Vinland Saga: I Want a Horse (2023)
The Life of a peasant
Coming right after an episode dealing with Canute's schemes to become king of England, reminding us of the first season, this is one of the best episodes in this series. It serves as a counterpoint to all the battles of the first season, but also complementing Thorfin's father vision of life. I suppose it will also serve to give context to Thorfin's future actions. The narrative was designed to show Einar becoming the experienced person in opposition to a Thorfin who knew nothing about the life and work in the countryside, but also to subvert all this when the episode ends with the dialogue about thieves and tribute. Fantastic!
The Last Kingdom: Episode #5.10 (2022)
Cringy
Definitely not better than GOT finale. I was cringing throughout the whole episode. The battle scenes were edited in the worst possible way, serving bad plot decisions instead of common sense. This is particularly the case for the part in which Edward's army was hanging at the cliff, while Uthred parlays with Stiorra and the danes. That was pure crappy writing.
Love, Death & Robots: Pop Squad (2021)
Lazy story, good visuals
Beautiful animation, interesting concept, lame script with lazy lines and predictable ending.
Shinseiki Evangelion: Otoko no Tatakai (1996)
True sight
This episode is awesome. The tension between characters, the clash of motivations are wonderfully written, but the design of the action and the concept of the true EVA makes it the best episode so far.
The Legend of Korra: The Last Stand (2014)
Underwhelming
Impressive visual animation and action, but underwhelming plot and character development for such an important finale. The biggest problem is that, narrative wise, you shouldn't treat a nuclear bomb like it's a sword or a pistol. Even if it's in a Mecha. It cheapens the menace of the weapon. And Kuvira being revealed as some sort of Lex Luthor was also lame.
The Legend of Korra: The Battle of Zaofu (2014)
Bored
Probably the worst episode of the whole Avatar series. No real stakes, no character development and a slow and predictable plot with an obvious and emotionless showdown. Often in ATLOK, the antagonist have good motivations that are wasted by the writers, uninterested in explaining why the antagonists in ATLOK have so many people following them. It's easier to just call them mad. That is not the case with Kulvira: a quite boring antagonist.
The Legend of Korra: Long Live the Queen (2014)
Villain?
Why do the showrunners think Zaheer is a villain? He is not. The great problem pf TLOK is that this show chose to have as antagonists groups like the Red Lotus and Amon, which have quite legitimate motivations, and in the aftermath of the conflict keep failing to address what compelled people to support these villains (on the other hand, when it does address, as it happens with Unalaq, the results are very good).
La Révolution (2020)
Beautiful, ingenuous and boring
The photography is marvellous, with rich visuals and alluring production desing. The story has a clever premise, translating the French revolution into a compelling vampire story. Buuut...the script crawls slowly and seems to be terrified of any kind of plot advancement, waisting precious screening time. All this rarely results in interesting character development (but when it finally does it's quite good). The final result is boring. No show based on the Great Revolution should be allowed to be this boring.
Blood of Zeus (2020)
8 episode filler series
By Zeus, here is a great example of awful plot and dialogues ruining any enjoyment that could be created by the good animation technique and the action. The mandatory Joseph Campbell hero journey could have used any other folklore or mythological skin to tell this tale, but they opted for the Greek. Of course, the creators are from Greek ascent. (Are they really, though?) Why, then, why do they refuse to really use the source material and instead produce an anime whose scriptwriting is so generic that makes the 2 recent Clash of Titans look like good movies? This is nothing but an 8 episode filler series that do not deserve the money invested on it or the attention it gets from Netflix.
Lovecraft Country: Full Circle (2020)
How to ruin a great serie in the last episode
Love the book and loved the series, but the last episode is awful. The writing was all over the place. Terrible choices when it comes to how to handle the major plot resolutions. But the one thing I won't forgive the last episode is the offscreen killing of Ruby
Into the Badlands (2015)
Bad writing does not stop a successful flying kick
I have seen the whole three seasons and must confess this a show with many problems. The concept is quite interesting, with compelling character arcs, but the writing and particularly the dialogs are rarely good, most of the time awful. The acting is often fine, with some very bad performances, as Aramis Knight, but also solid ones, as Daniel Wu and Emily Beecham. If I had to rate only on this, I would give Into the Badlands a 5. However, the martial arts antics are so good, I feel it deserves a 7, because this is the reason people watches this show.
Adventure Time: The Red Throne (2014)
They Live!
This episode reunites Keith David and Roddy Piper and recreates one of the best showdowns in cinema! Besides that, it also presents great character development for CB!
Norsemen (2016)
Good but deeply problematic
Witty dry humor and great jokes with anachronistic situations, it also has compelling characters. However, it is deeply homophobic and straightaway misogynistic: on a level I was not expecting from a 21th c. tv series and getting worse as the seasons pass (I wrote this after seeing season 3, so I took my time)
Adventure Time: Box Prince (2013)
Best episode for cat people
Finn quest to help the Box prince is highly recommended for people who loves cats. Fantastic!
The Dark Tower (2017)
generic action movie
Unbelievably bad. In times like these Hollywood lives from nostalgia, mostly from movies made in the eighties. The problem is The Dark Tower, besides being an action/fantasy/sci-fi movie with a generic plot, bad character development and a wasted cast, seems to be blend of Never Ending Story II and Masters of the Universe.
Zashchitniki (2017)
The Russian equivalent of a Michael Bay movie
The Russian equivalent of a Michael Bay movie, with way less money, of course. It is not a good super heroes movie, but it is quite entertaining and not as bad as the ratings here indicate. And it is far much better than any of the Fantastic Four movies or Suicide Squad. The CGI could be better, but one have to keep in mind this is a Russian movie, made with only a tiny fraction of the budget Hollywood movies have available.
