has dressed to the nines meets the Feminist at the same restaurant and sees how hypocritical the Feminist is when a man has sweet-talked her into giving him rights to new book.
The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: The Magic Shop (1964)
Very scary story
Thought I have not seen this episode since I was in elementary school 40 years ago. But it left a lasting impression.
A young boy goes to a magic store and vanishes along with the owner. He later turns up at home but seem different. He starts doing real magic (what you would probably call witchcraft (ala Bewitched). At the midway point the neighbor kills his dog and he vows revenge. In the last scene, he looks out his window and makes that neighbor's house catch fire. He moves his index finger in a circle then punches the middle and the fire starts in one window. He repeats that several times. In a minute, the whole house is engulfed in flames. After that he takes a picture of his father and with a knife, cuts the face and the same cuts come on his father. It ends with them eating and the family is scared to say anything.
This episode of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour will be run tomorrow August 15, 2008 at 6:00 am and 12:00 pm on the Chiller Network This may wind up not being as scary if I see it now. Like the end of the Outer Limits' Misfits of Zanti at the end you can see the strings holding the giant ants. You notice cheesy things like that now, but when you are a young child, things like this do not matter.
The Chiller Network is now showing the Alfred Hitchcock Hour, so maybe I can see it again.
The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet: David's Pipe (1953)
Ozzie and Harriet are worried when a relative sends David a pipe.
Although it has been a while since I've seen this episode, there are things that come to mind.
One of David's relatives, thinking he is already in college and smoking send him a pipe. They obviously do not realize he is only 15. After getting the pipe, David sports it all around town. Ozzie and Harriet are worried that he will start smoking.
Finally, David is seen purchasing pipe tobacco at the local drug store. Thorny tells Ozzie about the purchase and that he should have picked a much better brand of tobacco. Also David claimed that he was buying the tobacco for his mother.
Later Ozzies goes home to tell Harriet and she is putting the tobacco in sleeves to kill moths in the closets. She told Ozzie that she had to trust David and sent him to get the tobacco. Later David admits he was tempted to try smoking the pipe but the aroma of the tobacco made him not want to do it.
Finally, David tells his parents that he gave the pipe away. In comes Ricky with the pipe in his mouth. He asks his parents if they want to see him smoke it and he blows bubbles out of it.
So really Ozzie and Harriet were worried over nothing.
The Rifleman: The Sidewinder (1963)
A young boy comes gunning for Lucas
Gridley Mau has longed for the day to confront Lucas for killing his father during a robbery. He only wants revenge and plans to get it anyway he can.
After confronting Lucas in town and Lucas refuses fight him, Mau rides out to the McCain ranch where Mark is. After arriving at the McCain ranch, Mau challenges Mark to a gunfight but Mark refuses. Mau knows Lucas is on his way so he waits in the house. While there, Mau gets one of Lucas's cigars and smokes it while he waits for Lucas.
Lucas and Mark overpower Mau and take him to the sheriff. Later Lou Mallery tames him and he accepts Lucas as a friend. At the end of the episode Mau offers Lucas and Micah a cigar and starts to light his. After this the cigars explode ending the episode with a laugh.
The Rifleman: Smoke Screen (1960)
Title says it all
The title says it all about the episode. The smoke screen is an expensive cigar butt found at the crime scene after Marge Crandall is murdered. At first Lucas and Micah think the traveling salesman in town committed the murder. Later Lucas learns that Mark smoked the cigar. This at first exonerates the salesman until he reveals what was inside Marge's change purse. The smoke screen is gone and the guilty is arrested.
The end scene is interesting. Seeing that Mark feels better after smoking the cigar, Lucas offers him another cigar. Mark refuses saying he has sworn off smoking forever. Lucas realizes the after effects of youthful smoking was enough punishment for Mark.
Toomorrow (1970)
First of Olivia's "Divine as in supernatural" films
Toomorrow is definitely not as bad as has been reported. It is actually an enjoyable movie. It is no "Grease" but definitely better than "Two of a Kind." It is equal to "Xanadu" and probably better.
To me Olivia was being natural with her perky personality. Her acting did not seem like acting as it did in Xanadu when she tells Sunny that she is a muse. Instead everyone in the Toomorrow group seem to be enjoying themselves as they go through the film.
Granted the movie is not Oscar material but considering how bad so much is today, I would love to see Toomorrow on the big screen or at least come out on DVD.
Definitely worth a look.
